Apple iPod touch 2G and nano 4G: The Engadget Review {Engadget}

Sep 19th 2008 8:15PM I've owned a lot of ipods and I had high hopes for the touch, but until they put some serious storage on it, I can't see it as anything but a toy. So this very week i bought myself a Zune 120 and i am pretty happy with it. The new 120gb iPod seems like an afterthought- a placeholder amongst the competitor's high capacity players.

The iTunes Genius feature is kind of cool, but i prefer the personal touch on playlists. It might be perfect for quick fix, I have doubts about it being useful for things like sharing music with friends and lovers. Many seem to be comparing Genius to Mixview but I don't think it's fair as they are completely different tools. That said, MixView is pretty cool and has huge potential. It has me playing and exploring for embarrassing chunks of time as well as buying music that normally would have slipped under my notice. I keep waiting for iTunes to slim down and stop looking like Excel. I see Apple as moving toward a one size fits all device and the Zune focusing on the music lover. I know which path I prefer, though in the grand scheme it probably means Apple will not be knocked from the #1 for a very long while.

If Apple wants my attention and dollars back they are going to have to put top of the line storage in their top of the line iPod and focus more, like Zune seems to be, on the music experience.

Seinfeld and Gates get in touch with regular folks {Engadget}

Sep 12th 2008 8:55AM I think these ads are quite good. Gates has been speaking for a long time about computers integrating into our lives on a more fundamental level. Neither the mac or the pc does that right now. This ad acknowledges that. Jerry and Bill trying to fit in to these lives, the same way computers wedge themselves into ours. Computers don't adapt to us, we adapt to them. It's been Bill's future-state mantra for a while. In the meantime we get a 'real' family with life type things going on. They aren't you're turtle-neck wearing slighty condescending types. And, in the background is the grandma, the guest of several years, ignored and resented, but is the only one getting any real work done. Like a certain OS i know.

Plus, it's funny.

These ads are not about specifically about Vista vs. Mac. It about how these machines should integrate into our lives, while remembering what they have done for us so far.

Brack clarifies graphical update plans {WoW}

Aug 28th 2008 9:26PM and those same people without money pay $15/month for a game? If a $400 investment (good for 3-5 years) is a strain on your finances, its hard to imagine that wow is not also something of a strain.

That said...I'm not arguing for a graphics overhaul that makes wow require AoC like hardware, but don't ask that it never happen. I like wow's art style, but improvements to the graphic engine can only mean a better realization of the artist's vision.

Funcom: WoW is McDonald's, AoC is steak {WoW}

Jun 26th 2008 7:01PM The AoC combat is not for me. After a time it felt like nothing more than console-style twitchy button mashing and it grew old quickly. Wow's system, if you play your class right, seems allows for more finesse and strategy- you essentially build combos on the fly and vary them from encounter to encounter.

AoC also felt more like a collection of game levels and not a virtual world. *shrug*

I might return to AoC in a few months, for now though I will stick with wow.

Richard Bartle grudgingly plays World of Warcraft {WoW}

Jun 20th 2008 5:48PM Setting aside his criticisms of WoW, I don't understand how one can consider oneself a virtual world designer or consultant when you don't enjoy playing in them. He uses authors and movie directors as examples of people who might read books or watch movies with a different perspective- no doubt that is true; but those people still actually enjoy and willingly read/watch other people's books and movies.

He begrudgingly looks into these virtual worlds. Regardless of his MUD history, I find his attitude arrogant and his take on the genre highly suspect.

WoW Moviewatch: Back In Your Head {WoW}

WoW Moviewatch: Back In Your Head {WoW}

Jun 16th 2008 1:51PM nice work, but if you are going to use Tegan and Sarah the video should have been a romantic trist/breakup between Jaina and Sylvannus Windrunner.
