Drama Mamas: Of phone calls and slanderers {WoW}

Jul 17th 2009 1:36PM Well, in that case you should warn the rest of your guildmates that this is the case. Don't be surprised if they think your priorities are incompatible with progression raids. Don't worry, though - it's not them. It's you.

Drama Mamas: Of phone calls and slanderers {WoW}

Jul 17th 2009 1:17PM If you're the kind of person who cannot commit to the 24 other people in the raid, don't raid. It is a decision you make - there's plenty of WoW and other games out there for people who have unstable time. There's also guilds that are more or less flexible around timing, and ones that focus on 10-man or heroic dungeons even.

But the first response is NOT a joke. It's one thing to take a call because you've got a sick or hurt family member. It's another thing entirely to keep the guild waiting because you need to chat with your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse/parent whatever. We're all waiting for you to get off the phone, and our time is no less valuable because we're just pixels to you, sorry.

The Queue: Full of it {WoW}

Jul 7th 2009 8:02PM I actually use the white, non-binding cloth gloves. I enchanted them with gatherer (originally, I had 2 pair, one for herbing and one for mining) and hand them off to whatever alt is skilling up a gather skill at the time. The +5 bonus is a WONDERFUL help in the transition between node types - there's usually dead spots, especially in mining, where one resource isn't a guaranteed skill point, but the next resource up is still red to you. This makes those points much shorter (or nonexistent)

Breakfast Topic: Do you buy just because of the WoW brand? {WoW}

Jun 15th 2009 2:01PM I bought one case of horde-flavored game fuel. But it tasted like butt. So I'm not buying any more.

Addon Spotlight: Essential addons for raid leaders {WoW}

Jun 12th 2009 4:27PM Acheron looks cool, although if you look at the Deaths pane in recount, clicking on an individual's name will show the relevant portions of the combat log, telling you how he died.

The ins and outs of the Shroud Loot System {WoW}

Jun 11th 2009 8:35PM I should add - SLS, in practice, has a lot of the same features as suicide kings and plain old need/greed rolls. It's really simple, but the way the points come into play ends up evening over some of the rough spots of need/greed and skings. I really like it.

The ins and outs of the Shroud Loot System {WoW}

Jun 11th 2009 8:29PM We use SLS in Alkahest on Steamwheedle Cartel. It sounds like we do it a little differently - we award a readiness bonus (on time, flasks & food), a per-hour rate, and a per-bosskil rate.

I like it a lot - it rewards active engagement with the guild like any other points-based system, but it prevents people from stockpiling points and using them to blow through lots of lootings.

If you want to conserve your points, bid 10 and roll against everyone else. If you want to call priority on the item, you shroud. The nice thing is that the cost for consecutive successful shrouds goes up geometrically, while you earn points arithmetically. That more or less means that you don't need to worry about degrading points for people who save them for too long or anything - everything evens out over time.

It's also nice that you don't have to rate pieces of gear with costs - people decide on their own what a piece of loot is worth, and loots have differing values for different people. (like a piece of caster gear with spirit vs mp5 vs crit vs haste).

The only other interesting rule we use is that main-spec bidders automatically have priority over off-spec ones, even if they've got fewer points.

The Queue: Soul man {WoW}

Jun 5th 2009 4:33PM This will get lost in the shuffle, I'm sure. But the recount situation almost always occurs because people don't actually look at the fight data. Half of the time, people just look at "overall data", which includes the trash fights. When using recount (or spamming it to show off your peen), you should only ever use the bossfight segment. Click on the little icon that looks like a piece of paper in the recount window frame and select the appropriate piece.

The best zone of Wrath {WoW}

Jun 4th 2009 8:17AM I really, intensely, dislike the Fjord as alliance. The quests are disconnected and discombobulated, and the zone is really hard to get around in to boot. I've run characters through both, but in my latest set of 70-80 grinds, I've been skipping the tundra entirely.

Personally, I really like Grizzly hills. The quest chains are "meh", but the music and the zone's look and feel are great.

Ready Check: Cooldown Management {WoW}

May 29th 2009 8:27AM Frost Death Knights also have a mini-execute, they get a 12% damage buff on most of their best moves (oblit, frost strike) from Merciless Combat when the target is below 35%.

@MichaelGray: you should put another caveat in with the "early and often" cooldown style. Get deadly bossmods and watch it. If you pop your neatokeen cooldown right before locust swarm on Anub'rekhan or right before Maexxena is due to mass-web everybody or whatever, you might be wasting it. Additionally, "early" doesn't necessarily mean "right away". Sometimes people go nutso with the DPS cooldowns and end up stealing aggro on certain sensitive fights (watch Noth's blink, etc).

Finally, while I like the word 'angst', I think you should find a few other replacements. It's in there like three times. You do, however, get bonus points for good use of the word 'unibrow'.
