Profanity filters, homophobic slurs, and Blizzard's shaky relationship with the LGBT community {WoW}

Jan 25th 2012 9:45AM "You know, someone always pipes up with this information whenever the words "fag" and "faggot" are being discussed and I have to ask you this: "When have you ever heard the words used in the way you are describing them?"

Those words are pretty much NEVER used for their proper, original English definition."

Faggot I'll give you but yeah, fag as in cigarette is still very commonly used by the British, heck I use it for that definition all the time. Like others have said though, it's very easy to tell by context what people mean, i.e. when I say "alright guys, we'll take 5 for a fag break" and when someone else says "God, that tank is such a fag" I think it's pretty clear which is offensive and which isn't.

"The origins of utterances matter little in the context of the present day."

This is one of the interesting things about the current usage of the word 'gay' whilst large sections of people who use the word do so to also insult the LGBT community, a lot of them don't and merely use it as another word for 'bad' because they see it used so commonly by their peers and communities, without meaning any insult to anyone. This is one of the things that makes fighting its use so difficult, if someone is using the word in a way that they don't think of as being offensive to the LGBT but then get attacked for their use of the word, it often leads to resentment and annoyance.

Jan 7th 2012 8:24AM I'm male but when there's an option I pretty much always make my characters female. I don't really know why, I imagine there's a whole host of reasons and I'm sure some people would love to examine what exactly it is but all I really know is it's what I enjoy doing.

Big stakes and the end of an expansion {WoW}

Dec 28th 2011 6:05PM I really wish people would stop talking about the WoW fanbase like we're meant to be one giant hive mind.

'In TBC everyone said they wanted X instead of Y, but in Wrath they gave you X and you said you wanted Y instead of X, make up your mind'

10 million players, 10 million opinions. If 1000's of people say one thing and then 1000's of people say the opposite, that does not mean they're being argumentative, or have changed their minds, or just want to moan, the most likely thing is we're talking about two small groups of the millions of people who play this game.

Dec 28th 2011 1:39PM Visually a lot of the fights have been impressive but tactics wide I think quite a few of the fights leave a lot to be desired, the biggest offender being Madness itself. I'm used to end of raid bosses being big multiple tactics events, the usual being 3 phases with 2 mid phase moments. Madness though is just two phases, the first consisting of "do the same ~3 minute fight over and over again with increasing difficulty" I didn't like this design because it just made the whole fight incredibly repetitive, we spend a couple nights trying to get pass the third and fourth tentacle but that meant having to do the same first two bits again and again and again, I've never been so bored taking down a end of raid (let alone end of expansion) boss.

Dec 25th 2011 4:02PM Remember when casual players used to complain, and say "I can't see end game content" and hardcore players would respond "Sure you can, everyone can, just join a guild, put the time in and earn the content" totally ignoring that some people don't have the time, or inclination or patience to do that and it was basically a worthless response.

I think "Blizzard isn't putting a gun to your head to force you to do LFR" is the equivalent reversal of that response. Sure Raiders could ignore LFR completely to keep the surprise and impact of killing DW with their raid, but that ignores the nature of Raiders, which is they will clear content, they will do what they can for gear upgrades and that it might even be expected of them to keep a place in their guild.

What the solution to these competing interests is, probably that Raiders have to suck it up, but saying "you don't have to do LFR" isn't a useful answer to anything really.

Dec 22nd 2011 1:33PM Friday should be a christmas song since it brings people together and unites them in a single cause.

You want proof, just look at the thread it was posted in, the entire first page of comments are all blue, that's rare, sometimes you get a lot of blue ones but a dark or neutral comment usually slips in, but not for Friday, we were all completely united in our hatred of that song (until you get to page 2 at least).

Dec 21st 2011 6:45PM The thing about races is that people seem to really get set on the idea that their appearance is set in stone, Blizzard could always modify certain races to make them more suitable for a playable character. I.e. with Naga they could have a slightly move evolved form with legs and a long slithering tail, so they keep the reptilian look but grow some legs (hey, if Ragnaros can do it why not Naga).

As for Ethereals again you could have some offshoot from the usual version we're used to dealing with that are just a bit more defined, think like the ghosts from Skyrim, when they put on armor it could be given a glow effect like shadowform but in their colour (i.e. blues, greens, oranges, etc). Being partially see through and glowing they'd still be quite ethereal whilst also being creatures with enough options to be changed.

of course Blizz may just steer clear of ideas like these because changing anything just opens to flood gates to people hurling abuse at them.

Dec 20th 2011 2:28PM To be fair, all three specs of Shamans have received buffs since paragon made that statement, especially Enhancement and their AOE finally letting them be competitive.
