Duel of the fates: Two class previews outline the positives and negatives of SWTOR {Massively}

Jun 15th 2011 8:09AM @RedWolf SWTOR is WoW in space. Aka KOTOR Online, aka SWG v2. There is NOTHING new in this title at all.

The core gameplay and mechanics are stock standard "MMO", found in a dozen such games out already.

The much touted story is Star Wars, told and retold many times in books, movies, single player games etc etc.

Neither of things mean this game will suck badly, it will get played, alot. It just has nothing to offer we havent already seen.

People migrated to RIFT a bit because it offered something new. I suspect people will try TERA and like some of the different mechanics about it, and some of the political system stuff. Same reason EVE was popular, it had something new.

Familiar is cool, but new is cool too.

Jun 14th 2011 12:41PM @Beltyra it's not that simple. Positioning is important, what your oponent is doing is important, you use different attacks and different defences based on how the situation unfolds. It's a bit closer to something like DCUO's combat system, but even then it's beyond that.

All the footage I have seen, and the developer commentary I have seen, and the feedback from people actually playing the game, leads me to think it's not going to be the same old same old, and definately not going to be trading 1212123 for AAAAAAB.

Jun 14th 2011 11:34AM Also I found some good information here : http://www.terafans.com/topic/8803-k-tera-press-conference-demon-beast-of-destruction/

Looking forward to seeing this game mature, i think it has a lot to offer, lots of new concepts and mechanics. It's not going to be a slayer and perfect day 1, but I think it will progress and mature as time goes on if BH are diligent about implementing some of what they promise.

Jun 14th 2011 11:13AM @Raikulxox yes like a book, Except I dont pay $15 a month to read a book. Actually it's like a choose your own adventure book.

Jun 14th 2011 10:48AM @cotheer SWTOR has the exact same quest type system as every other MMO. You still go out and escort this guy, kill 10 of them, take this thing to that place. Sticking some dialogue selectors and randomly picking the response is still a gussied up choose your own adventure.

this works well in single player games but this much touted "story" doesnt work as well in MMO's where there are groups of you moving through the world changing it. Not a stab at SWTOR either, most MMO's suffer from the same issue with story. How to be the hero when you are one of half a million hero's.

Didnt we "do" this Star Wars story thing in like 6 movies, many many many books and a bunch of single player games? Grabbing decade old core MMO mechanics and bolting on a story does not make a AAA MMO.

AAA single player game, for sure.

Jun 14th 2011 10:18AM Nothing new or interesting to see here I think. I'm going to check out TERA, they seem to be one of the only companies willing to take a risk and do something outside the "WoW" model. Especially with their combat. The videos I have seen of it make it look very fluid and require more thinking that 12121212 3. Not going to be a good fit for more WoW/TOR players though I think.

Jun 14th 2011 10:05AM @(Unverified)

It's for those exact reasons that i will be trying TERA when it comes out. Much more action oriented combat system, some cool political systems, gorgous world. I think it's going to differ a little from the cookie cutter MMO's we see now.

Darkfall activity report highlights game-changing revamps, recent patch {Massively}

Apr 5th 2011 1:32PM What i'd like to know is why my recent Darkfall install came with files for w3af (web app testing frame work), ovaldi (open source OVAL interpreter) and a file with some logs detailing some of their internal server names. I work in the security field so seeing these names popup when it was installing was VERY interesting.

The Daily Grind: Should the MMO holy trinity be a thing of the past? {Massively}

Mar 13th 2011 11:32AM YES, YES and YES.

nothing smacks more of the need to abolish this old out dated concept than the "shortages" you seem to find often in games of tanks or healers.

If not abolishing the roles entirely, at least make it so any class/skill spec can fill any role.

tanking, Healing and DPS should be a playstyle choice, not a character class choice.
