Riot Games' Marc Merrill on the Tencent acquisition and the future of League of Legends {Joystiq}

Mar 9th 2011 9:21PM @Nmaster64 As a 'customer' for Riot games, whether or not you have spent a penny, your word means something to them. If you would say that to a gaming publisher but never have purchased one of their games, would they care what you think if you weren't press involved? To S2 games would you say it's around the same? Honestly, I wouldn't know. Just from the rumors of HoN, I stay away from the game and the community in general. The fact that something could be worse than LoL's community is sickening and that just there is enough to make me never want to even touch it.

Before you throw Riot Games under the bus, I do believe hearing about some changes though with HoN recently where they're starting to 'nickle and dime' their customers where they only get a lesser percentage of the content as they normally get for 30$, no? Maybe it was wrong, but it's what I've heard.

Anyways, enough of LoL vs HoN because that can go on for hours. What I want to get back to is what you've said about LoL. First of all, yes Riot Games made a mistake announcing Magma Chamber very long ago. New companies (Riot Games is still very new and this is their first title) make mistakes. Are you going to claim that Blizzard and Valve haven't made any either? Google HL2 leaks just for an example of what companies do sometimes. Valve was a bit more veteran at that point in time compared to Riot which is still a 'baby'. My point is when they announced Magma Chamber, they also realized that their userbase started to grow to a large extent with how easily approachable the game is to nearly any type of player. Casual, Normal Gamer, Hardcore, ect. This started to cause server stability problems, if you actually played as much back in the day as you have claimed to you would know that this was absolutely frustrating. The only time you have trouble logging in now, other than the random weekend day every few months, is on patch days. What game doesn't get crowded on patch days?

LoL started out as an experiment and a first game for a brand new publisher with very young CEO's and developers. Do you need any more proof to that other than the fact they use ADOBE AIR? They could have never imagined how large their game has grown to in such a short amount of time, you will be shocked whenever they release their true number of active players. So, pardon me if Riot Games has to work more on things like that, I don't see millions logging into HoN.

You never EVER have to put down a single penny on the game if you don't want to. You say don't give the 10 free champions a week bull? What is a game that is supposed to be free to play if you choose it supposed to give you all of the champions at once so you can go enjoy yourself and then only charge on skins? Skins are only cosmetic and if they only got money off of those they wouldn't be able to hire anybody. micros transaction systems are setup so that they want you to purchase things with real money to take shortcuts. If you even bother responding to this you'll mention something about not enough bundles for people who want to purchase champions without spending a fortune and to that they recently made an announcement about making more.

So, excuse my rant but to just flat out say the things you have about a company and then use bocus things to try and persuade other joystiq readers that may have never played this game before is ridiculous. Come back if you have some real concrete things, I understand my first rant about HoN isn't 'concrete' but at least it's more than yours is.

Steelers win Madden 11 Super Bowl simulation {Joystiq}

Feb 1st 2011 11:41PM @Gurujot If you look at the past two Super Bowls the steelers have had the same thing happen to them in both yet they've still won. I can't really say much for the Packers in that regard either. They looked much more dead after the 1st quarter. 2-3rd was terrible.
