Aug 5th 2011 8:00AM AD&D: Forgotten Realms (not like DDO, I want the whole continent)
MechWarrior / BattleTech
DarkSword (mostly a book trilogy but it had a P&P RPG companion book called DarkSword Adventure)
Jul 15th 2011 7:50PM @cowboyhugbees Perfect World also bought Runic Games a couple years back. They gave them more resources and left them alone. Look how good Torchlight came out to be.
Cryptic will be more than fine, they'll just keep getting better.
Jul 15th 2011 6:27PM @Dril The license is on a "per game" basis. SOE does not have a broad-use license where they can build & run as many Star Wars games as they want. The SWG-specific licensing was expiring in 2012.
Jul 15th 2011 5:30PM I just cannot wait for the SWTOR launch and the marketing push that will come with it. We all know about SWTOR and KOTOR, but there are a LOT of Star Wars fan who have never played KOTOR nor have heard of it. LucasArts will try to market this to all Star Wars fans out there.
Now picture trade chat:
"WHERE IS LUUKE??? I WANT TO KILLS HIS BABY FACE AND TAKE IS SORD"
"WHY R THEIR SO MANY JEDIS??? TEY ALL GOT KILLED BY ANUKEN IN TEH MOVIE"
"I WANT A ALUMINUM FALCON, WHERE DO I BUY???"
Jul 15th 2011 5:21PM @willflynne You are right, they did take too long, they were hoping to dodge that bullet. No such luck, we all have machine guns.
And I know the license is the problem, I did not forget about that when I compared to Vanguard and Planetside, but LucasArts could have crafted a special licensing agreement with SOE that oulw dhave been based more on profit sharing than a lump sum to allow for a F2P model or continued sub-based operations.
The bottom line is simple:
- LucasArts is a "has been" company that is desperately clinging to its only viable franchise to stay afloat, and failing at it most of the time
- LucasArts is the primary cause of the early SWG launch in 2003, and of the pressure to produce the CU and the NGE in 2005
- LucasArts is worried that SWTOR might not be the "savior game" they are hoping it will be after all the money they sunk into it
- SOE has never shutdown an MMO to which they owned all the rights
Yes, I will try SWTOR, but I am going in with a bad taste in my mouth at this point, and they better blow my f***ing mind away
Jul 15th 2011 3:33PM @Space Cobra True. My point though is that for once, SOE is not the bad guy here.
Jul 15th 2011 3:27PM "The harsh reality is that we've reached a point where the game is no longer a sustainable business."
I call bull***. SOE has MMOs like Vanguard and Planetside with smaller populations and they keep running them. LucasArts are greedy bastards who could not care less about players, so they just made SOE shutdown the game so they never have to hear about it ever again and only focus on their new shiny "Talking World of KOTORcraft".
My share of the blame still lies 100% on LucasArts.
Jul 13th 2011 9:56PM @Kalec And just like SQL is often pronounced "sequel" instead of Ess-cue-elle.
Jul 8th 2011 6:11PM I thoguht Damion Schubert was the Lead Combat Designer?
