What you say maybe true now, but in WOTLK a Ret Paladins will get spell power from AP. Also, if you didn't know spell power has double the effect of healing due to spells having their coefficients increased.
Mana efficiency won't be a problem because again from Judgment of the Wise.
A Retribution Paladin will be in range of receiving damage from a boss but then again a Ret Paladins main roll is to dps.
By just throwing 8 talent points into Holy a Retribution Paladins heals will hit nearly as hard as a deep Holy Paladin. It's not like the Ret Paladin has to swap out of his melee gear either. Weapon swapping will achieve the same amount of bonus healing, and weapon swapping can be done during combat.
The real benefit of a Holy Paladin is their ability to cast quicker heals, due to their new talents deep in Holy and their healing gear will likely have haste on it. Which they won't have because they put too many talent points in Retribution.
Shockadin was always a dead spec, but there's too many stupid people out there insisting that the spec works.
Aug 16th 2008 4:18PM Shockadins - A Paladin who wishes they could spec Retribution but is too much of a pussy, and is afraid that by actually being Retribution they might actually lose his online friends and guilds trust and acceptance.
The problem with the Shockadin spec is that Retribution can now seriously heal and still dps.
Given that Pre-WOTLK patch 3.0 doesn't change much too drastically, the average Retribution Paladin will have 2000 AP and 600 spell power. The average level 70 epic healing mace and shield will add about 500 spell power but lower the Paladins spell power from Sheath of Light by 50-100, due to the missing AP from the melee weapon.
That means the average Retribution Paladin with the above macro could have 1000 spell power which is the same as today's 2000 + healing.
With the above spec a Retribution could heal as well as a Holy Paladin with the bellow spec.
The worst part is that no Paladin is going to spec for Kings besides Protection and even they might not even wanna waste the points.
Thanks to Judgment of the Wise a Retribution Paladin will never run out of mana so long as there's someone to use a Judgment on. It's so good that a lot of Holy Paladin might even sacrifice more Holy talents just to get this talent in Retribution.
Either Beacon of Light needs a huge buff or Sheath of Light and Judgment of Wise need to be moved deeper down Retribution.

Jun 2nd 2008 1:37PM The classes that suffer right now are Shamans, Paladins, Mages, and Hunters. Each of these classes have their own idea of what would fix PvP for them.
Lately Rogues have been climbing fast in Arena. No Arena team is complete without a Rogue. Their survivability is absurd. Paladins were known for their survivability and now Rogues beat them at it.
Seriously Kalgan should just be fired. He's screwed up class balance throughout TBC and he's had a year to fix it.
Jun 1st 2008 2:37AM The problem isn't the hybrid Utility being group limited but the fact raids are limiting to melee in general. All too often are there bosses that suck for melee but are great for ranged.
You can afford to lose melee dps, but you can't afford to lose ranged. The typical raid setup is usually 1 melee group and 2 ranged groups. If you have 2 melee groups then the raid is sure to fail. Having 3 ranged groups is hardly ever a bad thing.
Gotta hope that WOTLK raids are melee friendly. Otherwise there's no point in making a Death Knight for doing melee dps.
