More on Blizzard's new Arena system {WoW}

Feb 1st 2009 7:39PM @Zach - Wow, that makes perfect sense now that you pointed it out. I bet I can finish my post with this information in mind.

Pretty much what Roland said. We decided to ride it out and see what would happen over a bunch of games (I think we stopped after 35 or so). Every win resulted in a gain of less than 8 points, but most commonly less than 4. Every loss resulted in losing 20 or more points - commonly more than 24 (which was supposed to be the cap).

We started at a fresh 1500, and ended in the 1200s, with an overall winning streak! I put in a ticket and the response I was given was, of course, "working as intended".

Feb 1st 2009 4:13PM OK, apparently comments are broken right now, nevermind all that.

Feb 1st 2009 4:06PM According to a blue post, losses and gains were supposedly capped at 24, and most wins should result in gains of ~12 points. I got pretty excited when I read that it was "fixed", so yesterday I restarted my 2v2 team at 1500.

Our first loss? -28 points. Our first win? +1 point. We decided to just ride it out and see what would happen, and the trend continued, with wins resulting in

Totem Talk: Back to Enhancement {WoW}

Jan 30th 2009 7:31PM I'm not sure I understand the static shock hype. I tried it out, and even with 3/3 Improved Shields and 3/3 Static Shock it was accounting for less than 3% of my overall damage.

Not only that, but the tradeoffs I made to max both talents meant I was gimped in other places, and my overall output was much lower. With 0/3 Improved Shields and 3/3 Static Shock, it accounted for less than 2% of my overall damage, and my overall output was still lower, even though I wasn't trading points to max out Improved Shields.

It's great that it's free passive damage (well, a GCD every few minutes), but even if you don't need the mana from Water Shield it just doesn't seem to be worth it.

Checking in on Free Realms pt. 2 {Massively}

Jan 27th 2009 12:22PM Why would anyone call this a "WoW-killer"? Honestly, it looks like it's for the 4-12 age group, and of course the ultra-casuals. That's nice if it's free, but clearly millions of people don't mind paying for other MMOs. As far as an MMO for kids, that's great, but we already have MapleStory and the like. I guess time will tell where this MMO will fit in the full spectrum.

Realms now online after emergency maintenance {WoW}

Jan 23rd 2009 1:29PM Arenas are still fubar. With a fresh 1500 team, we will lose 20-24 points to a clearly better geared, higher rated team, or for that matter against any team we've fought so far. Having beat the same team, we gained only 7 points. Also, player movement looks incredibly sluggish and choppy in arenas.

45 minute time limit for all arena matches {WoW}

Jan 13th 2009 4:21PM Also, it was more like 10-15 minutes at most, definitely not 45. I wouldn't waste that much of my own time even for comedy.

Jan 13th 2009 4:19PM First of all, a hunter, mage and warlock beating a paladin with their fists is pretty funny in my book.

IIRC, we did it because it was another team from our own guild. After it ended, the last man standing (a paladin), admitted he thought it was hilarious, which is why he kept sitting down and emoting and keeping himself healed when he could rather than letting us kill him.

The rest of the group was upset, but it's not my fault they couldn't convice him to AFK out.

Yet another extended maintenance extension {WoW}

Dec 23rd 2008 2:58PM > Why does Blizzard think that this very common practice in IT doesn't apply to them?

Because millions of people will continue to pay anyway. It's sad but true.

I've always wished Blizzard would give us more of a hands-on explanation of what's actually happening. Hell, I'm sure they could afford to pay someone $10/hour to follow people around and blog about hardware upgrades, database maintenance and so on. I think we'd all be surprised how many people would be interested in that.
