Always skull a caster (or special case mobs that need dealing with early)
Battle Shout, Heroic throw (possibly a 2nd caster if there is one), charge skull, which mat get a Shield Bash to make sure it shifts. Thunderclap (I've given up on people waiting 2 secs for me to aoe before they go nuts). Then i'll be trying to get in a nice juicy Shield Slam on the skull, Shockwave the group to set them in a nice position and get in a Rend before the next TC. Then it's just tab around with your main rotation, Cleave spam, watch your cooldowns, see if you can interrupt or reflect as necessary.
I've ended up putting together a proper threat set with hit and expertise, using some of my dps gear. PuGs seem really bad at watching their aggro these days.
Apr 12th 2011 11:57AM I sse what you're saying. BR certainly enables ER, i don't think you'd call it a proc, as if something procs it is generally considered to be happening, or at least that's the way I read it, but that's just semantics.
As a quality of life improvement i'd really like to see BS/CS taken off the GCD at the moment as they do not give rage in the same way that I used to get from BR. I have them macro'd to Shield Slam, where in Wrath I had BR there, but it seems to work differently. In Wrath it was an instant and was extra rage, in Cata as CS&BS are on the GCD it sometimes means I miss a SS just for 20 rage which I may or may not need - and for some reason it will only work if I am already in melee, meaning that I don't have a convenient button for rage before a pull. Also BR used to accumulate rage over 10secs (or more), whereas now if you pop BS or CS before a pull you instantly start losing the rage, which I think is poor design.
Another QOL improvement imo should be to make a talent increase the duration of Rend to match Thunderclap. At the moment there seems to be a big question over whether rend is useful in a single target rotation, as you have to TC 3 times as often in order to keep it up, imo this could be changed easily to make it more viable in raids.
Apr 11th 2011 7:36AM Eh? Zerker rage does not proc Enraged Regenration. However you do seem to have to activate it in order to use regen. Which seems stupid as one of the effects of BR is to make you take more damage.
How come the enrage effect you get from one of the tanking talents (I forget which one now) does not seem to permit this? In Wrath I could activate regen at the touch of a button, in Cata I seem to have to activate 1 or two other things (sometimes it seems I have to activate Battle or Commanding shout as well.)
Apr 7th 2011 1:49PM Jabadabadana: The vast majority of the stamina increase in Wrath was just from what was on gear. Yes you could get an extra 10k maybe from gems, trinkets etc, but you didn't have to try to stack stamina to get loads of it, it was just there on the gear.
I've gone up maybe 50k hp just going from blues to epics so far and not got Hc raid gear yet. I can easily imagine us having 250-300k hp over the next few tiers. Vengeance is going to scale extremely well.
Apr 7th 2011 1:13PM The single biggest change I want (and I can't for the life of me see why they changed this in Cata in the first place) is GIVE ME DAMAGE SHIELD BACK! It had bags of character, was a simple way of generating aoe threat, could clearly be made to scale with mastery (whereas before it scaled with Block Value) and was just amazing for generating threat. All you had to do was spend 1 talent point, get in the middle of the mobs and attract their attention.
Now I have to spend 2 talent points (which are twice as valuable) and waste 2 GCDs getting B&T rends spread round the mobs. I get fed up of asking the dps to give time for this to work (seriously dps, is 2 GCDs too long?). Tanking in Wrath was fun and easy, in Cata atm it is a chore.
I thought there was supposed to be a change in paradigm, that we were going to be valuing CC and that dps would have to learn to behave. I have to say I don't see this happening: trash mobs in 5 mans are being nuked down from the nano-second I press charge (Big blue Shaman bar 1st on Omen and I'm not even there yet). One group started moaning about my threat, I had to ask them how the hell I could be having threat issues when they weren't even out dps-ing me?! L2behave.

Dec 17th 2009 10:13AM Some good advice there. Personally i've not had much trouble with the new instances, i'm very well geared and carry a variety of stuff around. I would say to warrior tanks at the moment: change your gear. You absolutely do not need 40k hp and 30k armour in a Hc, even the new ones. A year ago we were lucky to be tanking them with 24k health and 22k armour when we first turned 80.
Once you are def capped concentrate on threat stats such as hit, expertise and especially block value. The trick in tanking Hcs at this stage in the game is not to take no damage, because your healer can almost cetainly cope with anything a Hc can throw at you, the trick is in generating as much threat as possible because dps can be very well geared and are used to tanks who hold threat very well in raids.
On the dreadful new pulls with widely spaced casters, use Hc throw and shield bash on 2 targets to force them to move in to you; that is the key to getting them bunched up so you can build threat more or less as normal. Tanks have gotten lazy, it is good they have had to relearn some skill.
Oct 21st 2008 8:17AM Yeah the new prot is all crazy, it's like an extra zero has been added to every damaging move I make. My guild are halfway through Kara so i'm pretty lowly itemised atm but right after the update my guildmates were being forced to listen to crazed giggling over my new damage calls over /g ...2k revenges, 1700 shield slams...where the hell did they come from? And half my shield slams are now free? WTF? I press 4 buttons and stuff drops dead before my charge cooldown is over.
I did the trick you show above in the SM graveyard last night after we'd splatted the horseman repeatedly. Just ran around pulling everything, didn't use a single attack; mobs were starting to drop dead by the time i'd pulled the lot and then I just stood there while they killed themselves. Still had over 2k health left at the end (out of a little over 12k)...
