WoW.com welcomes new warlock and elemental shaman columnists {WoW}

Jul 9th 2010 11:30AM Very excited to finally have an Elemental Shaman presence. Thank you!

Breakfast Topic: How much of your played time is really played? {WoW}

Jul 9th 2010 9:09AM I guess I've just always thought of it as regardless of what I am doing I am playing with the only exception being if I am /afk and even then there are times I would say I'm still playing. If I'm in game and working on a quest and need some info so I pop over to a helpful website I might be out of the game for 5mins so my toon goes /afk but to me I am doing something that is part of my play time. I guess I'm not hard core enough to think that just doing dailies doesn't count.

Customizing and opting out of Real ID {WoW}

Jul 8th 2010 12:39PM For all the people saying "If you don't like it just don't post in the forums and there's no problem" you are way over simplifying the issue here. Even if we just take the forum part of the bigger picture what do you say to the person who is having a technical issue with the game and is instructed by Blizzard to post something on the Technical Support Forum. This now becomes a necessary thing in order to be able to get your issue resolved thus allowing you to continue playing the game you are paying to use. Now if you look at the even bigger picture which is in my opinion the direction that ActiBliz is heading down I highly doubt that the RealID issue will simply stop at Forums. This will be incorporated at some point into every outside the game function that they currently support such as things like The Armory. Now sure you can say well just don't go to The Armory but that doesn't fix the problem since anyone can search for your character regardless of whether or not you want them to. There is no opt-in/opt-out function of the armory you are just in regardless.

Around Azeroth: An elsewhere to be {WoW}

Jul 8th 2010 11:26AM Since I'm not in the Beta I was wondering if anyone could tell me where in game the background pictured actually is regardless of how much it may or may not resemble a real world place. Would just be nice to be able to put it into game context. Thanks and sorry if someone already said and I missed it.

Customizing and opting out of Real ID {WoW}

Jul 8th 2010 11:19AM Nadia, thank you for answering my question, that was very helpful. It seems to me that of the people that claim to be in favor of this decision their prevailing argument is "Well you probably have all that info on Facebook already so what's the difference", not a direct quote just paraphrasing here. To me there is a huge difference. Facebook is a free application so their only way of making money is by selling advertising, I am paying for my usage of WoW already. Secondly Facebook allows at least some degree of opt-in/opt-out with 98% of the features on the site. Could they do a better job of it of course but at least they give us the option to say I only want friends to see xyz. In addition I do not see how the official WoW forums even compare to the idea of a social network. While some people I'm sure go to the forums to chat with friends there are far easier and better ways of doing that already, to me the forums are a place for information about the game not about other people.
My account is currently not active because when my last pre-paid 60day card expired we were expecting a child and I knew I wouldn't have much time to play. I was all set to buy a new card and had decided to spend the money to transfer 3 of my toons to a new server. Thanks to this RealID thing I've decided to just leave my account inactive instead. Not that Bliz will notice the loss of revenue or because I was a heavy user of the Forums, but because I worry about what will be next. I can see it moving to things like the Armory very soon where you have no choice to just not participate.

Customizing and opting out of Real ID {WoW}

Jul 8th 2010 10:47AM Can someone who's done this answer my question regarding which name is the one that shows up if RealID is turned on with parental controls, is it the parents name, the child's name, or can you select the one you want to show up? Again my thinking here is that if I can enter a fake child name and have that show up then I could still post in the forums if the need came up as in tech support without giving away my real identity. I'm guessing it is set up to not show the child name but figured it was worth asking.

Customizing and opting out of Real ID {WoW}

Jul 8th 2010 10:01AM So if I enable parental controls on my account and put in a made up name for the "child" can I set it so that it displays that name instead of the parent name? If so then I could still make up a fake name and post on the forums anonymously without having to go through the hassle and expense of creating a new account and then paying to transfer all of my toons to that account or just stop playing all together.

Jul 6th 2010 2:26PM Adding to my original post I am also concerned that people will use this to flame in game by flooding trade chat by "outing" people. While that wouldn't be bad when someone is a ninja it can have far too many in my opinion negative uses as well.

Jul 6th 2010 2:23PM To all those who say that people are being ridiculous for thinking future employers care about what you post online or that they don't really Google you before making a hiring decision. I started a new job about 3 weeks ago. After getting hired while having a friendly chat with my new boss and he mentioned that they had done a Google search on one of the other finalist for the job and found that he was very active in working on add-ons and other WoW related things and it was one of the factors they used in deciding to not hire him (though I'm honestly not sure what their specific concern was). It worked in my favor but if they had only known at the time that I have been active on the forums etc it would have affected me just as much.
