Jun 30th 2009 5:44PM This is a terrible, terrible idea. Rolling an alt is not hard. We don't need people "metamorphosing" their level capped toons.
Some decisions should be permanent. Your character is who he or she is. If WoW keeps going down this road, it's going to have all of the challenge of Free Realms. Next patch is going to introduce Pokemon pets, Zanpaktou loot and a Jonas Brothers instance.
Jun 14th 2009 12:49AM Way more than 4 MMOs have closed down over the years. You can start counting with Meridian 59 and NWN Classic.
Jun 14th 2009 12:43AM These guys aren't stupid. The new timeline is for kids growing up now. The core fan base for this MMO are going to be generations who grew up with both the old movies and, most importantly, TNG (and its spinoffs.) We want the real, canonical Trek universe, not something set in the new dumbed down and shined up Tiger Beat Time Travel Trek.
New Trek has all the quality and gravitas of New Star Wars. Both of which are their franchises' respective New Coke.
Jun 14th 2009 12:30AM I'm glad you mentioned all that, especially that bit about the last boss--which also has its parallels in WoW -- like tranq shot before it was reworked. ( A skill you have to have for a single scripted encounter.)
Now that that's out of the way, I can instead bring you this unmitigated awesomeness:
MEGAMAN CHOCOLATE RAIN
Jun 12th 2009 9:28AM Meant to throw in this link to the old NWN at the top of the post (mentioned way above):
So, to clarify, it's odd that we don't have an MMO set in Krynn or Toril *today*. The demise of classic NWN is still something of a mystery--TSR/SSI were negotiating with AOL to expand it--but it was certainly in the Forgotten Realms and it held 500 players when it was cancelled. (Original capacity was 200.)
Jun 12th 2009 9:23AM Did you just call Champions of Krynn bad?
And there was a Forgotten Realms MMO (kind of). It was called Neverwinter Nights, based on the same Gold Box platform, and it was accessible only through AOL.
Jun 12th 2009 9:16AM Granted, it is odd that there hasn't been an MMO set in Toril or Krynn. Maybe those worlds are too encumbered by a boatload of writers' royalty contracts or something.
But, here's what I'd like to see:
Set in the battle for the Inner Sphere. (Save the clan invasion for an x-pac.) With ground combat (suited infantry and mechs) air combat (LAMs and aircraft) and space combat (fighters, warships, dropships). Fairly realistic cockpits and weapons, take the combat systems directly from battletech and adapt the character advancement and skill systems from mechwarrior. Include a dynamic world like the one in EVE, such that planets can be taken and lost by various player guilds (mercenary companies) in service to the major powers.
The groundwork was laid in multiplayer Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries. But the all the FASA IP is locked up in some kind of legal limbo last I heard.
A really well done and realistic persistent modern war MMO featuring RvR would work too. Maybe a civil war set in an island archipelago. Modeled after multiplayer wargames, but with more of a 'sim' feel to it (i.e. more like [OFP/ArmA + Falcon 4 + Silent Hunter] than [Battlefield + Battlestations].)
re: Shadowrun -- would need to be first edition not to suck. And, again, FASA IP is problematic. Plus, I'm not sure how excited devs would be to have to design two game worlds in parallel--the "real world" and the matrix--especially when only one class can access the matrix (deckers.)
I once would have called for a World of Darkness MMO. But White Wolf has completely destroyed the integrity of their games. The new versions are just terribad.

TOO SOON EXECUTUS
Jun 11th 2009 11:00AM Perhaps Blizzard can find an EU concern to sponsor the Battle Bots for EU players (with a slightly different name and perhaps a slightly modified texture.) Given that Mountain Dew's arrangement with Blizzard is US only, Blizzard may be free to put a different promo together for euro players. Red Bull, perhaps? They're world wide.
