Sony appoints Kaz Hirai to prez and CEO, replacing Sir Howard Stringer {Joystiq}

Feb 1st 2012 10:17AM Ignorant trolls aside, Howard Stringer did a very good job at Sony, helping it turn around many of its businesses. By the time he had become president, the PS3 was already well into development and about to be launched so assigning any blame to him for it is patently silly.

The problem with Sony is that it has done very little on the software side of things and has failed to adequately innovate. There use to be a time when everybody used a Walkman, aspired to own a Sony Trinitron, and played on Playstations. A lot of that space has either been taken over by another company (Read: Apple and Samsung and Nintendo) with Sony playing a much smaller role despite having huge momentum previously.

What has happened to SOny has happened to other Japanese countries. You HAVE to innovate and you have to create a great user experience. Imagine how much more successful the PSP would have been if it had had an Itunes app at launch so that people could download movies and games.

Hopefully Kaz understands where Sony went wrong in its game business and rights the ship.

Nvidia posts $141 million loss in Q2, consumer business to blame {Joystiq}

Aug 13th 2010 4:24PM @thinkthis

Agree 100%. Delays = Lost profits. I think you can read a lot into the profits by how efficient a card is in terms of power usage too. More efficiency means better design which means less of a need to cram more transistors and units just to keep up with the competition which is what Nvidia has had to do constantly just to be marginally competitive since the cool-running ATI 4800 line started taking Nvidia to town.

Now I got a GTX 275 instead of a 4850 because I didn't care about the 10-15% performance difference because I had a need for CUDA but damn that thing is huge and heats up my entire room.

Also, people don't realize this but Nvidia is in a lot of other businesses too such as motherboards and discrete processors for mobile devices (it created the graphic chip for the Zune). It's losing the motherboard business because of intel's new processor line, and it is facing heavy competition in it's other businesses from intel and other processor manufacturers too.

RUSE won't use Ubisoft's controversial DRM {Joystiq}

Aug 12th 2010 1:50PM I'm going to go on a branch here and defend Ubisoft a bit. A lot of great games have not come to the PC (and now the PSP) because of rampant piracy. Epic didn't bring Gears of War 2 to PC because of piracy issues. Red Dead Redemption had a PC logo on early ads but has yet to be announced or released for PC.

Content developers are there to make money. When they don't even get a ROI and actually eat into their console sales by releasing on PC (where its easier to pirate), they are NOT going to release games for PC period.

And this is for a system that has ZERO licensing fees unless they sign up for games for windows which is not necessary.

Ubisoft is one of the few big publishers still going multiplatform for their stuff and I am glad as Assassin's Creed II had framerate issues on my PS3 and 360.

If you don't like it, don't buy it ... but I seriously doubt Ubisoft had less sales than other similar pc titles because of DRM when piracy is already so rampant.
