Mar 18th 2008 2:28AM It looks to me like some of the swirly Photoshop brushes I've seen around the net (though I'm sure he's customized them, if not made his own outright). There are also nifty particle programs for creating cool swirls and the like.
Those are what I use (and have used, on some occasions). I think the effect is overdone to the point where you can't really tell what some of the weapons are -- not all magical weapons should exude magic *all* the time.
To his credit though, I think that a lot of time, work and effort has gone into it. It's not what I would go for personally, but I can definitely appreciate the work.
Feb 14th 2008 12:41PM Wish it used the phoenix model instead of the carrion bird (vulture) model, though.
Feb 13th 2008 3:32AM A couple of reasons, Deepmaur. First, I don't play a Druid -- while I can speak fairly intelligently about their capabilities and talents, as I've seen a lot of them, I lack the deep knowledge to get into a serious discussion on the various nuances of the specs you mentioned. Personally, I think that kind of deep conversation is great, but is best handled by the guys who write the Druid column (hint, hint, John P).
Second, and I'm sure some people will disagree, but not every Build Shop can be about the ultimate min-max spec. This column is meant to be accessible to players of all levels who have questions about their spec, and sometimes critiquing a build that can be improved (like this one) is more helpful to those who enjoy their class but haven't mastered it yet.
I think the comments thus far have been very good, helping to dissect why you *shouldn't* take certain talents and why you should not pass up others.
Personally, I love dissecting builds like this because I think they present a much better opportunity for learning.
Feb 7th 2008 4:07AM I really don't appreciate the attack. If you've got something constructive to say, then by all means, say it.
But let's keep the insults out of it. There is a link to the Buildshop email at the end of every article -- if you'd like to suggest a build for the column, send it in and I'll be happy to consider it.
Seriously though, the comments you've made repeatedly are unkind, as you go far beyond just insinuating that I'm some sort of shill... you downright accuse me of it. Regardless of what you might think, I take this column very seriously.
I also find it interesting that you'll call the Tankadin build from two weeks ago "terrible," when in reality there are only 3 talent choices that are different from what your character is currently using: 1) You took Anticipation, 2) You did not take Spell Warding, and 3) You took Improved Judgement.
You gain 2.5% physical mitigation from Anticipation, but you lose 4% spell mitigation by not having Spell Warding (which can't be made up for with "normal" tanking gear). As far as usefulness, you win on Improved Judgement. As far as utility, *despite* not working on bosses, I still find Vindication to be superior. I don't think a difference of 3 talents qualifies as "terrible."
Not every build out there is going to be perfect for everyone. I don't feel I should have to put up a disclaimer if I want to discuss alternatives to the cookie cutter builds that certain people like to tout as the "best." There is no "best."
And that goes for every build on Buildshop, not just Paladin builds. So like I said -- if you'd like to leave some constructive criticism, terrific. If you'd like to submit a build via email, great! But leave the personal attacks out of it, because they will not be tolerated.
Feb 2nd 2008 5:16AM If you'd bothered to look, you'd see I posted one at 1920x1200, and one at 1600x1050.
Fairly certain that's widescreen.
Jan 23rd 2008 2:47PM Added a link to the 1920x1200 version. Enjoy, Niko!
Jan 23rd 2008 12:20PM I think you're misreading the tooltip. With 5 points, Reckoning has a 10% chance whenever you're hit to grant you up to 4 extra swings within 8 seconds.
Jan 23rd 2008 12:17PM No, there is no math on Vindication, and I doubt I'd be able to produce any to support the decision to take it. However, not every talent choice needs to be backed up with theorycrafting.
For my Paladin's current role, these are the talents I've found useful.
I find it interesting that there are so many people willing to pick this spec apart so thoroughly. This is one possible spec out of many, and not all specs are min-max specs. Build Shop is about talent discussion, not about trying to come up with the "best" build.
You guys have made your points, you disagree with some of the talent selections and that is fine, but let's move on now. If you'd like to suggest an alternate build that you want to see covered on Build Shop, you can always email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jan 23rd 2008 2:00AM That was a well thought out, lucid argument, Thoma. I'm certainly not sneezing at 2.5% avoidance, merely suggesting that in most cases there are better ways to spend 5 talent points. For a resist fight, I would probably respec my Paladin to include Anticipation. Others may want to have it all the time and that's fine.
I know about the "Do Not Hit" list with the Pally bubble (Divine Shield works in a similar fashion), but if nothing else it's handy to have available for emergencies as often as possible, so for me it's worthwhile. Are there better talents that these points could be spent on? Probably. Is Build Shop about making the absolute best build for all situations 100% of the time? No. No build can do that.
As for Vindication, I'm aware that many people don't like it because it doesn't work on bosses, but I still find it useful, hence its inclusion here. Imp Seal of the Crusader is a fine alternative that also functions as a raid friendly buff as well.
