Nov 20th 2007 8:33AM I played Dark Ages too. The RP in that game was a lot of fun. I was a monk and I had actual students. In order to progress they had to pass these tests where they responded to lore questions. I wasn't supposed to warn them ahead of time just teach them the lore. We would sit by the river that ran through the starter town and they would repeat these mantra things so they would know them.
You could also go to college in the game, even teach a class yourself.
Nov 20th 2007 8:19AM We used to have this when games had meaningful travel. You got to know the other people from your starting city in Everquest, and in FFXI because it was dangerous to travel too far. I still keep in touch with many people from the Lakshmi Windhurst NA launch.
Everquest Online Adventures also had smaller servers (due to not being super popular) and long travel times between cities. There were no zones and without help it was very easy to get lost.
I think what you are suggesting would in many ways not be moving forward but moving back to something we have lost.
