Mar 28th 2012 11:11AM Reading recs:
1. any of the zany, endlessly inventive books of Walter Moers, only relatively recently translated into English: The Alchemaster's Apprentice, Rumo, The City of Dreaming Books, etc.
2. the brutally, hilariously satire of early Evelyn Waugh, esp. Vile Bodies, A Handful of Dust, The Loved One, Decline and Fall.
3. Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles, a beautiful, haunting retelling of the Iliad from Patroclus's point of view.
I've got loads more, but that'd get you started ;-)
Dec 22nd 2011 1:08PM I love you, Allison. Your couple-sentence summaries of the articles are themselves worth the price of admission.
(And no, just because said price is $0 interwebs doesn't mean that I'm damning you with faint praise. I'm praising you with praise-y praise.)
Happy holidays to all!!
Oct 9th 2011 2:37PM Great video. Gotta love anything that features creepily multiplying yet still adorable hipster kittehs....
Sep 9th 2011 10:06AM Yay for the Oblivion reference! Oh Elder Scrolls, how I miss you....
(Oh, and nifty screen shot too, hehe)
Sep 8th 2011 6:58PM Cue the Mr. Burns-voiced "Excellent...."
Sep 8th 2011 5:31PM Agreed, agreed, agreed. After a long time in a very casual guild where normal-mode progression was the main goal, I switched to a hard-mode-oriented guild, and was amazed at how small a sense of accomplishment I felt at my first hard-mode kill. It just wasn't special enough to justify the time and energy: I quit raiding altogether shortly thereafter.
Sep 8th 2011 5:29PM Excellent column, as always. Much as I admire the foxy Fox and the always inimitable Archmage Pants, you take the cake for the academic yet approachable rigor and intellectual commitment that you give to whatever topic you take up. I miss your more humor-inflected squibs, though ... have you not been imbibing enough cough syrup lately??
Mar 23rd 2011 9:23AM My co-raid lead and I refer to Magmaw's two phases as "dom top" and "sub bottom." That pretty much sums it up....
Mar 1st 2010 3:19PM And then watch a hilarious feminist deconstruction of the commercial:
Feb 13th 2010 11:10AM That's my guildie! Woot! Plus: didn't realize that lichbloom was so pretty....
