Jun 9th 2009 8:53PM Ok, here's something you should know about owning a MB/MBP: When you sleep the computer by closing it, the drive writes all the RAM to disk in case of battery failure. So ram is still kept resident in memory with a small electrical charge, and is also on disk. Good redundancy.
Writing the ram to disk means that the disk is going thru a flurry of activity until its done, which, depending on how much ram is being used, and your disk's speed, can take upwards of 10-15 seconds.
Unfortunately, if you pick the computer up right away, you're rotating and moving very fast-spinning wheels. What eventually happens is that if you do it enough, you run the risk of the a drive head running into the disk. This will cause Really Bad Errors.
So one of the best things you can do after closing the MB/MBP is to wait until the light on it goes from solid to pulsing, meaning it is now fully in sleep mode.
Jun 18th 2008 8:01PM I did that once in Westfall. I went back at a high lvl into Moonbrook and killed every human out of spite and revenge.
Jun 3rd 2008 7:04PM I tried this a few days ago when i saw it in the upcoming games on digg (never made it to the front page) - its actually not bad, and that B maps to your bags, C to character, L to logs, etc is pretty cool. The humor is pretty good too (There are two guys in the Goldshire-esque town, one named Marx, the other named Freud)
May 28th 2008 7:05PM That's an excellent idea. I'm guildless now so PUGs are about all I have anyway, and the skills each player has makes you have to learn how to read them very quickly. I find I also end up doing a lot of informal directing, even when not the party leader. Maybe I'm just bossy :)
May 19th 2008 6:06PM I think this move is at least in part about the central gov't being able to say "Hey don't forget, we're still in charge of everything you see and do here" to its people.
May 19th 2008 5:28PM "China started a three-day period of national mourning on Monday for the victims of the May 12 earthquake, halting recreational activities such as online gaming and movie screenings, along with darkening the home pages of major Web portals and even suspending the Olympic torch relay. During the mourning period, all public amusements will be suspended and flags nationwide must be kept at half-mast, China's central government declared."
How typically autocratic of the PRC. A tradgedy like this isn't served by such lip-service - maybe they could focus their time and energy on making buildings that aren't made from paper machet. Oh well, I'm sure there are still plenty of pirate DVDs to buy for pennies on the dollar there.
May 16th 2008 5:40PM something people are forgetting is that more detail = bigger models and textures (bigger in terms of disk space), and longer disk access times. That said, I'd still love to see it :)
May 16th 2008 4:18PM re Uncanny Valley
Bingo! Games that try to be too realistic just look weird and creepy. LotRO is a good example, Oblivion is a really good one too (it doesn't help that Bethesda seems to hate any of their characters looking even mildly attractive)
May 15th 2008 7:05PM "This interview is over" You can tell which faction *he* prefers :)
