WoW Moviewatch: Battle for Town Square: Winterveil Day 1

Khadgar seems to be everywhere. He's giving you quests and following you around Draenor, but he's also set up camp in the capitol cities of Azeroth to try to recruit fresh faces for the battle against the Iron Horde. (We'd ask how he does it, but the answer would probably involve complicated magical theory and we just don't have the patience.)

It's a practical plan: of course Khadgar would want to stake out the busiest areas to catch the attention of adventurers... but it seems to have set him at odds with Greatfather Winter, who's recently arrived to ring in Winter Veil. The latest machinima from Wowcrendor sets us up for a holiday-themed series that pits Khadgar against Greatfather Winter... but as to who will win and who will lose in this epic battle, we'll just have to keep watching.

WoW Moviewatch: Rent-An-Orc

I didn't really think I needed an orc in my life, but I may have just changed my mind thanks to today's machinima offering. Rent-An-Orc is a pretty short little film, and I think this may be the first piece I've seen from Youtuber wthMerhaba. It's a simple premise -- Ragnar the Bloodthirsty has come under some financial strain, and is now offering his services via informative infomercial to assist would-be customers with their lives in a variety of colorful and suitably orcish ways.

Sounds simple enough, and the film itself is pretty simple too, but the subject material is funny, the voiceovers work really well, and the added bonus to the offer had me in stitches. Sometimes things don't have to be incredibly fancy to be perfect -- a good joke and a good delivery will get you everywhere. If you like what you see, check out wthMerhaba's Youtube channel for more. Here's hoping we'll see a lot more from him in the future.

WoW Moviewatch: Starcraft Evacuation

Okay, obviously this isn't Warcraft -- heck, I'm not even sure we can classify it as machinima. But this is the second place winner from the 2014 BlizzCon movie contest, so I thought you guys might like to see it. Starcraft: Evacuation is a short film by Youtuber Peter Stroll about a small Terran mining settlement that is under attack -- the story is relatively straightforward.

What's pretty cool about this particular movie is that sure, there's live action, but there's also some visual effects included that are surprisingly well done for an amateur effort. My only lament is that the film cuts off just when I wanted to see what was going to happen next. Maybe we'll see a sequel in time for the next BlizzCon? Let's hope so.

WoW Moviewatch: Warlords Countdown

Look, I'm pretty sure by this point in Warlords of Draenor you can automatically win over my heart in any machinima just by putting together a cheery video of any of the titular Warlords being happy, sunny, and dancing. But David Nguyen went one step further and put that all into an almost shot-for-shot recreation of the original Care Bears opening sequence, which just set the bar that much higher for anyone wanting to win me over with silly orc warlord shenanigans. Warlords Countdown is a pretty short piece, comparatively speaking, but I loved every second of it. If you like what you see, head over to David's Youtube channel and check out his other work.

WoW Moviewatch: The Sore Loser

I first saw The Sore Loser while standing in line for the BlizzCon store -- it was the first place winner of the 2014 BlizzCon movie contest. And even without quite being able to hear every line over the din of the crowd, I still ended up laughing by the end of the short. The film, from Mushanga's Machinima Movies, features voice acting by Jesse Cox, Rawrbug and Chase Johson, all of whom were absolutely excellent. The effects were great too -- I loved the teleportation sequence. Between the film work, the story, and the voice acting, it definitely deserved first place. Take a look, and if you like what you see, be sure to check out Mushanga's Youtube channel for more.

WoW Moviewatch: The Force Awakens

We've all seen the new Star Wars trailer and, with Blizzard's help, started wondering just what an Azerothian interpretation of the film might be like. However, Ian Beckman's taken the idea even further with a WoW machinima timed to the original trailer's sound and dialog. And the finished product manages to hold together the plot surprisingly well, from Gorehowl (with mini-Gorehowl crossguards) replacing the infamous lightsaber to Khadgar on a rocket replacing the Millennium Falcon.

My only complaint: where are the gnomes and goblins?! This high-tech crossover universe was sadly lacking all of Azeroth's engineering talent... much like actual Warcraft trailers. Oh well. While we're still waiting for the goblins and gnomes to have their day, we can enjoy this machinima.

WoW Moviewatch: Life in Draenor

We're all getting used to our lives in Draenor (in garrisons and out), and Slightly Impressive has put together a machinima that sums up the Draenor day-to-day, from mostly-safe in-garrison gathering to the dangers of garrison envy. But more importantly, this video raises a key question about the expansion: just how does Khadgar manage to show up everywhere with a problem for you to solve? It's a mystery for the ages!

Instead of giving yourself a headache trying to figure it out, we'd recommend just watching the video -- or taking a nostalgic trip through WoW history with Slightly Impressive's other machinima.

WoW Moviewatch: Stopping the Iron Horde

Man, if only we'd been thinking. Stopping the Iron Horde from Mooclucking is a pretty short little piece of machinima, but it points out an almost painfully obvious solution to our little rampaging Warlord problem. I have no idea why we didn't think of it before -- why not fight iron with ... well, iron? The only thing that made this piece more amusing was the panic of pretty much everyone in the Stormwind throne room at the thought of yet another expansion to contend with. Honestly, I can't really blame them -- by now, those guys are probably getting a little touchy when it comes to sudden announcements.

WoW Moviewatch: A Typical Garrison Day

There may not be as many dailies this expansion, but that doesn't mean that the daily grind is gone, as Wowcrendor explores in this video, which outlines a typical garrison day for (probably) all of us. The endless fishing quests, the failed missions, the followers that just won't stop talking...

But maybe Crendor's typical day isn't your typical day. So what do you say, readers? What scenes match up with your daily garrison grind?

WoW Moviewatch: Pride

Fair warning: This is a very, very long machinima, clocking in at over and hour and a half, and there is some NSFW language at various points in the film. If, however, you were looking for the ultimate in Siege of Orgrimmar story machinimas, this is it. We featured the trailer for Pride just before BlizzCon, and the movie itself came out on November 5, just as everything was beginning to kick off in Anaheim. However, the trailer has nothing on the full film, which features the story of a group of horde heroes who have let the Sha of Pride tear their group apart, but manage to pull together to achieve the impossible, and defeat Garrosh Hellscream.

The film is a pretty amazing combination of Blizzard cinematics and voiceovers interspersed with the main story written by Suge. And on top of all of that, actual raid footage from the Siege of Orgrimmar was also used to full effect, showcasing guilds The Fallen and Blow fighting the 25m Heroic (now Mythic) version of Garrosh Hellscream and his cohorts. It's a pretty amazing film, and although there are a few voice actors with less than optimal microphones, it really doesn't matter so much in the long run. Pride may run a little long, but it's worth the watch.

WoW Moviewatch: Tree of Life

I'd missed the first part of today's story when we featured it a little over a year ago, but both the first part of this tale and today's Moviewatch are pretty amazing. Nixxiom originally released The Druid last year, a story about a druid who shares a story with a priestess of Elune. It was a really well done story, and the visual effects, despite using the older models, worked remarkably well in conjunction with it.

Tree of Life returns to Ashevn the druid, who is still telling stories in the Temple of Elune. This time, there is no script, simply a haunting soundtrack to accompany the visuals. And even without words -- maybe even because there are no words -- the movie is incredibly effective. I really love the play of black and white vs. color that takes place throughout the piece, it really hammers home the key parts of the tale. Give it a watch -- and if you like it, be sure to check out Nixxiom's Youtube channel for more machinima.

WoW Moviewatch: Warlords of Draenor 8 Bit

Okay, so it's not 8 bit exactly, but I really don't care. Warlords of Draenor 8 Bit is Ian Beckman's attempt at turning the Warlords of Draenor trailer into something incredibly old-school, and I think he manages to successfully do that -- it might not be NES, but it's a least late SNES/Sega Genesis, or early PS1. And beyond that, it's a nostalgia laden reminder of an era in which we all thought these kinds of graphics were astonishingly cool.

And they totally were, back then. I'm not sure what Warlords of Draenor would've played like if it weren't an MMO -- certainly the old consoles weren't capable of anything like what we've got today. Maybe something more akin to those old school point and click adventure games, like the ill-fated Warcraft Adventures that never saw the light of day. I got a good laugh out of this piece though, it was really well done. If you like what you see, be sure to check out Ian Beckman's Youtube channel for more machinima shorts.

WoW Moviewatch: Trick or Treat

Yes, I know it's a week late. I still laughed at I don't think he's going to give us any candy so here you go. Wowcrendor, Trick or Treat, happy week after Halloween everyone.

I mean you're all at BlizzCon anyway, it's like I'm posting Moviewatch all for myself, might as well be something that amuses me.

WoW Moviewatch: Talk Common to Me

It's not often that a song parody will actually make me laugh out loud, but Talk Common to Me managed to do the job pretty effectively at 40 seconds in. I do love well-written song parodies, and this one was done perfectly, performed flawlessly by Kavo, Letomi and Truff. The machinima was created by Khayllys, who is responsible for more than a few of my favorite films over the past couple of years.

Clever and well sung music parodies aside, what I really enjoy about this particular video is that there's a mix of the old models and the new. Seeing them at times even side by side just highlights how much of an improvement the updates are -- the sheer amount of expressive emotion the new faces are capable of is pretty staggering. I can't wait to see the new models start showing up in more films as more machinima artists start getting a handle on them. If you like the video, be sure to check out Khayllys' Youtube channel for more.

WoW Moviewatch: Pride - Trailer

Machinima artist Suge has been quietly working on a full-out movie involving the events of the Siege of Orgrimmar, and put together a trailer for the film that includes some character work as well as a selection of fight scenes and actual raiding. With all of that thrown together in a two minute trailer, Pride looks like it's going to be absolutely stunning when it comes out. There are a few things every movie trailer should do, but top of that list is making the viewer want to watch the actual film, and Suge totally nailed that here.

Between gorgeous video editing, some pretty awesome voice work, and a music track that is suitably ominous and inspiring, Suge has put together a perfect trailer. I particularly love the way audio tracks from the Siege of Orgrimmar are interwoven among the voice acting. The film looks like it's going to be featuring some fights from the heroic -- now mythic -- difficulty of Siege of Orgrimmar, which should be a treat in and of itself. Take a look at the trailer, and sit tight for the full film, which should be out soon.
