Jan 24th 2011 8:52PM They could have shoe-horned 10 levels into the content they released easily enough, methinks.
It would've even come with some benefits given how large the power scale is from 80-85, but it also would've come down with a fair number of negatives as I pointed out in my post. Mainly though, it would either be an increased rate of leveling which would have felt completely off, or we would've lost even more choice in what we could do.
The zones themselves are quite linear in terms of quest flow; but we do at least have some options in which zones to do. If they didn't want to make each of the 10 Cata levels feel trivial, they could've forced us into doing everything up to the end of the Twilight Highlands, but then what little choice we had left would've been taken in the bargain.
So, my conclusion was that 5 levels was probably the right call; despite the attendant issues.
As an aside from all that, Thank-you Anne for including me this week. Was a (very pleasant) surprise.
I do hope everyone enjoys the reads on the topic and clicks through to the Blog Azeroth topic to see some of the other takes; I have to admit this probably wasn't really my best post in the world and had I known it'd end up here likely would've done a bit more with it.
But hind sight is 20/20 and all that, I suppose. :) Hope people enjoy it nonetheless.
Jan 17th 2011 11:55PM Got a couple of bits and pieces up recently on Fun in Games that may be of interest, a two-parter on Cataclysm raiding, first part being a general over view, and the second part (here: http://funingames.net/2011/01/raiding-in-cataclysm-part-2-what-makes-an-encounter-click/) querying why people think it is that an encounter can start feeling almost impossible, but after really quite limited exposure, leaps to 'easy' status.
It happens faster than gear alone can account for, it would seem, and has been especially notable in Cataclysm.
The other I think people might be interested in is an in-progress series on setting up a UI and control scheme from scratch for WoW.
Part 1 - Introduction:http://funingames.net/2011/01/building-your-ui-part-1-introduction/
Part 2 - First Addon, Keybinds and Mouse-over Macros: http://funingames.net/2011/01/building-your-ui-part-2-installing-first-addon-keybinds-mouse-over-macros/
Next part is going to go over getting the core of the UI setup and looking neat if not super nice. Part 4 will be about sprucing it up somewhat. Part 5 will come after 4.0.6 hits and detail how to handle a game update.
That's the plan at this point, in any case. It may end up being that Part 3 needs to be split, I'm unsure yet.
In any case, hope it's of interest / use to someone! :)
Dec 1st 2010 6:14PM Well, suffice to say, I can certainly see why they've been reluctant to release a video. :/
Oct 23rd 2010 6:41PM Hah. I'm unclear on whether Kalec has already recieved the promotion or will do so during the course of events in Cata though, but either way, that's a pretty neat move.
Granted the above was already spoiler, but the next bit should probably be warned so.. SPOILER INC, ALBEIT BASED ON SPECULATION, I BELIEVE SPECULATION I READ RIGHT HERE ON WoW INSIDER, BUT SOURCE NOW ELUDES MY MEMORY! SPOILER SPOILER!
If they actually make Thrall the aspect of Earth after assisting in taking out Deathwing, oh my goodness that would be amazing. Take that, Allies!
Oct 23rd 2010 6:08PM /swoon
I've been pining for an expansion dealing with the Emerald Dream ever since I was a green newb and wandered into the lair of one of the protector dragons in Ashenvale in Vanilla, then later on another character had the same experience in Darkshire, which lead to a 'wtf?' and then a wowwiki check.
Been my favourite part of the lore basically ever since.
I really hope it gets a full expansion treatment rather than just a patch, it really deserves it. I'm hoping that now with Malfurion awakened to help us deal with Deathwing, once that threat has passed he'll grant us some more insight into the nightmare and ask us to aid him and Ysera.
Oct 20th 2010 6:23PM This has got to be my favourite KYL.
The Kvaldir have always irked me for being so seemingly random and out of place. The mist never seemed to be adequately explained, nor did they really have any role in the game beyond 'Casting That Super Annoying Tsunami Copy' spell.
So finally gaining some insight into them and learning that perhaps they're NOT just a bunch of reskinned Vrykal with a half-baked reason for being placed there is really quite gratifying.
So, well done, and thank-you. Was a great read, and very well written to boot. :)
Oct 12th 2010 6:34PM Nnrgh. Rest of comment got eatened it seems.
Was going to say, I've been wanting to put the whole mp5 thing up on EJ for discussion ever since we spoke to see if could get the details hammered out, but didn't want to risk stealin the thunder from your post any. xD
Now that it's out though, will see if can get some minds smarter than mine to work out the new formula! If there is any success, will be sure to letcha know. :)
Oct 12th 2010 6:27PM Thanks for the mention, Joe!
Oct 7th 2010 3:26PM Have been informed should have directly linked to the blog rather than the article. Sorry!
It's not a terribly difficult conversion to make, but simply for the sake of convenience, direct link to the blog itself:
Oct 7th 2010 3:10PM Hi guys,
I've done a guide for Protection Warriors at 80 in 4.0.1/4.0.3, can take a squiz at:
There is also a video supplement to go with it which is linked in the guide itself, but if want to check it out directly can find it here:
Hope it is of some use to someone. :)
