Enter to celebrate patch 3.0.2 with a Paper Airplane from WoW Insider {WoW}

Oct 14th 2008 12:17PM The first thing I'll be doing is reworking my button and hot key interface to take advantage of the new fire mage talents.

Not at BlizzCon? Enter to win a Tabard of Flame anyway {WoW}

Oct 9th 2008 11:29AM An interesting idea for a contest. I like it! Hope I win too.

Wrath release date announced [confirmed, CE] {WoW}

Sep 15th 2008 8:06AM This release date doesn't make sense. All video games in the U.S. release on a Tuesday, and in Europe on a Wednesday. Maybe it's a release date for online orders or something.

Or maybe Blizzard got permission to do a middle of week release? Would be VERY unusual if they're planning to distribute in brick and mortar stores (and from the preorder pages, I assume they are.

Insider Trader: Faction recipes for enchanters {WoW}

Sep 12th 2008 1:53PM Another errata -- I got all excited when I saw that there might be an Enchant Chest - Subtlety, as you state in the article -- but your popup properly links to the Enchant Cloak - Subtlety for Thrallmar/Honor Hold.

The epic raid AFK {WoW}

Apr 27th 2008 9:49AM We were in our early 50s running Sunken Temple with a PUG of a bunch of people who wanted their blue 50 quest item. We got about halfway through, and our main tank told us he'd have to quit -- he just got a phone call that his brother was in jail and he had to go down and bail him out. The rest of us were like whoa, dude... what are you still here for? Get going. Though it would have been more interesting if he had just typed "AFK Bailing out brother" and hearthed.

Playing with your keyboard {WoW}

Mar 3rd 2008 1:06PM I play on my laptop when on biz travel and my desktop at home, so having a funky keyboard in only one location is not an attractive option.

Some people have mentioned using shift for hotkeys but no one's given any suggestions that I've seen. As a mage I love binding Blink to Shift+W (more forward), Iceblock to Shift+X (descending / turtling -- defensive), Counterspell to Shift+S (backing up -- defensive), and various other instant twitch spells (remove curse, frost nova, Dragon's breath or Cone of Cold) to A,D,Q,E.

Sharing this methodology across toons is really helpful as well. Offensive spell/ability for walk forward, defensive for walk backwards... even the number keys: my Shammy/Moonkin/Mage all have a short cast direct damage spell at 1, instant damage at 3, long cast at 4. Once something evolves and sticks in your head it's easy to refine it into something that won't differ too much from toon to toon (though my Warrior has to find equivalents of "short cast" and "long cast")

Breakfast topic: How young is too young for World of Warcraft? {WoW}

Feb 8th 2008 9:33AM Well, my 2 year old son loves watching me play "bawk bawk horsey" (his name for the game, ever since he first saw me on a mount doing the /chicken emote). We started with him watching me fly an alt back and forth on a small flight path, and he loved pointing out the mountains and snow, the hot lava, the trees, the water, and the castle. At almost 3 now he enjoys sitting on my lap and using the arrow keys to move my alt back and forth, off a ledge into the water, or to spin around in place. A friend of mine has a 5 year old who he lets wander around Stormwind, and before he knew it, the 5 year old had memorized the location of everything in the town (and found a way to buy a sword even after his dad had destroyed the one that came with the character).

I don't know at what age I'd be comfortable allowing him to play on his own, but I just wanted to say that it's surprising how much fun there is in WoW for toddlers learning to use their imagination to explore a world, and learning to use the mouse and keyboard.

Now, if I could just teach him how to fish, I'd be all set!
