Thanks for the info. I will probably give the beta a try then. The pvp issue is by far the bigger concern of the two I listed. Good to hear they have dedicated pve-only servers. I've tried a few other fantasy MMOs but none have ever held a candle to WoW IMO. But I'm always open to a new game. :-)
Feb 15th 2011 4:12PM I find it amusing that a few people on WoW Insider get so upset with those who react negatively or with scepticism towards Rift.
I know this debate has come up a few times, and I don't mean to open a wound again. But come on, the game's marketing actively goes toe-to-toe against WoW (with the rather smug line "you're not in Azeroth any more" no less).
While it's only fair to give Rift a chance in its own right, it's also understandable that many WoW fans will react with scepticism to another "WoW killer" tooting it's own horn, possibly prematurely. And that trailer didn't help much. It was impressive in some ways, but very odd/awkward in others.
Incidentally, every time I've looked at the comments on Rift or Aion topics on Massively it seems at least half of them are raging against how WoW sucks. Yet I don't think I've ever seen anyone defend the merits of by far the biggest subscription MMO in Massively's user comments. I guess that's one of the reasons WoW has it's own dedicated site instead of having all news reported on Massively. But to expect WoW Insider users to not criticize Rift while at the same time so many Massively users nerd-rage against it, seems unwarranted.
For me Rift does look interesting. The graphics look amazing, and I expect the gameplay will be at least pretty good.
But there are 2 deal-breakers for me: 1) the thought of random rifts opening up and spewing out mobs who kill quest givers when handing in quests sounds like it'll get real old real fast; 2) I'm not a pvper, and from what I've read, Rift is really focused on that.
Feb 15th 2011 12:48PM I think the weirdest glitch I ran across was when I hearthed into Booty Bay on a warlock alt. Instead of being in the inn I found myself out by the dock where you board the ship. Then a couple of seconds later all the terrain vanished, and I and every NPC in the town started falling. We fell and fell and fell some more through a clear sky. Eventually I logged off and back in again. Now I was a ghost and all the NPCs had gone. But I wss still falling through empty sky. After a second log cycle I was in the graveyard outside town.
I was a bit disappointed, as that was my lock's first ever death. But it was quite visually beautiful (and certainly surreal!). What's very weird is that I hearthed with my wife and she encountered none of this weirdness.
Feb 3rd 2011 2:00PM I'm pretty sure those Argent Dawn white items (core of elements, etc.) Aren't totally useless. I remember being able to hand them in at Lights Hope Chapel as quest items at least once on my feral druid. And this was after Cata dropped, when EPL had all the towers with flight paths and the chasms had been filled and turned to lakes. Though I don't think those quests are repeatable.
Jan 28th 2011 9:41PM Thanks for the feedback. I couldn't remember what they were exactly, as I was writing far away from my WoW computer, and all i could remember was that they were grey, had wings, and their presence by my toolbars was very annoying! Gryphons sounds right though. :-)
I guess I must have some alts in different resolutions from others, as like I say, the grphon decorations don't appear on all characters, only some. I didn't realize it was even possible to differ your resolution from one alt to another - I thought it was on an account level. :-S Good to know.
I looked up that ChickenBGone addon, and it looks like it's long gone (at least from Curse.com, my preferred location for trusted WoW addons). As I can't remove said gryphons via the standard UI, are there any other toolbar addons which can serve that purpose?
Jan 28th 2011 12:08PM Question for the queue: on some of my alts the bottom toolbar has two decorative dragon heads, one on either side. On other alts these aren't displayed. I'd like to hide these decorative florishes on all my characters' toolbars, preferably without using an addon. How do I hide the dragon images? I figure there must be an option somewhere, but I can't find it. Thanks. :-)
Jan 25th 2011 12:39PM I mainly play melee (mah-ley, heh) classes. And I think the most annoying thing for me is high-level players of the opposite faction who run around with your lowbie while you're leveling, and deliberately run in front of you right as you're about to attack a mob.
Why do they do this? In the hope that you'll accidentally right click just when they jump in front of you, and mark yourself pvp so they can gank you. It doesn't happen too often, but it's happened to me much more frequently than it should.
Also, high-level opposite faction jerks who follow your lowbie around killing quest mobs right as you're about to engage. Some 80-something jack-ass DK was doing this to my wife and I recently for at least 20 minutes while we were trying to level our 20-something characters. Probably a bored 13 year-old. But it's not clever or mature. We ended up playing bejeweled for a while until he flew off to bug someone else.
Jan 18th 2011 12:40PM Great topic! I hadn't realized before, but my different characters definitely bring out different facets of my personality.
My prot warrior encompasses the 'grumpy guy', the 'crude dude' and the aggression and grit apects of my personality.
My ret/prot pally takes on the silent, serious yet kind parts of me.
And my elemental shammy represents the light-hearted, goofy, happy-go-lucky, dance-with-random-players-of-the-other-faction side of me.
Jan 14th 2011 2:22PM My leatherworker/skinner has run into too many cases of others trying to ninja-skin my kills. In fact one of my earliest experiences in the game involved another lowbie running up behind me and ninja-skinning my mobs as soon as I looted (did this twice). As a hunter I was able to teach a lesson by popping a bullet in his target before his charge kicked in. To even things out I did this twice. After receiving a say of rage-filled obscenities about me stealing his kills, I responded with "then don't steal my f--king skins then!" He got the message and moved on.
The ones who trail you and repeatedly try to beat you to the skins from YOUR kills are the worst. Especially when they have the fast-skinning racial. When that happens I just stop, don't loot anything (so nobody can skin) and wait. After a minute or so of them standing next to you in awkward silence they either get the message or get bored. Either way they move on and I resume the skin harvesting.
Jan 7th 2011 12:42PM On a broader note about forges, I wish Blizzard would add the ability to track them to the minimap. Would make all us blacksmiths and engineers happy. Hopefully one day. :-D
