Know Your Lore: The curious dissonance of Alliance leveling {WoW}

Apr 1st 2012 9:19PM Loved this article...

I'm not a major lore buff but it seems that the theme of the entire alliance story is unfulfilling.

If you had to put a theme on the Horde story (say if it was a book) I think it'd be a theme of triumph against the odds. It feels as though they're heading for a final triumphant victory against the forces both internal and external that want to tear them apart.

What is the theme of the alliance's story? It seems like we are the (presented) "good" side but a bit of the everyman. We make the good villian, and it seems as though its ok to **** on us because Stormwind is still there. It feels like we are the UFP. We get screwed at every turn, while trying to help everyone. We're the UFP fighting the Borg. We've been giving ground for 7 or 8 years. Where's our come-uppance?

MoP you say? Forgive me but here's how it sounds. The Garrosh led Horde destroy Theramore. Butthurt alliance fights back blah blah, eventually the HORDE decided this Garrosh guy is kinda a nutbag, get FotM Thrall back and boot his arse to Deepholm with Alliance help....Yay Horde. But Hang on...the Alliance still have to sit back and take the loss of another city without guessed it. Come-uppance.

Sometime the alliance need to win a major, lasting victory for themselves alone, in their own right. They need to take something back and not just be a tool to the Horde's internal coup. They need to be shown what it is to be a member of the alliance (other than a 12 year old in their mothers basement.) and given some faction pride, and moreso, a decent reason to feel and show that pride.

The current theme of the Alliance story feels like it is the Vietnam war. It'll end...but you and I won't feel particularly great about any of it. We won't have won, but we won't have lost either. It feels as though our end-state will be to just go on existing. That isn't the kind of story that is satisfying to finish.

I hope that makes sense to some of you.

Ol' Grumpy and the return of class-based quests {WoW}

Jan 26th 2012 5:45PM The Quel'Delar quest line was my favourite of the game. It's no surprise that the best quest lines aren't the "phat lewt" ones, they are the most meaningful ones; the ones that draw the player into the story, something that for me, is too few and far between in WoW.

The class quests do this for everyone. It makes you buy into your role, understand your motivations and backstory, and possibly teach you new things about your class (if not its a great mechanism to do so in the future). Wicth homogenisation, the only seperating one class form another is mechanics. Quests give that lore that each person needs.

The rogue quests rocked. As soon as you were in Westfall you had to sneak into the tower and steal that poison to get that ability. It makes you feel like you earned your abilities, and gave depth. The priest quest in EPL (I think you have to heal fleeing people from Strath while they run from plague monsters) bloody rocked. You had to manage triage using various heals to finish it sucessfully.

Removing them was a mistake, and hopefully they will be brought back sooner rather than later. SWTOR has shown the viability of the method.

How could tanking design be changed? {WoW}

Jan 11th 2012 3:28PM They should make tanking like dance dance revolution or whatever game like that...You can see the boss move ahead of time scrolling down the page and you have to hit your active mitigation at the right time or splat/take big damage. Or something like that anyway. Less RNG

Gold Capped: The fastest way to make 10,000 gold {WoW}

Jan 6th 2012 6:08PM I agree. All that was missing was the "Want a mailbox stuffed with gold like me? Go to my gold making guide @ x url for the low low price of $29.95"

I'd rather hear from that chick in Europe who rakes it in...Can't rmeber the name or server but her record is 500k in a week and that was back a ways.

Breakfast Topic: What class would you bring to WoW? {WoW}

Oct 31st 2011 12:59AM I really like the idea of turning Engineering into a class, perhaps called a Tinker or something else.

I also really like the idea of giving each class another spec. Rogue dodge-tank please!

Theres no other class idea I really gravitate too other than engineer, most of the others seem too shallow or too similar to the current classes.

I suppose one option would be to make something like a hero-class of each normal class that had improved benefits, but that'd be a mssive pain tio implement and balance, and we'd be essentially forced to go into these. For example:

Priest -> Cleric
Hunter -> Ranger
Mage -> Sorcerer
Druid -> Archdruid etc.

Blizzard introduces tradable "Guardian Cub" companion pet, purchasable through the Blizzard Store {WoW}

Oct 10th 2011 4:27PM In game gold doesn't equal extra real world profit.

Blizzard introduces tradable "Guardian Cub" companion pet, purchasable through the Blizzard Store {WoW}

Oct 10th 2011 4:25PM I was going to ramble on about how now wealthier players can buy advantages in the game but this was always the case with buying pets/mounts etc. But yeah, this is really just Blizz seeing if a micro-transaction model will work to snuff out gold-sellers. However, I am really bothered by the scenario in my head that goes something like "buy 10, sell them all for 10k each, w00t now I have 100k gold to buy in-game gear upgrades and such", essentially allowing a player to buy themselves better, without in-game effort, something Blizzard had always said they wouldn't do (as an explanation as to why they kept the real-world purchases to pets and vanity items only).

Breakfast Topic: What holiday does Azeroth still need? {WoW}

Sep 28th 2011 5:32PM The oceanic servers should have ANZAC day celebrations. Quests could involve helping veterans in the cities or something.

Breakfast Topic: A message to someone who's left a lasting impression {WoW}

Sep 5th 2011 1:21AM I have a few people who stand out.

Capachino, she found me wandering aimlessly lost in Darkshore on Jubei'Thos (US Oceanic) as a fresh noob Nelf Rogue, and showed me the ropes, then brought me over to her main server (Dethecus-US) where I got involved with her guild as they raided through Vanilla content. Listening to her and her friend as they entered Zangarmarsh for the first time was amazing, but soon after the guild disbanded and I left for another Oceanic server (I'm an aussie so the time difference sucked).

After a short stint in a guild called Asylum, run by a really friendly bf/gf couple, I found a home on Nagrand-US, where I remain to this day.

The main person I want to mention is Lilianne, of Nagrand. It struck me how good she was when I realised that I had seperately friended her on 3 of my characters because she had volunteered time and help to me on each one. I know she was generally willing to offer a hand to anyone in need. More than once she helped me with a quest I couldn't finish on my own while she was just in transit over the zone I was in.

She just really embodies everything a good WoW player represents to me and it pleases me to know that good people are still out there amongst the noobs and trolls. ANd I just think she deserves some thanks for it all.

Is it time to kill tanking? {WoW}

Aug 26th 2011 1:01AM I'd also love to see scaling instances. The content would simply scale to meet the number of players you have available. Hell ideally, it could see you have 3 dps and 2 healers, and make the instance based on composition as well.

Work necessary = CRAPTONS!
