BlizzCon Warcraft Movie panel liveblog

The Warcraft Movie panel will begin at 2:15pm Pacific, and we'll be liveblogging it right here. We've heard that we may see some footage during the panel, and we're pretty excited to see what they've got. Duncan Jones and Chris Metzen will be talking about the film for an hour, and should have some amazing surprises in store.

SDCC: Warcraft movie details from Legendary Pictures panel

With San Diego Comic Con in full swing, people are starting to get to see previews and hear details about upcoming projects, and one of those projects is director Duncan Jones' Warcraft movie. During the Legendary Pictures panel, details were released about the movie (coming March 2016) and here's what our sources have to say about it.

We're looking at an origin story, one that details how the First War got started. Durotan is the orc focus character, while Anduin Lothar plays this role for the humans of Azeroth.
Duncan Jones, the director of the film, says he wants the movie to be accessible for everyone and that it's been fantastic working with Blizzard.
The teaser trailer "Looks just like the game. Amazing. Stormwind and throne room looks exact (like that tiny glimpse we saw in an earlier photo.) Armor, gryphons, orcs in full cgi that look just like game trailers."
The teaser trailer varies between the human and orc perspectives.
We're told that there is a blend between CGI and live effects in the trailer and that it looks natural and clean.

For now the teaser seems to only be available to view at SDCC, but if it goes up online we'll be sure to give it to you as soon as we can.

San Diego Comic-Con 2014 programming schedule released

San Diego Comic-Con International has begun to release its program of events for this year's convention. Blizzard Entertainment will once again have a presence at the convention as well as a panel with Chris Metzen himself. The panel, titled Blizzard Entertainment Showcase, takes place Thursday, July 24 from 2:15-3:15pm in Room 6BCF. Attendees looking for expansion information should take note that this is a panel about Blizzard merchandise and licensed products. While it may include some new information on upcoming projects, there likely won't be a lot of talking about game development -- but the panel does include a Q&A.

However, attendees looking for other Blizzard information would do well to hit up Hall H on Saturday, July 26. Legendary Pictures will be presenting a panel featuring their upcoming slate of films in Hall H from 12:25-1:10pm. Last year, Director Duncan Jones made a brief appearance at the convention to show off what he called a "mood piece" for the upcoming Warcraft film. Filming for Warcraft officially wrapped in May of this year, which means that attendees at the panel may very well see more than just a brief glimpse of Warcraft.

Fans looking for Blizzard on the main convention floor can head to booth 115 for Blizzard Entertainment. At the moment, there still isn't an official schedule for any signings that might take place at Comic-Con. Given last year's list of notable names, we should see an official announcement regarding potential signings and other pertinent Comic-Con info soon.

Ben Foster playing Medivh in Warcraft movie

IGN spoke with actor Ben Foster about his role in the upcoming Warcraft film, and Foster revealed that he's playing none other than Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal, opener of the Dark Portal, and later savior of the world. From the interview, it seems as though the story for the film -- which has never really been properly revealed -- may be a little more clear. According to Foster, "He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle."

If Medivh's friends are asking for help regarding a certain portal to another world, we could be looking at a modified retelling of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, one created with a proper cinematic twist. It would certainly be a nice counterpoint to Warlords of Draenor, which is sending players to explore an alternate version of Draenor. Needless to say, Medivh's confirmed appearance, and confirmed actor in the film are a nice surprise -- head to IGN for more from Foster and his role in the Warcraft movie, hitting theaters in 2016.

Warcraft movie is a wrap

A little over four months after it began, and filming for the Warcraft movie has officially wrapped, according to a tweet made by Director Duncan Jones yesterday. Of course this is really just the beginning, as the film is slated for an incredibly long bout -- 20 months or so -- of post production, in which visual effects will be added and the film fine-tuned. The release date is still set for March 11, 2016, so they have plenty of time to get it polished.

With filming coming to a close, one has to wonder if we'll be seeing trailers or footage any time soon. Comic-Con International will be hitting San Diego in late July, and given that last year's convention saw some teaser footage before filming even began, it seems like more footage this year is a distinct possibility. And we'd be silly to think that this year's BlizzCon won't contain at least one panel regarding the film. I have to say, given exactly how long people have been talking about the possibility of a Warcraft film, it seems a little surreal that one actually exists now. Are you looking forward to seeing the finished product?

Warcraft movie filming about to wrap

On Twitter, Warcraft movie director Duncan Jones reports that filming -- which started in January -- is about to come to an end.

For those counting down with me, we're done shooting Warcraft in 3 weeks as of tomorrow! Holy shnikey...

Of course, filming finishing doesn't mean that we're going to be seeing the magic of Warcraft in theaters any time soon -- the release date stands at March 11, 2016. However, with filming completing in three weeks, maybe we'll finally start to see some more images or info -- come on, Blizzard, would a preview trailer be too much to ask?

Get a first look at the Warcraft movie in Empire Magazine

It's not so much of a first look as it is a first glimpse, but the latest issue of Empire brings us the first photo from the Warcraft film set. Focusing on director Duncan Jones watching the filming, the photo doesn't give us much info on what we can expect, but the monitors do give us a tantalizing first look of the Stormwind throne room -- and if this is anything like what the finished product will look like, it's very reminiscent of World of Warcraft.

Filming started this January, but we've yet to find out much about the work in progress, which isn't due in theaters until March 11, 2016. But as filming continues, we're sure to find out more -- if nothing else, expect the movie to make a big splash at this year's BlizzCon -- - but in the meantime, we'll have to make do with this tiny, grainy image.

Legendary East strikes deal over Warcraft film distribution

You're probably familiar with the Burbank-based company Legendary Entertainment, at least because they're the powerhouse behind the "Warcraft" film. Their affiliate, Legendary East, has recently announced that the largest film distributor in China, China Film Co., has made an eight-figure investment in two of Legendary's upcoming films--"Seventh Son" and, you guessed it, "Warcraft." If either film gets released in China, China Film Co. will be the one to distribute it.

This is an interesting development because until 2012 China capped the number of foreign films allowed into the country every year at 20. The current limit is 34. It does make sense that Chinese film distributors would be very interested in having the Warcraft movie be one of those 34 allowed films, because World of Warcraft is hugely popular in China. Legendary Entertainment currently lists the Warcraft movie as being scheduled for release on March 11th, 2016.

Dominic Cooper talks about the Warcraft Movie

Actor Dominic Cooper, one of the confirmed cast for the Warcraft Movie, has sat down with an interviewer and discussed the upcoming role. He talks about the difficulty of working within a world that is already so rich in story, so well-known, and already inhabited by so many people. He says, not unfairly, that many people have probably made up their minds about certain characters already, and that that's an obstacle the producers have to overcome.

He also talks about his gaming history, referring to both WoW and Need for Speed, and tells the interviewer how he's played both games and loved them. He goes on to talk about how he couldn't find the time to be sufficiently reliable to commit time to raiding in WoW, and how he unfortunately no longer plays either. Nonetheless, it's an interesting interview, and perhaps a glimpse into the Warcraft Movie world.

Warcraft movie starts filming today?

After years of rumors, delays, and speculation it appears the Warcraft movie has finally begun filming. Director Duncan Jones tweeted late last night that today was going to be the first shoot day, but wasn't exactly specific if this was related to Warcraft or not. The originally reported shoot schedule of January, plus tweets such as this leads us to believe that it is indeed Warcraft. Joining him on the Vancouver, Canada set will be Warcraft's list of stars: Travis Fimmell, Dominic Cooper, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Robert Kazinsky, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebbell, and Daniel Wu.

Going to start shooting the movie tomorrow. Crikey! Better find my specs!

Warcraft will be an orcs vs. humans origin story, featuring the characters of Anduin Lothar and Durotan. Dominic Cooper added to Warcraft movie cast, speaks briefly about story

Dominic Cooper has become the latest actor to sign on for the Warcraft movie. This was rumored previously but he has now confirmed his involvement. He will co-star alongside the already announced Travis Fimmell, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Robert Kazinsky, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebbell, and Daniel Wu. Speaking to Crave Online, Cooper had the following to say about the story:

"There's a very human story at the heart of it because there's a few of us that are humans in it that are up against tribes and problematic issues that exist in the world that we exist in," Cooper said. "It's happening all over the world at the moment and you see it happening all over. People have savaged their own lands and their own environment and they're having to find a new environment in which to move into through the hostility of others."

We heard at BlizzCon from Director Duncan Jones that Warcraft will be an orcs vs. humans origin story told equally from both sides. Anduin Lothar will be the hero for the humans, while Durotan, father of Thrall, will be the hero for the orcs. Warcraft begins shooting this year in Vancouver, Canada and will hit theaters on March 11, 2016.

We've heard a lot about the Warcraft movie at this point. We know the story will be centered around the conflict between orcs and humans -- "orcs vs. humans" as director Duncan Jones explained at BlizzCon -- featuring Lothar and Durotan. We know the movie will be coming out in 2016. And we know that Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinsky, Daniel Wu, and Clancy Brown will be starring.

What we don't know is who will be playing what -- so it's time to speculate, morning readers. Who would you like to see playing what in this movie?

Warcraft Movie announces two new actors

Legendary Pictures has announced two more actors who will participate in the Warcraft movie, due to be released in March of 2016.

While you might not necessarily be extremely familiar with these guys and their work, their histories are pretty impressive. Clancy Brown is an actor who principally focuses on voiceover, well-known for his parts in Shawshank Redemption, Highlander where he was Kurgan, Starship Troopers, and of course as Mr. Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants! His most recent film, Homefront, is in cinemas now.

Daniel Wu is very well-known indeed in Chinese-language film, principally as an actor, but also a director and producer. He's been in over 40 films and won various awards, including a Hong Kong Film award for directing work in The Heavenly Kings. He most recently appeared in The Europa Report this year.

Robert Kazinsky, Warcraft movie actor, reveals he is a huge WoW fan

Yesterday, Legendary Pictures revealed some of the principal cast members for the upcoming Warcraft movie, which is slated to begin filming in January and will be released on March 11, 2016. One of the actors revealed was Robert Kazinsky, who you may remember from Pacific Rim (as seen above) or season 6 of True Blood. Kazinsky tweeted he is a longtime WoW player, with 463 days /played and several max level characters.

I had every class at 80 and 85, currently have five 90's, main is a DK and has been since 3.1, one of the good ones though.

Dominic Cooper rumored to be joining Warcraft film cast

If you thought yesterday's cast announcement would slow down the Warcraft film rumors, you would be wrong because the rumors keep flying. Today we're hearing that Dominic Cooper -- whom you might know from Captain America or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter -- may be joining the cast as well. And though this isn't confirmed, quite a few of the past movie casting rumors have proven true -- and, who knows, we may still see Colin Farrell joining the cast.

Still, none of the rumors have given a hint as to who's playing what, so there's still a lot we don't know about the upcoming Warcraft movie. Come on, Blizzard, can we at least get a hint?

Warcraft movie cast announced by Legendary Pictures

Though it seemed likely we'd hear something about casting for the Warcraft movie at BlizzCon, the movie panel remained close-lipped on the subject of stars. Tonight, however, Legendary Pictures made the first cast announcement via Twitter.

Warcraft Movie release delayed to 2016 [Updated]

Another delay has sprung up in the Warcraft Movie. The release date has been pushed back, as Warcraft tweeted today:

Release date for WARCRAFT from @Legendary Pictures released by @UniversalPics is moving from December 18, 2015, to March 11, 2016.

We thought it was looking good for 2015, but given that filming is slated to begin in January 2014 it may have been ambitious. Blizzard's policy always seems to be that it's better to do something right than to do it fast, but in the context of the Warcraft movie it's really rather drawn out.

It's highly possible that all movies have complicated and troublesome stories behind them, but the Warcraft movie seems, from our perspective as game fans at least, to have had more than its fair share. That being said, the relatively constant flow of information on news sites, and the panel at BlizzCon all imply that it's still moving forwards.

Update: An official press release has been published by Legendary Pictures.

We still don't know very much about the upcoming Warcraft movie -- just that it's about Warcraft and will be released in 2015 -- though we're sure to learn more at BlizzCon. But in the meantime, rumors have started to surface about the film's cast, including the names Colin Ferrell, Paula Patton, and Travis Fimmel. We still don't know anything for sure -- all of these fall solidly into rumor territory -- but while we don't know anything for certain, we can have fun speculating.

Rumor: 'Vikings' star Travis Fimmel to play lead role in Warcraft movie

Variety is reporting that Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar Lothbrok in the History Channel series Vikings, is set to star in the upcoming Warcraft movie. A formal offer hasn't been presented yet, but their sources say he will be playing one of the four lead roles in the film. Last month, it was reported that Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) was in negotiations for one of the lead roles. Colin Farrell has reportedly been offered a lead but it's uncertain how likely he is to sign on.

The plot of the movie has been a carefully guarded secret and all we really know is there will be four lead characters. We should find out more at BlizzCon where there will be a panel dedicated to the Warcraft movie with Duncan Jones (Director), Chris Metzen, and Rob Pardo. Warcraft will hit theaters on December 18, 2015.
