Blizzard auctioning off old servers for charity {WoW}

Oct 13th 2011 4:27PM People are going to hate this, and I'm fine with that. The truth is ugly.

St. Jude is a terrible cause to give money to. They haven't been at the forefront of pediatric cancer research and care for decades, but what they do spend money on - LOTS of money on - is marketing and campaigns like this. Everyone thinks they are the be-all-end-all of pediatric cancer care - and they were, once upon a time when Danny Thomas was alive - but they aren't anymore.

Please, give your money to more deserving causes and hospitals. St. Jude has FAR more money than it knows what to do with, spends FAR too much on what boils down to marketing, and FAR too little on actual research and patient care.

Patch 4.3 PTR: Transmogrification and Void Storage gallery {WoW}

Sep 28th 2011 2:35PM This comes down to the hard realities of data storage and database efficiency. Void Storage is nothing more than a list of item ID's. Everything in your "normal" storage has an item ID, plus who made it (for craftables), whether it's bound, what enchants, what gems, what reforging is in place, etc. All of that has to be stored, indexed, managed, etc.

Even for Blizz, processor power and SAN storage are not free. If they gave everyone even a new bank tab, that's 10m players * number of items * amount of storage + processing power. Small things add up fast.

Yeah, we all would like certain things to be better, but this is one of the clearest compromises to basic IT costs that I've seen.

Patch 4.3 PTR: Transmogrification and Void Storage gallery {WoW}

Sep 28th 2011 2:32PM "although most players have so much gold on their hands by now"

Who ARE these people? Seriously, I'm the only person I know who has more than a couple thousand total, and that's 90% because of a lucky i359 BOE I got early in Cataclysm.

The idea that everyone is running around with gold overflowing from their pockets strikes me as ludicrous.

Spiritual Guidance: Revisiting The Burning Crusade and Wrath, solo {WoW}

Sep 14th 2011 7:57PM If you're going to solo Karazhan, note that the Chess event is a real bitch due to its mechanics.

Bejeweled 3 headed to consoles {Joystiq}

Jun 21st 2011 6:12PM And yet strangely, this isn't available for iOS. I would have guessed that's a much more important market than consoles.

When do you play Bejeweled? When you're sitting on a couch for a long session, or when you're waiting in your doctor's office?

Rumor: Lion near to going live {TUAW.com}

May 26th 2011 6:52PM I'd be fairly skeptical of this, given how many changes we're still seeing from the last developer preview. Internal testing doesn't even mean GM, and it's usually at least a few weeks between GM and release.

I have no problem waiting a couple extra months for the extra refinement that would bring. Who knows, they may even decide to roll back the universally-despised changes to iCal...

MacDefender malware protection and removal guide {TUAW.com}

May 19th 2011 1:04PM I'm sorry, but anyone *stupid* enough to install and pay for this when it has such obvious problems (broken English throughout, poor layout and stretched text) and is such an obvious scam - well, fools and their money are soon parted.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Translucent {TUAW.com}

May 18th 2011 3:19PM I just bought iStat Menus. I grumbled at the relatively high price, but the fact is it's just the best-designed and best-maintained offering of the sort.

Ramp Champ goes free in App Store {TUAW.com}

May 6th 2011 5:59PM Still prefer Skee-Ball. RampChamp just looks busy to me. But it's hard to beat free.

Ask TUAW Video Edition: VPN services {TUAW.com}

May 3rd 2011 1:18PM Of course, if you're really worried about security, you can also run your own VPN server. This requires some complicated setup - you need a Mac that's on 24x7, dynamic DNS, and some minor port forwarding, but then you know *exactly* what's going on and who can access your traffic. No third parties needed.

I use iVPN, but EasyVPN is also a simple way to set this up on your own computer.
