Profanity filters, homophobic slurs, and Blizzard's shaky relationship with the LGBT community {WoW}

Jan 25th 2012 11:30AM *sigh* There's so much half-truth in this article it makes me sad.

There have been "gay" guilds in WoW since it's inception, mostly people who moved over from the various EQ guilds. Proudmoore had gay guilds on it WELL before the arrogant ass Andrews came along and made this big stink about it.

See, what you aren't being told is the WAY Andrews advertised her guild... not as somewhere mature or inclusive, but somewhere where ONLY gay people were welcome, and she did so in General chat, which honestly, is just troll baiting.

Early on when this non-story broke, part of the problem was Andrews was baiting the trolls, attacking anyone who didn't immediately support her, and bashing anyone who didn't 100% agree with her.

I'm gay, and I'm also QUITE out, but everything she did along the way just reeked of 'look at me I'm a special snowflake' (emphasis on the "flake" part). I'm in a gay-friendly guild, on a PvP server, and we've attracted gay players aplenty but we don't scream how we're looking for gay players, because we're just looking for people who aren't assholes.

I chafe at people who keep promoting Andrews as some sort of unsung hero - and that Blizzard dissolved her guild because they were gay... this is utter bullshit. Blizzard took action primarily because she was STARTING 'barroom brawls' in general chat and couldn't be told that perhaps throwing one's sexuality out there at everyone is in poor taste (especially as a first introduction!)

And before people jump down my throat, on most servers if you started talking about your sexual ANYTHING in general chat you're GOING to get trolled, and trolled hard. I've seen people torn apart for mentioning a mere DATE in general chat. It's not just homosexuality that brings out the bad behaviors in General, people.

Officers' Quarters: Guilds struggled after Cataclysm's raid changes {WoW}

Your overly optimistic view on how guilds will get stronger is flawed on SO many levels BUT I will concede one thing: LFR in particular does a good job of keeping people in enough purples so they don't get all bent out of shape if they don't get the loot drops they want in regulars or heroics.

But you still haven't addressed my original issue: Guilds don't NEED to exist at all aside from guild perks. You don't need anyone's help to do heroics, you don't need anyone's help to raid, you don't need anyone's help to do ANYTHING in the game at ALL now aside from the things guild perks themselves provide, so all people want to know is "are you a level 25 guild already?" If that's a players first response, I'll always send them packing.

Unless your guild is top end progression you aren't anything 'special', and nobody gives a damn about your tabard, your website, your code of ethics or any of that, it's all about what can THEY get out of you. So as for getting stronger, perhaps you need to take a hard look at how things have wound up, many larger guilds simply fizzle out, many raiding guilds on the servers I play on have disappeared, people are to the point of offering to level and gear up people in the hopes of POSSIBLY fielding a raiding group... how is that 'stronger' exactly?

And why, when my guilds in particular weren't even raiding guilds, and hardly the 'gatekeepers of raiding', we had a stronger core group, we actually raided more, and we had a PURPOSE even when we weren't doing endgame content. How is it that we were more social and more willing to help each other out when someone needed to run a dungeon or somesuch? Now people barely even grunt a 'hello' at each other before hopping in the LFG/LFR queues. They do their stuff, hang out a few minutes in Stormwind afterwards and then log? It's hardly a unique problem, some of our ex members say the same thing is happening in the guilds they moved to.

Stronger indeed... :P

Officers' Quarters: Guilds struggled after Cataclysm's raid changes {WoW}

Jan 16th 2012 1:30PM But with the way things have been lately, and the dwindling pool of people who're willing to commit anything resembling EFFORT to get anything, people just want to join guilds for the level 25 perks and could give a shit about anything beyond that.

It's easy enough to spam-invite people to your guild in theory, but right now when EVERYTHING is handed to the player, the level of self-entitlement you see nowadays makes the social aspect of the guild fall apart. it's gotten to the point where we're starting to see people advertising their guilds on a regular basis again because nobody really CARES about guilds the way they used to. When you can LFR until you're geared enough to PUG the current content, where is the benefit to having a guild?

On my server, and the servers my other friends play on, most guilds are merely a vanity tag and extra bank slots for a small group of people, and the only reason you ever hear about someone looking for a guild is so they can get the lvl 25 perks.

Couple that with the AWFUL guild recruitment system in WoW and yer looking at a pretty bleak outcome.

Know Your Lore: Top 10 lore developments of 2011, part 2 {WoW}

Jan 8th 2012 7:48PM By Elune's tits, every time I hear Arcturion's wheezy diatribe I die a little inside.

And every WoW player I know STILL loathes Tyrande's sudden-from-absolutely-nowhere accent.

Other than those two things it's been a good year for the 'voices of WoW'

The Queue: My heat still isn't fixed {WoW}

Jan 6th 2012 12:49PM Okay I'm curious:
What's to stop the Old Gods from resurrecting Deathwing at a later point should they need him? The Aspect dragons blew out their fuses when we 'defeated' him, but in the scheme of things this isn't the first time they've done that and we see where THAT wound up :P

Know Your Lore: The top 10 lore reveals of Cataclysm, part 1 {WoW}

Dec 28th 2011 7:01PM With the return of Cenarius and Goldrinn, etc... the Aspect's suggestion that 'this is the age of mortals' is still somewhat suspect.

There are still primal powers running around Azeroth, just not the dragon aspects (which I think is a crying shame frankly). *sigh*

MMO Roundup: The Old Republic exceeds 1 million subscribers {WoW}

Dec 27th 2011 9:56PM I dunno, they have about 6 months to start dropping content patches before they suffer the fate of all the previous 'wow killers' have suffered.

I wish them luck... in this market they are GOING to need it.
