First, by "hardcore" gamers (note the quote marks), I mean the type of keyboard jockeys who asked for open PvP servers and the like and quitted in the week because they aren't as good as they thought to be.

Perma-death works in PnP games because a) You have a GM watching you and b)Is a closed group, not a MASSIVE Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

I can't believe that people are comparing EVE to this. In EVE, the real time-consuming progression, which is your skills and your ISK are untouchable for anybody than yourself and CCP (except whatever you decide to invest in your ships, which should be an amount small enough).

Time and/or effort consuming progression HAS to be inviolable or else a "haha screw you" cancellation point is created. This is BAD, BTW.

No amount of "niche market", "realism" or "keeping with the lore" will change this.

Perma-death is one of those cute ideas from armchair designers and "hardcore" players that does. not. work. in the real world. Period.

That will only make a lot of the players quit and the few who don't, will simply hide rather than risk losing their char. Aka nobody plays the game.

I don't care about "realism", but perma-death is a horrible idea in an MMO.

Is more easy for developers to give arrows and flashy lights to players themsevles that having a third-party monkey do it anyways. Besides, people SAY that they like challenge. That's a LIE.

Jun 6th 2010 1:14PM The 3 major issues with console MMOs are:

*Server lag.

The first is because the degree of button mashing that works for a console is heavy on server cycles.

There's ways around it, heavily instanced games (Global Agenda) or turn-based system (Atlantica Online) of the top of my head.

Comunication is because people will not stand having to go between the keyboard and the controller. Which means voice chat.

The final one, is that a regular videogame and a MMO are vastly different beasts, skepticism of SW: TOR is based on that.

Although since they were called "worse than the NINTENDO forums", that isn't too much high of a bar.

There's place for improvement, for once I would like to NOT SEE a bunch of poorly written QQ every time that I go there.
