The Light and How to Swing It: Healing is a zero-sum game {WoW}

Aug 29th 2011 11:13AM Restro druid here. Also, my profession is an analyst for a corporation - my role is to find appropriate and accurate performance metrics.

HPS is an inappropriate metric of individual healer performance, for the many reasons already outlined. And yes, I understand that it's my class topping the charts. Doesn't matter a lick.

The healing teams job is, as the author notes, to provide a buffer between damage and death. HPS can be increased by tunnelling DPS standing in fire, tanks not using their mitigation/avoidance cooldowns, etc. These are bad moves for the raid, but they make the healing meters look better. However, excellent awareness and survivability by all raid members will minimize the healing down, aka make the HPS meters look bad.

Furthermore, as has been pointed out by other posters, while druids do well on HPS meters because of HoTs, we are poor at reacting to damage spikes or providing mitigation. If an awesome priest or pally saves a guy on the verge of death that I had no hope of saving, then my helm slot is off to him, even if I top the charts, because he did his job and he did it well.

As a hockey metaphor - the goalie might not look as good if the defense is preventing the opposing team from taking a lot of shots on goal, but that doesn't mean the goalie isn't important. It just means the defense is doing its job. In this case....the resto druid is the defense, using HoT's to minimize emergency saves, and the other healers might be the goalie - making that awesome save when it's needed. In the NHL - goalies are still properly regarded as studs.

If a boss lies dead at the feet of the raid, you can look at DPS meters and get a general idea of contribution. (Although interrupts, add CC, etc, mean that even DPS meters aren't a comprehensive measurement of performance - they are only an indicator.) But you can't measure how well the healers or for that matter the tanks did their job...all you know is that they did well enough for the group to succeed.

TL:DR - HPS is a stupid measurement - even resto druids think so.

Breakfast Topic: What's the next big change? {WoW}

Aug 23rd 2011 11:22AM Raid content that is two expansions old or older (so Wrath, BC and Vanilla when the new expansion launches) should be accessible without joining a raid group. If I want to try and solo Black Temple or Molten Core on my lvl 85 just to see what it was like or farm transmog items, I shouldn't have to jump through artificial hoops.

I've only seen a small amount of pre-Cata raid content, and given this feature I would solo ALL of it at least once, just to see the storyline.

Then again, it may be their intent that transmog items be reserved for those who achieved the content when it was relevant?

Does the Rise of the Zandalari dungeon tier serve a purpose? {WoW}

Aug 22nd 2011 2:48PM I just don't think there is a problem here to be solved. The heroics are working fine, and ZA/ZG are more difficult but more rewarding. I would like to see more options for dungeons in the ZA/ZG tier, but at the same time, when the new dungeons come out, I hope they AREN'T batched with ZA/ZG, because I will want to see the new content. Maybe about halfway through 4.3 they can merge them.

Drama Mamas: Namecalling {WoW}

Aug 22nd 2011 11:28AM I'm sure this will get downvoted, but the reality is that the other characters ARE just cogs in the machine in RDF. You don't know them, you'll probably never see them again. Look, the reality is that people are really mean to each other in RDF. People jump all over each other for any mistake, refuse to take accountability for their own. Tanks go charging off at top speed, never giving anyone time to loot or even breathe for a second, and if tanks don't do this, DPS jump all over them for being too slow. Everyone is expected to know every fight, but everyone just wants to get carried. And there is no tolerance for being new on my time.

It's unfortunate and it sucks.

All that being said, for me, the bar is set so low for RDF, that I'm happy if no one uses any racist, homophobic or misogynistic slurs and people just do their jobs. I'll tolerate being called "healz" if no one calls anyone "ghay".

Drama Mamas: My guildie is a registered sex offender {WoW}

Aug 15th 2011 6:10PM There's underground and there's underground. A registered sex offender has every right to play WoW, unless the terms of his parole say otherwise. But revealing that he (or she - about 4-5% of the list are women) is a registered sex offender is unnecessary and is only going to create unnecessary drama.

Drama Mamas: My guildie is a registered sex offender {WoW}

Aug 15th 2011 2:20PM Lets assume a best case scenario - the offender in question had sex with a prostitue, or was an 18 y/o boy who had sex with a 17 y/0 fm, or was a guy whose swim trunks split in a public pool, or something of that nature. He's still dumb enough to post a phone number that identifies him as someone who shares a list with some of the worst of society.

Does this action really indicate he's someone you trust to be healing you, tanking for you or DPSing for you? Not really. GM should have simply gkicked him, with an apologetic note and advice to change servers and names, and not mention it in his next guild.

Breakfast Topic: Are you there to down the boss or top the meter? {WoW}

Aug 15th 2011 10:20AM Just remember - pulling 8K DPS and topping the charts does NOT make you better than the guy in the other group who pulled 11K DPS and came in dead last.

Breakfast Topic: Design your own level 90 spell or ability {WoW}

Aug 10th 2011 2:56PM Druids, AND ONLY DRUIDS, should be able to shift between talent specs and equipment setups even in mid fight. It would be awesome if a balance druid could suddenly shift to bear spec if the tank dies, or a kitty could back up and go resto at need. But only druids should have this versatility, as it's thematically appropriate for the class.

Breakfast Topic: How do you deal with self-entitled puggers? {WoW}

Aug 9th 2011 10:40AM Most has been covered, but what really annoys me is when tanks and DPS start sending me whispers to NOT heal a party member. Look, if they are bothering you, that's your problem. Healing is my job, and I'll make the decision when not to heal someone. Which, by the way, for me is right around never. If they are so unpleasant that I would let them die, I would rather vote kick, and failing that, leave the group. But withholding heals is the healer's call.

No, you don't get to order me to enforce your "punishment" of whoever you don't like.

Review: Healbot now available for your iPad or iPhone {WoW}

Jul 28th 2011 10:37AM I can't wait for my next heroic Stonecore. The tank fails on Ozruk, everyone dies, and I see this:

"Stupid noob ha3lz! I am teh win on iPh0n3...wy you suuuuuck???"

You have been removed from group.
