Apr 3rd 2012 4:28PM Star Wars: The Old Republic is claiming to be doing something similar with their legacy system, but I don't think it will ever happen in the way they're saying. Basically their idea is that once you get a certain class to max-level, that some of those classes abilities are then available on your other classes (I believe the example they used was a Sith Warrior's Force Choke being applied by a Bounty Hunter).
However, this will fail. It will make PVP balancing a nightmare and discourage PVP participation by people who don't have a bunch of alts to give them extra abilities to level the playing field. Therefore, they probably wouldn't be able to be used in PVP.
As for PVE situations, there's also no point. If they designed a boss encounter that could be cheesed by everyone in the raid trading off "Force Chokes" or other extra abilities, that would be poor encounter design. Furthermore, it would make these extra legacy abilities seem like a requirement for any serious raiding guild, thus nullifying their status as a "fun little treat" for people with lots of alts.
Long story short, it's a neat idea in theory. For levelling and such it would be a nice way to change things up for those with multiple alts, but its execution would cause too many problems with end-game content and PVP to be worth it.
Mar 14th 2012 7:41PM Seconded whole-heartedly. Out of all the fantastic writers on this site, Anne's posts are the most interesting, well-organized, distinctly-voiced, and plain old fun to read.
Dec 11th 2011 6:26PM I've always enjoyed Old Kingdom for the sheer scope of it, and knowing now that the Nerubian dungeons are a product of a scrapped, fully-underground zone, it's a neat glimpse into some unfinished content.
But it is kind of long, and the un-nerfed trash packs after you beat the second boss still gives me a headache, so instead I'll go with Azjol-Nerub. It's short, gorgeous, and the long fall down to face Anub'arak is still one of the coolest first-time moments I can remember. "Where do we go now? You mean... we jump down?!?!"
Dec 2nd 2011 6:28PM Cool, I'll get auctionator right away. Appreciate the replies all.
Dec 2nd 2011 3:39PM This isn't really related to to the column, but I figured here would be the place to ask it.
Did the patch break auctioneer for anyone else? The UI is totally bugged and it's not possible to use the out-of-date version. Any word on if/when they're getting a new version out?
Nov 10th 2011 12:04PM I'm pretty sick of people talking about the "sense of community" being ruined. It's rose-colored glasses, doesn't anyone remember how awful it was before the LFD? Standing around in cities for hours on end spamming "LF Tank Daily H and gtg", was that just me? Also, why is everyone only choosing to remember how awesome all of these groups were? PuG groups fell apart all the time.
It's awful in the LFD, but for different reasons. I'll take a shorter wait in which I have to put forth no effort spamming trade chat with the possibility of running with asshats as opposed to the exact same scenario but with an hours-long wait that may not even culminate in anything.
"Sense of Community". Everyone keeps using that word. Other than having a few people on your friends list (which you're still free to do), who the hell cares?
Nov 1st 2011 1:23PM Love it. And the best part? Every single one of these is still applicable (if you know where to look).
Oct 31st 2011 6:07PM Red XIII.
10 for me.
