No, PLAYERS need to get better at NOT GETTING HACKED! If you compromise your account info to someone else, it's NOT Blizz's fault. It's your own.

Try imagining Icecrown completely land mount accessable. It loses a lot of its impressiveness.

Blizzard's web infrastructure is about to get pounded by waves of people trying to upgrade their accounts as midnight hits. This is a very easy (although heavy-handed) way to reduce the load on their infrastructure.

The added bonus of the CMs being able to post on the forums when a bunch of the realms (inevitably) lag out and crash under the flood of people heading to northrend is probably going to come in handy as well.
