On lag and communication: Two interrelated issues {WoW}

Jan 23rd 2009 5:49PM Since we're RP'ing, these are actual conversations that occurred at Blizzard:

Morhaime: So, ghost, we all know that greater player retention leads to more revenue for the company. Any thoughts on how we can achieve this?
Ghostcrawler: I think more players need to experience end-game.
Morhaime: How do we do this?
Ghostcrawler: We make it easier. Kara was too tough for most players - the skele horses scared them away.
Morhaime: Great, let's do it!

Six months later...
Morhaime: So, why all of this hate mail about the server lag in end-game?
VP Engineering: That's because the instances cannot scale.
Ghostcrawler: Don't look at me, I'm a game designer.
Morhaime: What's this mean?
VP Engineering: There are too many players in end-game; we'll have to re-architect our systems to scale.
Morhaime: Isn't there something we can do right away?
VP Engineering: We can try adding more boxes to the cluster.
Morhaime: Won't this cost millions?
VP Ops: Yup.
VP Marketing: I got it - we can add banner ads to the forums - we should make enough money to pay for more servers.
Morhaime: Great, let's do it!

Home's virtual items rake in more than movies {Massively}

Dec 31st 2008 1:34PM Exactly, it's a press release. According to other insiders I've talked to, they aren't making much at all from virtual goods...

Northrend's Gross Domestic Product: 719 million gold {WoW}

Dec 24th 2008 1:44PM Every major virtual world (secondlife, imvu) and MMO (wow, eve, etc.) has at least one person (though their title might not be "economist") tracking & modeling virtual currency sinks, faucets, inflation, fraud, etc.

Linden Lab moves new Second Life Web-page into tentative production {Massively}

Dec 24th 2008 1:11PM When is massively going to show imvu some love? The service has arguably more users than SL, a larger UGC virtual catalog, and a lot of users who also play WoW.

Wowhead and Thottbot on ad strike {WoW}

May 6th 2008 6:07PM As a large advertiser (3D chat/virtual world) on both websites, I have mixed feelings on the subject. On one hand, we aren't able to run our ads - both sites bring in a decent amount of new users to our service. Yet, on the other hand, those shady sites squeeze me out of inventory (available ads), so if thott/wowhead eliminate them from the mix, that's good for us. Of course, some of you might ask, why not just buy directly from those sites? Well, the way the industry works - I hope the inventory doesn't sell, and that it falls through to the secondary market, known as remnant - which is cheaper and more affordable for me. Anyway, a business perspective probably isn't the most exciting to hear, but you will find me raiding or in BGs nightly on either my 70 loc or 70 mage on anvilmar.

The Daily Grind: Is Second Life the internet of the future? {Massively}

Feb 27th 2008 8:54PM IMVU is already larger than SL - do some research...
