Ghostcrawler returns to the conversation, talks about hit and expertise on tanking gear {WoW}

Mar 23rd 2011 3:18PM As a tank I'm confused by this conversation from the Devs. With the painful shortage of tanks in-game why would they desire to add more 'challenges' to the class regarding gear and stat-balancing? Is there an in-game reason for the devs to be worrying about this? I would like to see less barriers to tanking, not more.

[ forgive the generalizations I'm about to make... ]

Tank - Stam, Str, Dodge, Parry, Mastery, Hit, Expertise (7)
DPS - Primary, Secondary, Mastery, Crit, Haste, Hit (6*)
Heal - Int, Spirit, Mastery, Crit, Haste (5*)

* everyone needs haste/crit, but most classes only stack one of them

Why not make tanking more accessible, not less. If devs want to discuss tanking, let's discuss how to get more people interested in tanking. Keep the hit/expertise on gear sets at a 'good enough' level to keep the barrier to entry low. The advanced 'raid' tanks will continue to read the elitist jerks spreadsheets and juggle stats for high-end content.

Weighting stats so tanks feel pressured to cap hit/expertise over other stats, compared to just hit for most dps, and nothing to cap for healing feels unnecessary. Tanking has never felt boring, but it does sometimes feel like a burden given the demands made of your time since there are few players that are willing to tank (and do it well).

I'd like to hear a conversation from the devs about making tanking more appealing to a broader player base. I recognize a lot of what makes tanking unappealing is the negative actions of other players. Surely the Blizz developers can find a tool or mechanic to offer enough positive reinforcement to counter-balance the negative impact of other players.

1) Counterspell the MOB's mind control ability
2) Slow on the counterspell? Sheep the MC'ed player
3) No need to DPS an MC'ed player if you have CC or stun moves (any class)

May 3rd 2010 2:03PM I'm a big fan of bringing attunements back into the game.

The BC attunements that required a certain reputation with each faction to purchase the key to the heroic version of instances was a great way to ensure players learned the instances / boss encounters as well as acquired appropriate gear before starting the heroic version.

As far as turning the attunements into heirloom pieces so you don't have to repeat the process, I half agree. You've already experienced the lore and know the instance inside and out, but there's still the gear requirement for entering heroics with your alts. Here's where the gear score check would be a nice solution.

I think the pre-heroic and pre-raid phase for players does need to be a little more 'grindy' than it is currently so players don't feel like their non-heroic and non-raid gear is so expendable. Maybe then they'll take the time to properly gem and enchant the gear if they feel like they'll be using it for a few weeks rather than a few hours.

Mastery bonus in Cataclysm to encourage proper gear choices {WoW}

Mar 1st 2010 10:00PM I'm going to play devil's advocate here...

I believe in end-game raiding the 'small Mastery bonus' will be enough to encourage most players to stick to class appropriate gear. But I also believe this isn't where most of the complaints are coming from.

The majority of complaints I've experienced (as a clothie) come from upgrades in instances where players are swapping out leveling or BoE gear for BoP boss drops where increases in stats can be significant. While a 'small Mastery bonus' will (hopefully) discourage this behavior players will still continue to Min/Max their gear.

When a holy paladin dings 85 and goes straight to heroics the drops could outweigh the 'small Mastery bonus' and their questing gear for a 'temporary' improvement in gear until the equivalent plate gear drops and they re-gain their Mastery bonus.

Consider also that players may have to upgrade multiple pieces of gear. The idea of sacrificing the Mastery bonus for 1 piece of gear may not be worth it. But take the holy paladin who just finished leveling, he/she has 12 leveling greens to replace and suddenly 12 off-class armor upgrades will probably outweigh the 'small Mastery bonus'.

In the eyes of the holy paladin the gear is only transitional until they can get the plate drops they're after and get their Mastery bonus back.

Then again, I guess us clothies will never lose our Mastery bonus =) Giveaway: World of Warcraft Programming, 2nd Ed {WoW}

For years my friends have called me hurtful names like 'dumbo' and, um, well mostly the 'dumbo' thing. I've tried regular headphones, but they slip into my ear canal and press directly on my ear drums - ouch! I've tried the 'over the ear' style ear phones and they just press my big ears against my head cutting off precious blood flow to my brain. I've tried everything to pin these massive lobes back - tape, staples, clothes pins, hot glue, helper monkeys - all to no avail. Hopefully this hot new design can help me regain some of my raiding life and self respect back that I've lost over the years!

PS - the helper monkeys could use a vacation.
