The Daily Grind: Do MMOs belong in the mainstream? {Massively}

The Daily Grind: Do MMOs belong in the mainstream? {Massively}

Jul 29th 2010 10:48AM I'm just gonna say what we're all thinking. You're an idiot. I'm a 35-year-old gamer. Know what makes a gamer? I've been playing games since the Intellivision. Your criteria of determining a gamer based on forking over your allowance to BioWare doesn't make you look edgy. It makes you look stupid. If that was your goal, congrats. Mission accomplished.

Jul 29th 2010 10:04AM Just read your blog post. That pretty much sums it up for me too. I remember chatting about WoW with some former coworkers. It was a really eclectic bunch of guys. Some were geeks. Some were athletes. One was his high school prom king. But the one thing we all had in common was WoW.

Great post, by the way. I highly recommend it to all of the other readers here.

The Daily Grind: Do MMOs belong in the mainstream? {Massively}

Jul 29th 2010 8:29AM "After all, geeks are highly protective of their territory, often seeing themselves as the faithful guardians of That Which Society Rejected."

The term "elitist pricks" would have saved you a lot of words here. But not all geeks feel this way. The ones that do fail to understand that while mainstream success might drag along the dreaded "noobs," it also guarantees the long-term viability of a platform.

WoW players come in all shapes and sizes due to the way Blizzard has embraced mainstream cultural acceptance. And nearly six years later, players continue to be treated to new and engaging content.

I, for one, say let mainstream strip us of the stigma of basement-dwelling social lepers. There are some incredibly intelligent, funny, and outgoing people that I've met in my time playing MMO's. If more of them were highlighted instead of the elitist pricks, a lot of the negativity surrounding our culture would fade..

Breakfast Topic: What's your story? {WoW}

Jul 27th 2010 8:44AM I don't really have back stories for my toons, but I've always viewed my main as the "motherly" one of the group. I always have to make sure that she has more gold, achievements, titles, etc. than any of my alts. And whenever a new alt approaches 70 and receives a Tome of Cold Weather Flying and 5000G for epic flying, I always think, "these ungrateful punk kids have no idea what it was like to *walk* around Northrend for 10 levels."
