Gold Capped: Patch 4.1 and Maelstrom Crystals {WoW}

Mar 29th 2011 5:17AM Another reason for the low prices of Abyss Crystals early on in WOTLK was Naxx. It was out for ages and very easy, so there was a good number of epic items that could get DE'd. The raids in Cata are much more difficult and there are much fewer drops.

A survey of gear levels in current 10- and 25-man Cataclysm raiding {WoW}

Jan 3rd 2011 7:48PM This information is at best correlation. It is possible the ilevel difference had nothing to do with beating any of the fights - no relationship. If there is a correlation, you don't know which way the arrow goes.
It may be necessary to have higher ilevel gear to beat the 10 man fights.
Raid teams that can beat the 10 man fights may have higher ilevel gear because they beat more fights.

Correlation does NOT equal causation. There is too little data here to draw any conclusions.

The Best of WoW Insider: November 2010 {WoW}

Dec 31st 2010 2:43AM "The Cataclysm" was the breaking of Azeroth. Patch 4.0.3 was called "The Shattering", this is when "the cataclysm" happened and the old world changed. The expansion is called "Cataclysm", this is the expansion with new races and increased level cap.

"The Cataclysm", ie the shattering patch, happened in November.

"Cataclysm", as in the expansion, was released in December.

I would say that "cataclysm went live" or "cataclysm came out" on 7th December, because this is when the expansion became available. The shattering was a patch, NOT an expansion. Other patches have changed the world (eg sunwell/quel danas).

The people who are tools in trade chat and cry on the forums are a vocal minority. The average age of a wow player may be 30, but the demographics of that vocal minority subset of the wow playing population will probably be quite different.

"it's just too punishing if you do poorly."

Think of it as a reward for doing well, not a punishment for doing badly. If you do well you get rewarded with a shorter run. If you do don't do well then you do not deserve a reward, because rewarding failure is reinforcing negative behavior.

If you think there is too much trash in the instance, I could get on board with that, but I can't agree that you should be rewarded for being bad.

"the heroic blues you get will still be heroic-quality loot. Their color is just changing to give the purple color meaning again."

Is this true, or do you not understand the difference between epic and rare and the interaction with ilevel?

Even though ilevel may be the same, epic 359 ilevel gear should be better than rare 359 ilevel gear, because it has a higher stat allocation. You get more stats per ilevel for epic items than blue items, so its not just a color difference.
Rare: ilvl = ItemSlotValue * 1.8 + 0.75
Epic: ilvl = ItemSlotValue * 1.2 + 26
