The Light and How to Swing It: Healing Valithria Dreamwalker {WoW}

Mar 14th 2010 8:31PM This is a fun fight. I'd add the two piece T10 bonus is nice here. I use it once at the beginning of the fight and the once when I pop all my CDs. A few things I do here help. At one point I healed her for 10% in one shot due to all the CDs kicking in.

I use Divine Illumination early and then save it for the last 20%. Once she hits 80% and I come out of the portal I call out for Heroism and then pop my wings, DI and the first thing I do is LoH her. I also switch from haste food to SP food for this fight and will use a Frost Wyrm flask instead of Distilled Wisdom here. Oh and the 245 libram is actually used for once here when I do it. Otherwise I did what you did in the 10 man. I focused on her, spot healing those who needed it that got close. Otherwise I spammed on myself with the occasional HS when it was on CD for the crit effect.

One thing I've noticed about the beacons, sometimes you have to stop a moment to actually get them to notice you hit them. Also if you miss one keep going. Don't turn around since you will lose too much time. Also try and drop out of the portal phase near the front of her. The portals are normally in an arc to her front.

Man in the middle attacks circumventing authenticators {WoW}

Feb 28th 2010 5:28PM This kind of attack doesn't require the authenticator to work. Man in the middle attacks can work w/o the authenticator. The actual moral to this story is watch what you download.

Feb 28th 2010 5:27PM We do still need to judge to keep the haste proc up. It's a judgement call (hah!) when to use it since we may have to worry about the GCD. We don't have to constantly judge though since the buff lasts a good bit of time.

Feb 22nd 2010 8:20AM Good article, you are missing a few things though regarding how a Paladin heals ok versus healing great. I see some mention of the HL vs. FoL debate. I tend to agree with the writer here that HL is the way to go. That said...

1. Sacred Shield. This allows for quite a bit of mitigation, plus the HoT is is good as well. You should, in most situations, be keeping SS up on your tank at all times. You can weave in FoL as a result to keep the HoT rolling.

2. Divine Illumination, in some fights, should be used early and whenver it is up from CD. If you have the two piece T10 bonus you can use it for points where you know a spike is coming.

I will look to start using DP around 85% on some fights, not wait until 50%. I've found use of this ability is very much dependent on the fight. (Marrowgar is an example of just waiting till the bone storm to look to use it.) If you are using the Beacon on your MT (which you should usually) then you won't be directly healing said tank much except for the FoL to roll the hot off of SS or in cases where the potebtial Beacon lag is an issue. In these cases Holy Shock is very useful. Remember it also increases the crit chance when you get the proc effect for Holy Light.

Also in some fights, don't use HL until later if the boss damage ramps up. In the end though you have to use your CDs and heals intelligently. Same with trinkets. Boost your SP on a use trinket and recast the SS since it scales with spellpower. Just because you can spam HL does not mean you should. Use it when you have to, same with everything else.

@Jen: Currently, the iLvl 200 libram (Renewal) is the best for a HL Paladin. The mana savings are more useful than any potential SP boost. We overheal like mad as it is.

A challenge to Blizzard's secretive philosophy {WoW}

Sep 10th 2009 4:15PM Activision/Blizzard is also a publicly traded company. Any announcements they make will have an affect on the stock price. This is something very important that has to be taken into account when mentioning dates.

Release dates are funny things. Anyone who works developing software knows these dates are ones you always try and meet as hard as possible but there has to be a threshold. It's where the idea of "good enough" comes in. If I were to release a piece of software only when it was perfect I'd never release. On the flip side I am very wary of misquoting an estimate for dates because I don't want to disappoint my end user. There has to be a balance there. It's very tricky finding it.

All the above said, while I like to know when something is coming out, I don't go nuts worrying about it. As long as I know the problem is being worked on I am happy. I suspect the vast majority is less date aware than the vocal minority.

Would a high level road map be nice? Sure, but it is no deal breaker and is definitely not something I'd bother to push them on. There are much bigger issues.
