Jan 23rd 2012 10:29AM This is the best article I've read in a long time. It cuts through the usual GW2 apologetics/evangelism and strikes a reasonable tone with reasonable analysis of the game's features.

Of course fans of the traditional MMO structure will be a little unmoored in GW2. I'm such a fan and it took many months and the helpful MVOP guild for me to learn GW1. Now I'm 31/50 in my Hall, and have taken time off to play SWTOR. There is a difference between the games, and not everyone will make that transition fully enjoying each experience. Which is OK. Choice is good.

But some of us won't be choosing because we can enjoy traditional games (SWTOR, Tera) as well as different games (GW2) at the same time. See you all in-game!

Try to imagine for a moment that neither of you are paragons of objectivity and the very embodiment of rationality. Imagine that the world does not recognize your greatness as taste-makers and arbiters of cool. Imagine for a moment that the vast majority of gamers that you routinely deride as "CoD zombies" or "Madden fans" do not give three bantha craps about whether a game is "innovative" or "pushes the genre forward" so much as they do about whether the game is fun.

Imagine that in this world sandbox games never grew out of the niche market for people that want to play online sim games rather than fantasy-action games. Imagine still further that the majority of gamers, instead of steering clear of EA and BioWare because of perceived faults in business practices simply buy whatever they think looks cool.

I know such a world is entirely contrary to how things actually are, where you two respected blog commenters that others look to for insightful opinion and commentary, but please try.

In this hypothetical world I am describing, might not a game that is merely an update on already-popular games packaged in a hugely popular intellectual property that RETAINS its popularity even in the face of fanboy rage over the creator's constant changes, be itself a popular game? Is that not a likely possibility?

Dec 19th 2011 3:34PM I love how the goal post keeps getting moved. Six months ago all we heard was how the NDA drop was going to result in reveals of incompetence and canceled pre-orders. When that didn't happen, we were treated to stories of a nightmare launch with no grace period. Now that BioWare is on track for a good launch, everyone is blathering on about retention and the pace of updates.

Six months from now people will be saying subs are dropping or aren't increasing fast enough and that patches are too long in development.

And once patches come out and the population creeps upward, they'll say that options for endgame play are too limited and there isn't enough non pvp/raiding/crafting content.

Two years from now people will be saying the expansion is taking too long and the new classes aren't balanced, etc.

We get it; you don't like the game. Shouldn't you be playing one you do like rather than trolling these forums?

The Soapbox: On gold-farming and the grind {Massively}

Dec 13th 2011 2:16PM The problem is that the game you describe is a combination of FarmVille, The Sims and Second Life, two of which feature developer-sponsored RMT. You don't fix the problem of RMT by shifting it from a black to a white market.

People play games, especially RPGs, to recreate the D&D experience, which means levels, loot, stats and grind. People who play MMOs as virtual life simulators with occasional RPG elements may bemoan this, the same as tabletop gamers bemoan dungeon crawl, pre-planned modules.

A good game will mask grindy tasks with extra-mechanical meaning (eg, story) and artificial progression barriers with lore-based reasons.

I think some mechanics are holdovers of keeping people playing (like large level caps, gear grinds, etc.) and need to go away. But to do away with grindy tasks like quests, dungeons, missions, material farming, etc., is to do away with plot devices. Saying you'll replace it with player-generated content, crafting minigames and graphical chat rooms changes the game and makes it a glorified social networking tool.

Dec 1st 2011 11:24AM @(Unverified) the gaming press is full of hipsters that care more about the theory behind a game than the game itself. Mainstream gamers do not care that it is mechanically similar to WoW. It's not WoW's mechanics that bore them but the setting, atmosphere and style that bores them.

People want updates and fresh looks, not necessarily super innovative games. Like how COD or Madden sell gangbusters every year despite being map/roster updates.

Gaming press is like music press was 15 years ago. Enthusiasts and regular people simply care about different things, which is why no one really cares about the big gaming press anymore. They're either bought and paid for or have tastes outside the mainstream in an attempt to hold on to indie/hipster cred.

You mean the game where there are no quests per se and there is no penalty for merely taking part in zone-wide events? Versus the more traditional game with tagging and crafting/gathering done by companion NPCs rather than the player character?

I just don't see the impetus for botting in either game. A "bot" that sits and gives out crew commands would be indistinguishable from a player sitting there and doing the same thing, and wouldn't be stealing resources from actual players or wrecking the economy. BioWare could even build that functionality into the game and advertise it as a perk: your companions level up their crafting while they're offline, as long as you find a "skill book" or whatever.

And in GW2, the bot would simply take part in the dynamic events throughout a zone, maybe killing smaller mobs, etc. It would never fully participate in the event, but it doesn't need to in order to get a chance at rewards. But that would be horribly inefficient as a way of getting something that GW2 isn't going to require you to need.

Bots exist for the same reason gold farmers and item sellers do: people do not want to farm, grind, etc., to get cool stuff, and are willing to take shortcuts. If you remove those boring parts of the game (like SWTOR and GW2 are doing) and focus more on fun, engaging, story-based activities, then there's little reason for people to bot.

Now, this will not stop gold-selling and power-leveling done by less-than-scrupulous companies. Nothing will, not until people change and stop looking for shortcuts.

Lots of people have terrible, horrible lives, childhoods, etc. But in the end, everyone is faced with the choice of whether their circumstances dictate who they are and how they act. These monsters made a conscious choice to commit the two most horrific crimes humans can commit: rape and murder. What's more, they planned it and chose someone that was their friend, a young woman with her entire life ahead of her.

I know that Canada does not have the death penalty, and capital punishment is a contentious issue with valid points on both sides, but honestly... these two are prime examples of people too sick to be allowed to live anymore. They *will* remain a danger to the guards and other inmates in prison.
