Aiding the Alliance: The idle Varian Wrynn {WoW}

Horde players should support the Alliance having an interesting storyline and good characters. You can have all the well-rounded, deep characterization you want, but the experience can only be richer if as much thought is put into the development of your enemies.

Aiding the Alliance: The idle Varian Wrynn {WoW}

Dec 8th 2011 3:06PM While I won't go as far as to call it sexist, I agree with not making Jaina the grounding influence for Varian, if only to avoid some hackneyed romance subplot from popping up in the future. The bitter and jaded curmudgeon that makes me the perfect Death Knight knows that eventually someone put in charge of writing their storyline would be lazy enough to do it.

I'd nominate Genn to be the level-headed balance to Varian. He is a more experienced ruler, historically just as (if not more) stubborn and short-tempered than Varian is. But following the construction of the Greymane Wall, he had to deal with Crowley's rebellion, the Worgen Curse, the Forsaken invasion, and the death of his only son. Even as old as he is, he's spry enough to kick ass when the need arises, and when the need does not arise he can calm down Varian with a combination of elder wisdom, tough love, and the fact that he's a giant werewolf.

Dec 6th 2011 12:56PM While Stormwind makes sense as a choice for Alliance capital since the Alliance has historically been predominantly human, I think it would serve the game better to have it someplace else. It falls into a common trap where humans become the sole focus of any Alliance story.

Even the Blizzard devs fall for it. Outside of starting zones, Alliance arcs tend to be either mostly or entirely human. And in the much maligned faction bias blue post, there was not even a hint of Alliance story development that wasn't human-centric.

I think it's high time that another race takes the spotlight from the humans. Perhaps the Council of Three Hammers, amidst their internal bickering, come to the agreement that Dwarves should take a more central role in the Alliance after the defeat of Deathwing. Or maybe the Dwarves take a more central role by having Moira become the most powerful member of the Council, using her parentage and her relationship with the late Thane Thaurissan to forge an alliance between Bronzebeards who do not support Muradin becoming king and Dark Irons who are not loyal to the Elementals. Or perhaps Magni is freed from his petrification and we see a return of the true king.

Or perhaps Velen, Tyrande, and Jaina enlist the help of Genn to pressure Varian into assisting them in the ongoing war in Kalimdor by providing them with manpower, since Stormwind is in a pretty secure position outside that tiny island near Vashj'ir. This would give humans a role in the Alliance story without necessarily having them hog the spotlight.

Nov 30th 2011 1:40PM I think the one thing that makes these cutscenes work for the encounter is that they are each under 30 seconds.

When they said that there would be cutscenes during the raid, I think a lot of people were worried that that would not be the case.
