The plat you lose in buying elite tomes, which go for 2-5 plat generally (a little more than that for a couple professions) is more than made up for in buying the non-elite tomes, which generally go for 2-300g a piece instead of the 1 plat at the trainer.

The skill unlock packs and mercenaries are HUGE gameplay advantages for new players (this is coming from someone who just started playing the game a couple months ago). Combine the skill unlocks and the mercenaries and you can have as many level 20 heroes as you are willing to pay for with whatever professions you want utilizing any skill in the game (including elites). All of this at whichever level the respective campaign grants access to heroes (for Nightfall it's like level 2). Combine that with the fact that the skill unlocks allow the player to learn any skill they want through skill tomes (including elites) without them having captured or learned them from a trainer on a previous character and the fact that they open up every non-elite skill of the respective campaign at any trainer in that campaign. Put this all together and you can pretty well trivialize PvE in Guild Wars if you are willing to spend the cash.

Consider that in order for a non-paying player to achieve these same things they would have to have played through the game and payed roughly 1 platinum for each skill they wished to unlock on their account (for use by heroes or new characters using tomes), of which there are over a thousand, as well as gone out and killed a boss for each elite skill they wished to unlock, of which there are 294.

Also, if you think about it, this is worse than selling gear, because it gives every character you make an advantage, not just one.

Dec 16th 2011 2:21AM I wish you would devote these articles to something that is actually relevant and helpful for people who are currently/interested in playing the game, rather than fodder for armchair "this is how I think it should be done" game design.

Nov 22nd 2011 11:40PM 7 million units sold in 5 days. MAN, WE BETTER PUT A STOP TO THOSE PIRATES!!!

God forbid the underprivileged people who could never afford the game to begin with actually get to enjoy it at no cost whatsoever to the developers. Digital content is the only place where piracy actually works since the rich subsidize the poor and everyone wins, yet they are crawling over their piles of money to put a stop to it.

Perfect World explains third quarter financial performance {Massively}

Nov 22nd 2011 1:00PM @Juicer

Allods and Runes of Magic are much worse than any Perfect World game when it comes to pay to win. Perfect World is actually one of the least offensive non-American companies on that front.
