If you're on the hunt for the perfect weapon to compliment your transmog, The Lazy Peon has you covered with this video. In it, he shows off 100 different weapons from all angles to help you pin down the perfect look. (It's certainly easier than browsing through lists of swords on Wowhead.) Every weapon shown is currently obtainable, and you'll find out where to get it, what it costs, and its drop rate, too.

This video does require a bit of an attention span, though -- as you might guess, showing that many weapons with that much info takes up a hefty amount of time, and the video clocks in at nearly 19 minutes. Still, if you want to get a good look at all of the best weapon options, this is probably easier (and perhaps even faster) than searching for images of each weapon -- though for those of you who prefer your information text based, there's a list below the video. Happy transmogging!

What you see above is the result of time marching on - in my draenei's right hand is Sulfuras, the Extinguished Hand, a drop from Firelands. In the left hand, Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, the legendary drop from the original Molten Core. (Yes, I know technically it doesn't drop, the Eye drops, you craft a Sulfuron Hammer and then use the Eye on it, I've had the thing since MC I know how I got it.) What I'm showing you is essentially the orderly progression of time via graphic upgrades - you can essentially see the history of the game unfolding via the difference between these two weapons.

Everything from the spikes to the grip to the shape of the head, it's all more detailed and crisp on the newer model. The older model is a collection of polygonal shapes that bear only a vague resemblance to a hammer compared to the newer model, which is itself still not as good as models we have in the game now, never mind some of the Warlords drops we're about to see. The gap between these two hammers is the gap between 2004 and 2011, and here we are, three years later than that - and they show us how much a ten year old game can in fact change.

Continue reading Why updated graphics matter

Why updated graphics matter originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 04 Nov 2014 17:00:00 EST. Since patch 6.0.2 came out, I've rediscovered the love I once held for soloing older raids. More than rediscovered it - I've expanded it, because now I can pretty easily solo most Cataclysm raids (I'm working on Spine of Deathwing) and that broadens what I can gather for transmog. But it's more than transmog, and more than the sensation one gets when you push Rhyolith through all his phases so that he dies before he's even done yelling at you in an awesome parody of what it sounds like when I wake up.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer magazine, Ion Hazzikostas pointed out that one of World of Warcraft's biggest strengths is its depth of content. The MMO has been going for ten years. There are old raids and dungeons everywhere. It's not just old content - it's a resource. And it makes WoW a game with incredible potential.
Continue reading The Importance of Legacy Content

The Importance of Legacy Content originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sun, 26 Oct 2014 16:00:00 EST. The character creation screen class armor sets were originally added in Mists of Pandaria to preview what a class may look like once it was leveled up. The problem is that they were never actually made available in the game. This is finally changing in Warlords of Draenor. If you build a Salvage Yard in your garrison and upgrade it to level 3, the salvage crates you receive from missions have a chance to contain this armor. The crates can also contain some new weapon transmogs.
Simply load up WoW and create a new character to preview what the armor looks like, or check out the sets in the Wowhead model viewer. The monk and hunter shoulders are invisible, but it looks like those specific pieces will not be eligible for transmog. You can only loot armor for your own class.

The Salvage Yard takes up one of 3 small building plots in your garrison. Salvage crates can also contain upgraded gear for your followers, herbs, ore, and other items.

Our friends over at Wowhead have uncovered a new feature in Warlords of Draenor that should make dedicated transmog enthusiasts very happy--transmoggable farm weapons. These include a Garden Hoe, Garden Shovel, Garden Pitchfork, Garden Scythe, and Garden Sickle. The Garden Hoe and Garden Sickle are classified as one-hand maces, all the rest are two-hand staves. They are vendor items sold by the NPCs around your Garrison's Herb Garden, and the cost is surprisingly steep--2,375 gold plus 500 Draenic Seeds for the one-handers, and 4,750 gold plus 1,000 Draenic Seeds for the two-handers. Draenic Seeds can be either grown in your Garrison's Herb Garden, or farmed out in the world by Herbalists.

If you've ever dreamed of an amazing farmer transmog, these weapons are sure to complete the look along with the Red Lumberjack Shirt and the Blue Overalls--for clothies, at least. Who'd have thought that a warlock could look so convincingly nurturing?
If you're one of those players who enjoys transmog but hates it when an enchant doesn't seem to go with your weapon, the folks at Wowhead have datamined an interesting new wrinkle - the ability to transmog your weapon effects. It seems to be achieved via an item called an illusion, like this one for the old BC era Executioner enchant, that applies only the visual aspect of a specific enchant. In addition, rogues get a special rogue only effect, Illusion - Poison, which does exactly what you'd expect, as well as certain Warlords enchants having a poisonous variant just for rogues with a similar effect.

There's also another kind of enchant variant, the hidden variant, that has the same basic effect as the baseline enchant but which has no discernible visible effect.

This is all pretty interesting stuff if you're an enchanter, or into transmog, or just don't like a specific enchant effect and want everything to look like it's got fire or butterflies on it.
On live servers you can't transmog polearms over swords, axes or maces (and vice versa), but on the Alpha it's a totally different story, as you can see in the header image above. In the new theorycrafting sticky on the Warlords of Draenor Alpha forums, there's a big post by Celestalon that explains how we're going to be able to solo old raids and such with the item squish making us proportionately less powerful in those raids. It's worth breaking down here, for those of us (like me) who enjoy that sort of thing for either fun or transmog.

First up, all players will gain a damage reduction factors when attacked by creatures that are lower level, starting at Cataclysm content and heading down from there. Creatures from Mists of Pandaria and, presumably Warlords of Draenor will not be affected by this. So once a creature from Cataclysm content or below (Wrath, BC and Vanilla) attacks a character that outlevels them, there will be a formula that determines how little damage the character takes. Celestalon presented it as such.

LevelDiff = PlayerLevel - CreatureLevel
if (CreatureExpansion < Pandaria) then
// 10% DR per level diff, with a floor of 10%
DamageTakenFactor = max(1.0 - 0.1 * LevelDiff, 0.1)
else
DamageTakenFactor = 1.0
end

What this means is that, when your level 100 character goes inside a level 80 Wrath raid, they'll have a very large reduction in how much damage they take.
Continue reading Warlords of Draenor: High level characters vs. lower level content

Warlords of Draenor: High level characters vs. lower level content originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 13 Jun 2014 13:00:00 EST.
If, like me, you bought the Grand Expedition Yak (at an obscene price) because you just had to have a reforger on your mount -- maybe you have as big a problem as I do with the concept of monetary value, I don't know -- you were probably slightly saddened to discover that reforging was leaving the game. For it meant that you would no longer have a reforger right there on your mount for that one time you used it for yourself before ending up the entire raid's reforge buddy when they all got new gear.

But now with reforging gone, we've all been asking what Mystic Birdhat's ultimate fate would be. Would he simply be removed? Would he be replaced with someone else? No and no. Instead, he's now apparently a transmogrification vendor, and there was much rejoicing. Now, be warned, this is the Alpha. Things are subject to change. I couldn't actually get Mystic Birdhat to transmog any of my gear - he just sat there, smug about his new job description.

The folks at Wowhead have an extensive preview of weapon models, with multiple videos, showing off what they've datamined from Challenge Modes, Raids, and dungeons as well as PvP honor weapons. Some of the drops look like updated BC models, like this sword that has an unmistakably draenei feel to it, or this shield from challenge modes. It seems based on what's been mined so far that this time the weapons are the prestige draw from challenge modes instead of armor like in Pandaria.

There's a lot to look at, so head over to the official preview on Wowhead and take a look.

The World of Warcraft will be getting cosmetic accessories to spice up their characters. These items will allow people to customize the looks of their characters to greater reflect the classes and play-styles that they choose.

In the example that Blizzard gives, rogues could equip cosmetic daggers or vials of poisons -- they'd have no in-game effect other than to change the look of the character. And as we see from the picture above, librams and quivers (they're back from the dead) are also another example of cosmetic options. As with all new features, there's a lot of fine tuning, so don't read too much into everything yet.

This new feature was announced in an Artcraft blog post that briefly appeared on Blizzard's French site, but has since vanished. We suspect that we'll see another version of it appear soon.

I don't usually take a lot of time with my alts. Sure, I'll level them, I'll get them moderately geared, but I don't dedicate huge amounts of time to them. However, I will always without fail make sure that they look nice -- a task made much easier with transmog. But even then, I'm still picky about what my characters will wear. If I'm going to make them look snazzy, I'm going to take the time to make sure they look really, really snazzy.

Which means that I'm not just paying attention to the outfits that they're wearing, I'm also paying attention to what mounts that set goes with -- both ground and flying. This may seem like overkill to most sane people, but I figure if you're going to go to the trouble of putting together a look, you may as well make it cohesive enough that people can tell some thought went into putting it all together, right? I am, however, fully aware that not everyone indulges in my particular brand of armor collection and carefully crafted looks.

But I'm curious, because the feature has been out for quite some time now, and I can't really imagine the game without it at this point. How far do you go for transmog? Do you craft cool sets for your alts, as well as your main character? Is your bank alt dressed up, too? Do you match with mounts and other accessories, or is simply having an outfit that doesn't look like a clown suit enough for you? Have you farmed endless instances looking for that one particular piece of armor that brings the whole set together? Or is transmog just something that isn't for you?

Today we posted a rundown on PAX East information. and one of the pieces of information was that Diablo III's transmog system is not coming to World of Warcraft. This made me sad, of course. Today, Ion "Watcher" Hazzikostas tweeted the following update on that.

@perculia Not in 6.0. We do have major plans to make transmog more elegant as a collection game in the future, though.

- Watcher (@WatcherDev) April 14, 2014

Now, this doesn't tell us how they plan to make transmog more elegant. It doesn't even tell us for sure that there won't be a Diablo III style approach to it - it just tells us that it won't be in Patch 6.0, whatever it ends up being. Still, it's nice to know that it's still being worked on. The extra void storage tab is a nice feature. Until we know what it is going to be I'll just be over here staring wistfully at my complete lack of bag space.

PAX East 2014 has come and gone, but we at WoW Insider have come away from the weekend with juicy new information to share with you about Warlords of Draenor. During the expo, I sat down for a chat with senior game designers Steve Burke and Brian Holinka, lead class designer Kris Zierhut, and other developers.

In our brief time together, they told me some exciting info about garrisons, raiding, transmog, and the expansion's starting experience. They also provided insight into what a boosted level 90 will experience after the expansion launches.

Please note that mild spoilers about the early story of Warlords of Draenor will follow. Join me after the break for all the new info!
Continue reading Warlords of Draenor: New info from PAX East

Warlords of Draenor: New info from PAX East originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 14 Apr 2014 13:00:00 EST.
Transmog addicts may have some good news for patch 6.0. When LFR was introduced with Dragon Soul, the last raid in Cataclysm, players flocked to the content and gathered armor and items that had their own unique color schemes. After Mists of Pandaria was introduced, players leveled to 90 -- and the ability to run Dragon Soul on LFR difficulty disappeared. While players can still farm the raid on Normal and Heroic difficulties, the unique color sets released specifically for LFR were no longer available to those max level characters.

This was in part due to the nature of LFR. The only way to raid LFR level content is to queue for it through the raid finder interface -- you can't simply change the dropdown difficulty on a per-character basis, as you can with Normal and Heroic difficulties. Once you've passed the level threshold for Cataclysm content, the option to raid Dragon Soul LFR simply disappears from the raid finder interface. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem -- but transmogrification addicts everywhere have been looking for a solution to obtaining those older, uniquely colored items, and Lead Game Designer Ion "Watcher" Hazzikostas just tweeted that a solution may be on the way in patch 6.0.
Before the introduction of transmogrification, I had no idea why anyone wanted it.

Back then, I was a pretty involved raider (still am, but probably a step or so less) and almost all of my effort in-game was dedicated towards improving my gear's stats. I didn't give much thought to how it looked. Occasionally I'd make fun of myself for looks like the one above, when I simply couldn't get a hat or shoulders to drop in the first tier of Cataclysm raiding and had to settle for ones from Zul'Gurub or Zul'Aman. I wore them, because they were the best I could get, and every week I cursed the bosses in Blackwing Descent and Bastion of Twilight for not dropping better. But I always thought it was the stats that were important, not the fact that I looked like some demented tauren clown pretending to be a murloc to scare tauren children.

It took me a long time to understand how important a feature that allows you to customize your character's look can be to get you invested in that character. My groaning bank and void storage, filled to bursting with transmog items, can certainly attest that I quickly learned that lesson. But it shouldn't have been so surprising to me, considering I played in vanilla -- and back in vanilla, it was the fact that the tier raiding sets were such stark visual improvements that was half the motivation in pursuing them.
Continue reading The surprising importance of visual improvement

The surprising importance of visual improvement originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 18 Mar 2014 17:00:00 EST.
Look, I'm a transmog aficionado. I have no bag space left because I collect gear constantly. So every time I go to Tempest Keep to kill Kael, I run into these guys and they irritate the heck out of me. I already have the Battlegear of Wrath, and its recolor. I prefer the classic look to the Burning Crusade green color dungeon set, but I'd very much prefer that red set above to either, and I can't get it. It doesn't drop anywhere - the only place you'll see it in game is on mobs like the guys in Tempest Keep and Ruul the Darkener, who makes it even worse by dual-wielding Thunderfury while he's at it.

This irks me. I want this set, but I can't have it. It's not a major concern - it's just irritating.

So let's make this about you - any mobs who have something you want - an item, gear, a special mount?

I'd actually forgotten what my character's gear looked like. I've been so heavily into transmog since the end of Cataclysm, I've long since stopped paying attention to the gear I have, and instead keep compulsively looking for the gear I want to look like - running older content, scrounging old quests, occasionally hitting LFR for a new skin or color of a piece I already have.

One of the consequences of transmogrification is that I can blissfully go throughout my game play never really actually knowing what the gear I have on looks like. For instance, I'm really not a fan of this sword model - I love the stats, but the look of it isn't one I like. It's not as outright ludicrously evil as Xal'atoh, and not as elegant as Gar'tok, one of my favorite models from the current raid. But since I have one of those, I haven't had to look at this model since I got it.

In a way I'm kind of glad I switched everything back to its actual model. It's good to take a look at what you're actually wearing from time to time - and now I know I'm probably dumping every single piece of Warrior tier 16 as soon as I start leveling through Draenor, and I'm probably going to disenchant that sword. Or at least one of them. I admit, I'm such a completionist, DEing both would be hard. My weapon collection would be upset.

We're all looking for something to keep us busy while we wait for Warlords of Draenor. Why not spend sometime making ourselves look good? Many of us at WoW Insider have been obsessed with the transmogrification feature ever since it has been implemented, so let's take a moment to look back on some of the fashion options available.
Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Care and Feeding of Warriors, the column dedicated to arms, fury and protection warriors. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

I got to do some tanking in Heroic Siege this week - nothing major, just offtanking on Dark Shaman - and it was pretty fun all around. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy tanking in raids. It was fun to get to see the Warrior 2 piece Tier 16 tanking bonus in action in a current raid at the cutting edge of content, instead of in an LFR or using it to solo Cataclysm raids. It's a very solid set bonus, and I'm going to write more about it in the future - basically, I think it should be baked into the baseline Shield Block and Shield Barrier abilities, or perhaps be baked into Shield Slam in some way (so that, for ten seconds after a successful Shield Slam, you heal a percentage of your Shield Barrier absorb or Shield Block damage prevented, as one possible example) - but I'm not quite ready to write about that yet.

Now, as I said, I've been using my tank set and prot spec to solo Cataclysm raids, up to and including the first three bosses in 10 man Dragon Soul. It's not always easy, but it is possible, and the reason I've been doing this is because I freaking love transmogrification, and therefore, I've been pursuing it with a fevered dedication that has completely robbed me of bank, void storage and even bag space. I've wanted to write about transmog and warriors forever, but I felt such deep shame at letting Cable, the mutant son of Cyclops and Madeline Pryor, write about it first. I mean, I'm so in love with transmog that I started a tumblr about it.

So let's talk about transmog and warriors. (If you're not interested in transmog, you should probably come back next week.) Why do I argue that warriors do transmog better than anyone? Well, here's a few reasons.
Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: We do transmog better than anyone

The Care and Feeding of Warriors: We do transmog better than anyone originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Feb 2014 14:00:00 EST.
