Jan 7th 2012 10:49PM Cutaia dropped some science, there. Drakken, I'd point out that the negative connotations of the term cross dresser are verysubjective (gay as well, but that's neither here nor there)
Put simply, western culture doesn't react all that negatively to cross-dressing. since the sixties, women's clothing lines have adopted traditionally male styles with pants becoming very normal as well as blouses resembling men's shirts. Similarly, fashionable men have been wearing women's label jeans and shirts for a while (hah! Justin Bieber joke!) Cross dressing men have been a staple of western comedy for ages, both in sketch comedy, as well as acts like Dame Edna and John Leguizamo, and of course there's the American schtick of Eddie Murphey and Tyler Perry among others. On top of that Drag Queens and kings are minor celebrities even in heteronormative culture, as evidenced by the popularity of performers like Ru Paul and the gender ambiguity craze of the 80s.
Addressing the other issue (I am not my character!) that I've seen a few posters raise, this is true, but you are also not your clothes. Cutaia points out that clothes have no gender beyond what we ascribe to them, but we (as a culture) hold those meanings important, typically presenting ourselves in gender-appropriate costumes.
In WoW our characters are our only costumes, designed with an eye towards representing gendered identities- none of the races are even a bit confusing with regards to gender. So when we play against gender we are making a very clear decision to play against the typical costuming behavior- being a female tauren isn't the same as wearing women's jeans and hoping no one notices, its wearing a bra and stuffing it, for the purposes of interacting with one community.
And, as evidenced by the norms of the community, there's nothing wrong with that. Personally, when I first started playing, as an EQ vet, I played female characters because of the preferable treatment I assumed I would receive (everquest was VERY different from WoW in that regard). As vent got popular I switched to male toons (the disconnect between voice and character threw me in other people, I didn't want to engender that). With wrath, though, the mental image of a female human DK really stuck with me, so my main is totally a crossdresser.
Jan 6th 2012 11:24AM Something about attuning themselves to arcane flows and their single-minded purpose. Instead of seeing as most mortals, they hone their mystical senses to see a world illuminated by fel influences, training that involves blinding themselves, iirc.
I believe the blood elf demon hunters in felmoon valley also wear blindfolds.
