Character Sketch: Call for submissions

In the midst of all this Real ID brouhaha, it's good to be reminded that we sometimes play the World of Warcraft to immerse ourselves in our other identities -- the characters we play. Some of us enter the world of Azeroth to have a grand adventure, leaving our probably awesome but otherwise non-magical real lives for a while to masquerade as dwarves or orcs ... as anything from plate-wearing champions of the Light to felfire-wielding sorcerers in brimstone-stained robes. World of Warcraft is still an MMORPG, after all, and at the heart of it the characters we play are reflections of ourselves, real names or otherwise.

Here at WoW.com, we'd like to celebrate these characters -- your characters -- by taking them for a spin. We're looking for submissions of our readers' characters which we'll take and draw. Think of it as a reverse version of World of WarCrafts, where we'll draw your character and throw in a paragraph or two about them, Know Your Lore-style. We'll need your help, of course. We want you to tell us about your favorite character, whether it be your awesome end-game raiding night elf priest or your humble, low-level bank alt in a snazzy tuxedo set. It's up to you.

We want you to let us know about your character by shooting us an email at zach@wow.com with your character's name and a few lines describing them. Obviously, we'll need to get them right, so you could either link us to your character's armory or just send us some screenshots we can use as reference. The more detailed your descriptions or pictures, the more justice we'll be able to give to your character, so make sure to give us everything we need. We'll even try our best to get little details in there somewhere, like your favorite non-combat pet if you want it hanging around. In the end, if we get it right, we'll have a WoW.com wallpaper featuring one of your characters every week.

In a way, it's a shot at 15 Minutes of Fame without actually having to be anyone famous in real life or having done anything particularly stupendous. You just need to be you -- and your character needs to be, well, just about any character in the World of Warcraft. Over time, we hope to compile a fairly decent gallery of the heroes that you play. Maybe it'll even help our readers get to know each other somewhat. Without, you know, having to tell anyone your real name or anything.

For Gnomeregan! Your thoughts on the Midsummer Fire Festival

For Gnomeregan! is where the members of <B.L.O.G.> on Shadow Council (US-RP-A) roleplay guild meetings as part of an in-blog and in-game RP campaign. The rules for this campaign are: no ERP (Erotic RolePlay) and no vampires (though death knights are welcome). Everyone is invited to participate. Assume that to get into the guild, you at least pretended to be in full use of your faculties and are willing to fight for the cause. You are all welcome to join us here in the comments and those who wish to play with us in game should friend Peenk and ask for an invite on Shadow Council (US-RP-A).

I am Peenk the Scorchling! Flame on! It's like magic! I love this holiday! Woohoo! I will admit, however, that I am squeamish about all of that fiery torch tossing and what have you. But those bonfires make me feel like I am magic or a fire elemental or both!

My cousin Kixi was right about this holiday. I feel so wise and more experienced when I participate in some of these rituals. It's like things just come more easily to me. The enchantments are so strong! It seems an invaluable way to speed up our training.

Hey! It's Peenk! Remember me? I'm toning down my dialect again so that I am more easily understood. I have been informed that leaders should try to ... ah whatever. BORING. Anyway, I'd like to know a bit about your families. Who are your parents? Are they alive? Do they support the cause? Do they support you? Where are they? Are these enough questions? Do you want more? How about beer? Yeah, I know you want that.

For Gnomeregan! Distractions

For Gnomeregan! is where the members of <B.L.O.G.> on Shadow Council (US-RP-A) roleplay guild meetings as part of an in-blog and in-game RP campaign. Kixi Sparklebolt here again. Let's talk this week about distractions. We are supposed to be focused on training for the upcoming offensive to free Gnomeregan, but it is easy to get distracted.

For example, here I am at the Darkmoon Faire in Elwynn Forest. I came here because some guy in Ironforge handed me a piece of paper so that I could get some smaller pieces of paper. And though I have no use for pieces of paper, or a home to display them in, I accepted the one paper and went off to exchange it for the other ones. Does this help me fight troggs, Thermaplugg or even the Horde? No. Does this help me earn better equipment to train with? No. But I did get to dance with a night elf and his leashed dog. That was something.

Hey. Kixi Sparklebolt here again. Some of you have told me that you have training buddies or are teaming up for stuff. This. This is exactly the kind of initiative I want to see from all of you.

I also have a training buddy. Darkpeep is quiet and weird and I'm not sure all of her brain was reanimated with the rest of her, but together we are practicing our battle skills on the Horde. Darkpeep is her nickname, obviously, but she won't even tell me her full name. Does she remember it? I don't know!

Kixi Sparklebolt presides over today's meeting.

Hey. My cousin, Peenk, has been trying to get barracks for us all, but so far has failed. She has found out there are some practice skirmishes going on for Operation: Gnomeregan, but our guild has not been invited. Disappointing.

Anyway, I know that many of you just sleep at inns where you are working or training, but I also know that some of you have more consistent places to rest. Some of you even have homes. So while we wait for Peenk to sort through the red tape, I thought we could go around the room and state where you lay your heads at night, if you have room for your fellow trainees and whether you have suggestions for others.

For Gnomeregan! It's time for battle!

Hey! My name is Kixi and I'm subbing for Peenk this meeting. I'm her cousin and ... well ... yeah, I'm dead. I guess "undead" is the appropriate term. Whatever. I "died" during that whole Gnomeregan fiasco and then had to do chores for the Lich King for a bit, but now I'm back to help avenge my unlife! Or something. I don't quite get this life/death thing anymore. It used to be so clear! But I'm rambling.

And that's something that's been going on too long here. Rambling. Many of you are out there ... training ... not hanging around in bed in Teldrassil inns. Ahem. But we've still been lax. So Peenk has made me her Person In Charge Of Training, or PICOT. I guess that's some sort of stitch or other. So I'm a stitch in time!

Polite laughter is appropriate here.

All the World's a Stage: Odd man out

Robin Torres is subbing for a very busy Michael Gray. Please ignore the muffled sounds coming from the other room, as it is just my pet ... hedgehog ... yeah. And pay no mind to that mostly used roll of duct tape. I was just making some plumbing repairs.

When trying to become a better RPer for the For Gnomeregan! project, I went through and studied many recent All the World's a Stage columns. But I have to admit, I didn't even glance at the "You can't be a vampire" article because, well, I figured it was just vampire RP bashing. (The Twilight photo was a bit of a deterrent as well.) I read it last night, however, and discovered it was actually about how to discourage someone who is derailing your group's roleplay by playing a far-out character. This week, we're going to look at the other side of the coin, and offer suggestions for the person who wants to play that challenging character who doesn't quite fit in.

Excuse me. Peenk runs off and returns a few moments later.

I have suffered a setback. I beleeve I have food poisoneeng. It could be a disease that doesn't affect the night elves or I could actuallee have been poisoned by one of the manee who do not want me heere. But I'm prettee sure it's my improper preparation of Kaldorei Spider Kabobs.

I'll be right back.

For Gnomeregan!

I've lived a sheltered life since my familee escaped our home citee, so I took my normal-sized feet to see the wide world. I traveled to all of our major allied citees in Azeroth, funding my trip by runneeng errands for people along the way. I was particularlee moved by my trip to the night elf lands. While prospective employers have treeted me with respect and have withheld judgment of my appeerance until after I have proven myself, the local adventurers have largelee been prejudiced and insulteeng. Emphasis on the word "large." They are gigantic there.

For Gnomeregan! Welcome to the first meeting of B.L.O.G.

Peenkerella "Peenk" Sparklebolt presides over our first meeting via the magic of guild chat.

Hear ye! Hear ye! Or whatever. I don't know how to start these things. Ahem. Anyway. Welcome to B.L.O.G.! I'm glad you all could join us. As you know, we have created this guild specifically to train for Operation: Gnomeregan. The High Tinker himself authorized his representative to authorize us to form this training army. All races are invited to join, as long as they are willing to work for the cause of the gnome exiles.

/sigh

I'm not going to pretend. We all came here hoping to help and were told we weren't ready to join the official army. So we are training together in the hopes of being used in the coming offensive. Our personal goals right now should be to train our skills and work for people willing to help equip our army. Later, we will have organized drills to learn to fight together as a team.

Our agenda for this, our first meeting, is to go around and introduce ourselves. I'll begin:

WoW.com Guest Post: Creating lore-based characters that aren't Mary Sues

Anna writes about roleplaying, healing, raiding and creative writing over at her blog, Too Many Annas.

One of the most frequent criticisms leveled at any kind of roleplay or fan-written fiction is the presence of the dreaded Mary Sue.

If you're not familiar with the term, a Mary Sue is a character who is overly idealized, has few or no actual flaws and functions as a wish-fulfillment or fantasy for the author. In WoW, this type of character is also frequently tied to major lore figures – the stereotypical lovechild of Thrall and Jaina (or some other such invented tie to a major character).

Unfortunately, sometimes this turns into an avoidance of all lore information in an attempt to not make the character Sue-ish. In a world like Azeroth that has a lot of really well developed lore, that can result in characters who are dangerously ambiguous and don't have any connection or history.

So how do you write a lore-based character without toeing the Mary Sue line?
