Varian Wrynn is Right, Part III {WoW}

Apr 29th 2009 6:19PM I've long suspected that the lore about the Orcs continues to depict them as murderous savages, and that the Forsaken have one and only one purpose - the destruction of all living creatures, which includes their allies.

The trolls I'm unsure about, the Blood Elves are arrogant and largely crazy in their addiction to magic. The Tauren strike me as the only horde race that are basically honourable.

This article describing the actual weakness of Thrall is interesting. Instead of being a strong leader, he appears to in fact be more of a figurehead, whether this is by design or because he lacks the balls to stand up to his advisors doesn't really matter.

Nice article, although - sadly - I don't have as much faith in the Blizzard writing team, and I don't beleive they have thought about it this deeply.

The Queue: The Scantily Clad Edition {WoW}

Mar 26th 2009 5:28PM I think Blizzard was just pandering to the young male teenage audience that is probably a significant part of their subscriber base. But as the subscriber base has expanded, I think they decided to be a little less silly. Although there are still times where we wonder about the developers.

The entire Hodir daily quest series for example.

But as Alex said, its not generally been all THAT bad, and there were ways to mitigate the silliness if you wanted to.

My Paladin (human female) had some rather skimpy pants when she was in her low 70s (more like metal leggings with a metal thong bottom - owie) that I used as healing gear, I beleive they were older greens from BC.

I have at various points had gear that exposed far more than I thought was really appropriate. I always had this impression of looking at her like a father and saying "young lady, you are *not* going into the dungeon dressed like that!"

My tailor main promptly created her a Stylish Red Shirt that covered up properly, and she was good to go.

Her current gear (prot) is really good, darker hues, and completely covers her, quite appropriate I think.

Arcane Brilliance: I still don't like spirit {WoW}

Mar 23rd 2009 6:33PM First let me say for those singing how they already stacked Spirit up, good for you. Let me guess? Arcane? You need all the mana regen you can get.

But for Fire and FFB mages spirit currently is *not* that relevant. What *is* relevant is crit chance. Tons and tons of crit chance. Ignite and Hot Streak are a big part of the Fire/ FFB mage DPS, a surprisingly large part. If you don't get them that regularly, your DPS is substandard.

And if set up properly, mana is not a problem. Mana gem, evocate, and a potion, you are good for all but the longest battle. Plus we get some of our mana back on crits (those again) through MoE. So Spirit is (currently) a non-issue for a Fire/ FFB mage.

The basic problems I have with what Blizz is trying to do are:

1. This tendency towards making everyone the same has already made it so that Priests, Warlocks, and Mages are fighting over the same gear. This is making it even worse. So now every spec for three classes will be fighting over the same gear (no other class has it that bad). But are they going to increase the drop rate to compensate? Probably not.

2. The fact that Arcane is really the only viable spec for raiding until *very* well geared and you can get those crazy crit chances for Fire/ FFB is a serious flaw in the PvE design for the class. But what does Blizzard worry about? How to make Spirit 'more meaningful'.

I suppose perhaps on that second point this Spirit change may make it so those high Crit chances are a little easier to reach. But it sill speaks to a fundamental flaw with design and that Blizzard is going about fixing it in a completely ass backwards way.

Arcane Brilliance: Q to the power of Q {WoW}

Mar 20th 2009 1:41PM I love that idea of the pet Death Knight!

Although I think I already have that, it's our main tank.

Oh, as a note, apparently mages aren't lame ducks, all of us who think that need to "L2Play", and "R bad". At least according to some posters on the official WoW forums.

Although I am amused by the fact that dozens, even hundreds of people complain that mages are crippled, and there are a hundful of people who think otherwise and that the rest of us just suck.

It does seem - although I haven't been able to test the theory yet - that there is ONE build that seems to at least be able to give decent DPS. Arcane centered around heavy use of Arcane Blast.

Frostbolt, Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, nay, thee shalt not use these as they be substandard. Thou shalt play thy mage one way, and one way only. Or thy shall suck.

Thanks Blizz... ya wankers...
