Mac OS X Lion sporting 1024x1024 icons, 3200x2000 wallpapers; Retina display Macs coming? {}

Apr 24th 2011 4:29PM I probably wouldn't wait since they just refreshed the Macbook Pros last month.

What do you want to see in the next Final Cut Studio? {}

Apr 7th 2011 5:18PM 1) Image sequence imports. I work at a VFX facility where all our comps are rendered out as image sequences, and the fact that I either have to use Nuke or Quicktime Pro to conform the sequences as a movie is a massive PITA. On Avid DS, I just navigate to the sequence, right click, "Capture".

2) Reasonable handling of 23.976 (or 24p) material on 29.97 timelines. Either give me a 2:3 Expand filter (a la Avid DS) or a preference to automatically add 2:3:2:3 (preferred) or 2:3:3:2 pulldown on the timeline. The broken way Final Cut does it now (2:2:2:4 pulldown) is just embarrassing.

3) Quit guessing what my source gamma is. Change the "Imported Still/RGB Video Gamma" setting to default to 2.20 because the "Automatic" setting is /always/ wrong.

4) Better processing of "real time" effects. Running an Avid DS on the same hardware as Final Cut is a good way to learn to appreciate how much better the Avid is with regards to performance on non-rendered clips (and what it thinks needs rendered in the first place).

5) Better DVE handling. Final Cut's DVE tools are simply inferior to almost every other editing system's.

Mac App Store bargains: Plants vs. Zombies and more {}

Feb 17th 2011 5:08PM The App Store is part of the 10.6.6 patch. So yes.

Ghostcrawler talks tanks and threat {WoW}

Dec 16th 2010 3:18PM Tattoo this on the backs of both your hands. Then write it in permanent marker on your monitor.

If the tank dies, it's the healer's fault.
If the healer dies, it's the tank's fault.
If the DPS dies, it's their own damn fault.

Thank you, Ms. Robert for that.

Switcher Profile: Joshua Kors has no idea how to use a Mac, returns it {}

Dec 14th 2010 2:47PM So you'd rather "notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" instead of "vi /etc/hosts"? It's the same file with the same end result. Well, I can understand why you might not want to use vi, but editing your hosts file to block specific sites on the internet is like hitting a window with a rock to open it. It works, but there are better ways.

In Windows you can use the Windows Firewall (or any of the third party firewall solutions) to block traffic to and from sites, and in OS X you can use ipfw to do the same thing (I really like WaterRoof as a front end to ipfw if you don't manage firewalls all day).

Or you can invest in a firewall appliance that will block sites for you at your internet connection (Juniper Netscreen 5GT's can be found on ebay for less than $100). No more having to edit the hosts files (or firewalls) on 2 computers. No more worrying about cell-phone browsers. No more worrying that your kids might learn how to edit their own hosts files.

New AppleTV delivers on $99 price point, streaming {}

Sep 1st 2010 2:57PM @archer75

I work for a post house, and the vast majority (all) of the HD broadcast material that we deliver for is 1080i29.97 or 1080PsF29.97 (PsF is progressive content set up for interlaced broadcast). The television infrastructure isn't set up to handle progressive content yet. Actually, I still deliver some things on BetaSP for standard definition. :/

Not that 1080p would really benefit you in broadcast. All the tapes we send to stations are HDCAM (1440x1080 on tape - presented at IO as 1920x1080 and 3:1:1 color sampling). I've never delivered anything on HDCAM SR which would give you real 1080p. The stations just don't have decks for that.

Rumor: Apple to launch 4k video format? {}

Jul 20th 2010 11:05AM We shoot 4k frequently for commercials now (on RED). And many films are shot digitally at 2k or 4k.

I don't think that you'll see 4k in the home anytime soon, but Final Cut Pro only supports 2k right now. 4k support in the next FCS would be nice indeed.

iMovie, other non-Apple QuickTime components updated {}

Mar 26th 2010 10:51AM I use both. Flip4Mac for WMV9 playback (and encoding) and Perian for most other things. They coexist happily and are both free (for decoding - Perian is donationware, Flip4Mac is payware if you want to encode).
