Beginning March 1, WoW Insider will be working with a smaller budget than we've had in previous years. As you might have seen on our sister site Massively, we aren't the only ones affected. I don't think there's anyone in the world that likes to hear they'll have less money tomorrow than they had yesterday, let alone an organization like ours. That's the hand we've been dealt. We're going to play it, like we always have when given bad hands.

With the advent of this change in our budget, we've had to change publication of many of our regular columns and features. That has, unfortunately, resulted in the need to let some of our current staff go. I'll leave it up to those particular writers to decide whether or not they want that information known beyond natural discovery, but if they do, I encourage all of you to follow those people to Twitter and beyond to see where they go next. They're welcome to join you in the comments on this post if they'd like. Every single one of them are passionate, wonderful individuals, some of the best I've had the pleasure of working with, and they'll continue to do great things wherever they go.

If you keep an eye on the site in the coming weeks, you'll get a pretty good picture of our content going forward. This isn't the end of WoW Insider. Far from it. We'll still be here producing content every single day. We aren't shutting down, just tightening the belt. We've preserved as many of your favorites as we possibly could and we'll continue to work day in and out to bring you news and views from around the World of Warcraft. Despite the situation, WoW Insider is eager for the upcoming beta (and release) of Warlords of Draenor, as well as our occasional glances toward Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm.

November was packed. BlizzCon is always an event big enough to blow up the site, and recapping all of it for a year-in-review piece is just an exercise in futility. Let me just direct your attention to our BlizzCon 2013 tag and I'll pick out the most high-profile stuff behind the cut.

Another busy month! As you'd expect, more and more news related to BlizzCon picked up as October drew to a close, but this was also a heavy period for editorial work.

We also had some of the best machinima of the year in October, and I'd like to draw some particular attention to The Phantom of the Battlegrounds. What a brilliant piece.

Patch 5.4 went live on September 10th, and the month pretty much blew up from that point with an avalanche of editorials, art, predictions, and arguments. This and November were easily the busiest months of the year.

The Know Your Lore column in particular went into overdrive in September analyzing what we found in the Siege of Orgrimmar raid, but this month was an embarrassment of riches no matter where you looked.

Patch 5.4 was gearing up to go live in early September, so it's not too surprising that August was dominated by the wait for both that and BlizzCon's approach. However, this turned out to be a very news-heavy months for a variety of reasons that had nothing to do with the patch.

May was all about patch 5.3 news, heroic scenarios, Battlefield: Barrens, and (strangely enough) an awful lot of debate over whether WoW was too easy or not. Where did that come from?

News was pretty slow in the early part of the month as everyone settled to the task of working to unlock all of the Isle of Thunder's goodies and getting to Lei Shen. Things picked up as more information rolled off the patch 5.3 PTR.

There were three pretty obvious themes in April that got a lot of play: The game's gearing model and how it could be improved, the lack of tanks and healers in the Throne of Thunder LFR, and what on earth was going on with the Alliance and its major lore figures.

This is the fifth year that I've done the Best of WoW Insider series, and I have rarely encountered a month in which it was harder to cut so much out in pursuit of the "best." March 2013 was embarrassingly full of riches. I mean, any month in which a major patch drops is always interesting, but this one just had a tidal wave of great commentary, screenshots, art, and machinima. I apologize to everyone and everything that I had to leave out.

The end of the month did get a bit quieter. I can't tell whether that's because players settled down a little to work on the content, or if it's because Bioshock: Infinite dropped on the 26th and everyone played themselves into a state of collapse.

February 2013 was largely consumed with PTR work in anticipation of patch 5.2, and I'd be remiss not to mention the insane amount of work that Matticus did to get us up-to-date and accurate information on what to expect in the Throne of Thunder. Apart from that, February saw a run of great raid and guild recruitment videos in Moviewatch (not all of which I was able to include here, regrettably) and a noticeable streak of class-based introspection.

Welcome back to the Best of WoW Insider series! If you're new to WoW Insider, every December we run a retrospective series on the best articles from the previous year and/or those pieces that most ably captured the zeitgeist of the WoW community. There'll be one retrospective post each day through December 31st, so keep checking back as we count down.

We start today with January 2013, which saw patch 5.2 reach the PTR for the first time. Like other months in which the current raid content is stale and we're waiting on new PTR news, it was a very busy month for opinion pieces and the art scene. The latter in particular saw one of the year's most popular videos debut at the end of the month.

For some reason, GC also popped up in the news a lot this January.

Last week, we made an erroneous announcement about a GameStop Black Friday sale. The mistake was ours and we are sorry.

This apology is a week in the making because we took the time to examine the steps we took prior to that announcement and where we went wrong. Initially, we posted the sale as a rumor, with the intention of telling our readers to keep their eyes peeled. We heard that such a sale, $5 for World of Warcraft time cards, would be revealed in the impending GameStop ad. After the advertisement went public and did not reflect that offer, many readers asked us to confirm whether or not the rumor we heard had any accuracy. Rather than simply say no, as we should have, we contacted a local GameStop outlet and asked the manager on duty. The manager informed us that there was truth to the rumor and an as-yet-unreleased Black Friday ad would include that offer.

As we now know, that was not the case. We don't blame anyone but ourselves. It's very likely that the employee was referring to the original Black Friday advertisement, a World of Warcraft Battle Chest included in the purchase of another Blizzard title or the Battle Chest on its own for $4.99, unaware that we were discussing something else entirely, a World of Warcraft 60 day game card for $4.99. That isn't their fault, it's ours. We've all been in their position before, in a retail environment trying to make sense of a customer's question, especially during the holiday season. The rumor we heard had no basis in truth and this person didn't know what we meant with our request for that reason. We went ahead with our second post, confirming the sale, when we shouldn't have done so.

We were overeager with our confirmation. Were it any other day, it may not have had such a negative impact on our readers, but it was Black Friday. Many of you spent hours standing in the cold among enormous crowds for a deal that didn't exist based on an inaccurate report. We can't give you those hours of your life back, but we are genuinely sorry. In the future, we will be more mindful about how we handle rumors and the sources we use for confirmation or denial of them.

WoW Insider/Wowhead Meetup
Last night, WoW Insider and Wowhead hosted their annual party at the Annabella Hotel. The party was from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. PST, but the line began before 5. It was at capacity very quickly, leaving many people standing in line to get in. Gamebreaker.tv broadcast the event, conducting interviews and otherwise putting on a good show.

At the same time, many people were lined up at the Anaheim Convention Center to pick up their BlizzCon badges. There were quite a few tweets from attendees complaining about how long the line was, but at least the weather was good and there were things to look at.

In addition to our call for hunter and mage columnist applications, our rogue columnist position has opened! In this position, your primary duties will be the production of your column on a weekly basis, but opportunities for additional work as a news blogger may arise over time should you desire them.

You can find the full instructions on how to apply on our applications page. If you have prior blogging experience, make sure you mention that in your application along with a link to your prior work. The deadline for your application is end-of-day on Friday, August 30, so work quickly. Do not confuse that with the deadline for the hunter and mage positions, which is Friday, August 23.

These two articles, one from an interview with 2P, and another from an interview with QQ, made the rounds yesterday. They're interesting quotes and information from Ghostcrawler talking with people overseas at Chinajoy. In the interviews Ghostcrawler goes on, as he is often wont to do, about WoW and the decision making behind their changes.

The reaction to these articles created a lot of confusion. So I thought it'd be worth noting the things that Ghostcrawler confirmed and did not confirm. I've made a list:

Ghostcrawler was at Chinajoy Blizzard thinks WoW can handle another class/role beyond DPS/Healing/Tanking -- a "buffer" Naga Playable
Content areas available to explore the lore in: Trolls, Burning Legion, Emerald Dream

It surprised me to see the numbers of comments around the interweb saying that Ghostcrawler outright confirmed the next expansion, or that he said Naga were going to be a playable race. The new translation posted by 2P outright kills any idea of that, yet even the original interview never said that (just that they were thinking of it at one point, which was incorrect).

The only thing that was confirmed is stuff I've spoken to Blizzard about personally, and that was that Ghostcrawler was at Chinajoy, a big game conference. The "Confirmed Loosely" category is for things that were explicitly stated in the original interview articles, which we had translated by multiple reliable sources -- however Blizzard has not come outright and said them again.

And that's okay -- we work with Blizzard and their folks to bring you the news; however when something is said (as was the case about a buff class/role) we'll run with it. But even in that bit of news, no where did Ghostcrawler say that it's happening.

The things in the "Confirmed Loosely" category should also not come as a shock to anyone. A new class? It's not like that hasn't happened twice before. And more Troll lore? Check. Burning Legion and Emerald Dream? There's already books about them and tons of hints dropped by Wrathion about the return of the Legion. None of this is ground breaking.

Ghostcrawler thinks of a lot of things. WoW, ponies, gin in coffee, etc... Take it for what it is, and don't make it more than that.

Update: We are issuing a correction. Ghostcrawler does not put gin in his coffee, he drinks gin out of a coffee cup. WoW Insider apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.
