Apr 22nd 2011 8:04PM My apologies to Mat and the rest of the community.
Apr 22nd 2011 5:01PM "WoW's subscriber number is not the number of people who have played WoW in its lifetime, nor how many people have made accounts and just let them sit dormant or character-vacant. The 12 million players number is the number of people who played and paid within the last 30 days."
Then you should probably update this sentence to reflect that, instead of implying the subscriber numbers means people that are actually *playing* within the last 30 days. The subscriber numbers reflect the number of people who have either activated a new account, or have given them money to play the game in the past 30 days. If you meant "dormant or character-vacant" to imply an expired account (it did not to me) then you should probably reword it.
Yes, I'm being nitpicky. I like your column a lot, and being about the law I expect it to be factually correct. :)
Apr 22nd 2011 4:27PM Mat, you're wrong. According to the language, a subscriber is someone who fits any one of those three criteria. The "last 30 days" criteria only applies to Internet Game Room players. So people who have auto-renewing subscriptions and don't actually play still count as subscribers, as they fall under criteria 1.
Dec 29th 2010 1:03PM I'm in like Flynn.
Oct 4th 2010 4:07PM My favorite was when I noticed there's a specific statistic for number of times killed by Hogger. So for the heck of it I decided to take my DK out to bump that stat. I find Hogger, and I sit there. And sit there. And sit there. Finally, after a few minutes, he kills me. "Hooray!" I think, immediately opening the stats window to see the change. But, it's still zero. WTF? I close the window to find myself staring at myself, as a ghoul. I was spec'd unholy, so when I died, I reanimated as a ghoul for 45 seconds, at which point I died again. However, because that's what killed me the second time, not Hogger, I STILL didn't get credit.
Jul 18th 2010 12:13PM I played with Mumble a year or so ago, and I agree, the primary problem with Mumble adoption is inertia. This has motivated me to take another stab at this. What are you using to host your server? Are you paying for a hosting service to manage it, or do you maintain it yourself?
Feb 11th 2010 10:20AM I like this addon a lot for 5-mans, not so I can bitch about undergeared people, but so I can quickly (/eg summary) figure out the makeup of the group. Do I see lots of 100%s and average item level of 232 or more? Blow the doors off and get it done. Tank or healer in the upper 100s? Throttle back the aggro generation. Someone never been in here before? Ask them if they need the quest and maybe don't select fast forward options (much as I absolutely HATE Jaina now, thanks for that ICC 5-mans, I'm looking at you) so they can experience the dungeon fully.
That having been said, it's not going to tell you everything. I recently ran a PuG Forge of Souls with a warlock with 2 pieces of tier 10 and a good chunk of heroic ToC gear, and yet his DPS was under 1200. I have no idea if he was ignorant or lazy, though.
Oct 13th 2009 12:14PM I would like a flag of ownership please. Best trinket EVAR
Oct 8th 2009 5:55PM I'd bind it to my Wing Clip/Raptor Strike spam macro.
Oct 15th 2008 5:19PM I could be wrong, but didn't Blizzard basically invent the skill/talent tree concept in Diablo 2, then refined it for WoW?
Just asking, since it's been claimed the Blizzard invented nothing in WoW.
