How many wipes does it take to end a raid? {WoW}

Nov 23rd 2009 1:06AM We already have an answer to this from Blizzard.
Based on their Ice Crown raid throttling rules, 5 wipes and we are done.

Icecrown raid access progression {WoW}

It is also a reasonable interpretation to say Blizzard is distracted by other things and/or

Either way, the best guilds will still have time and space to prove they are the best guilds.

You know it if you are in one of those guilds, and those of us who are not know it too.

Unless you think you are a fraud, there is no reason to feel threatened by what Blizzard is doing.

It is Blizzard's right to enhance the value of their product by throttling its availability and making it seem more scarce that it actually is.

That is what diamond companies like DeBeers do.

Blizzard: Arenas were a mistake. {WoW}

Nov 13th 2009 8:08PM Remove arena now, or at least with Cataclysm.

Here is a fact, which Pardo is acknowledging with these comments:

Arena is a loss-leader for Blizzard. Yes, it brings people to the game and gets attention,
but it is a HUGE resource suck in that it requires thousands of man hours to balance the game around arena, and is therefore no longer worth supporting from a financial perspective.

The fact is, they probably have looked, and arenas generate a small percentage of subscription revenue, and are no longer financially viable in their current state.

Benefit of arena maintenance - cost of balancing the game and employing a balance team, not to mention all the bs the company has to deal with from Arena players = arenas
really aren't worth the headache.

They could spin it off to a separate product or portion it off by redesigning coefficients, etc. as was mentioned earlier.

As someone who has complained about arenas holding this game hostage for years, the taste of vindication is sweet, indeed!

Bottom Line: Blizzard is married to PVE and PVP is its mistress. When push comes to shove, which it has, the mistress is gonna be out on her a**.

Malware targeting gamers gets some mainstream spotlight {WoW}

Nov 5th 2009 8:09PM Wow, people over 40, welcome to the 21st century.

I wonder if the BBC just heard of this thing called Malware and think this is cutting edge reporting...

"You mean I shouldn't click that 'Get larg3r in herr tonigh7!' email?!?"

I am filing this under "no duh"...

Nothing to see here.

In relevant news, South Park is hilarious this season.

A WoW player's guide to microtransactions {WoW}

Nov 5th 2009 8:02PM We are not even at the pile-of-stick-and-lighter-stage.

Blizzard is buying gasoline, and chicken littles assume it is to burn the world
to the ground, rather than put it in their car, or light a bonfire to throw a kick ass party, etc...

They are selling 2 specific pets for $10 each. That is a fact. Anything else we say about it is at best a likely story, and at worst, total nonsense.

Kalu'ak Fishing Derby details {WoW}

Oct 27th 2009 1:13AM The lag will be the least of your worries.

People with an additional Dalaran hearth will have a tremendous,
game-breaking advantage if the "contest" goes live as described.

If you have the ring, or a second hearth, you will be at a huge advantage over those who do not:

1) Set your hearth to an inn next to your favorite Pygmy Suckerfish infested spot.
2) Get quest from npc in Dalaran.
3) Hearth to your fishin' hole.
4) Catch Black Tip Shark
5) Hearth to Dalaran

Blizzard, if you are going to make events with rewards people want, please apply
some critical thinking to their execution. Don't let this go live.

Almost no one without a second hearth will ever win this contest as designed.

Ghostcrawler to take a break from the forums {WoW}

Sep 26th 2009 9:35PM Inevitable and overdue, in my opinion.

GC provided an invaluable service to people who are objective and open-minded about
the product we are consuming.

However, if you have spent more than 5 minutes on
the forums, you quickly notice people are waaay too attached to their own point of view for reasoning with the forums to make any difference.

I found the transparency and forthrightness in his posts refreshing and fun.

For however long he takes a break, he will be missed.

This is what happens when you show people how the sausage gets made...
