How would you change Nikon's D3S? {Engadget}

Agreed, I was going to go with "I'd actually ship the camera."

Hacker reveals how Apple artificially restricts iPhone chargers (video) {Engadget}

Aug 4th 2010 9:57PM @KingOfSparta

It turns out they are actually following an extended USB spec for devices that do not actually negotiate with the hub for additional power. This story has been well circulated in the past few days; I recommend looking at Slashdot's comments from yesterday for a more detailed breakdown.

Basically the resistor setup allows the iPhone to follow the USB spec, charge from computers (up to 500 mA draw) and charge faster from the wall (up to 1 Amp) with different resistors.

I don't like most of what Apple is doing these days, but this is an elegant solution not something nefarious.

WSJ reports Microsoft diluted IE8's privacy features to appease advertisers inside and outside the company {Engadget}

Also, the other story on the front page about electrons in stressed graphene behaving like they were in magnetic fields in excess of 300 Tesla seems like an 'alt' story.

Kin listed as at least $240 million writeoff in Microsoft earnings report {Engadget}

Imagine what could have been, if the development $$$ for this travesty that ANYONE and EVERYONE knew would be DOA had instead gone toward the Courier.

Everyone that owns Microsoft stock should be demanding an answer to that question.

Flash 10.1 ported to iPad, burninates the countryside (video) {Engadget}

Jul 4th 2010 1:27PM @Jeff Kibuule

This. I'm fairly sure backdoor deals with the networks about Hulu and iTunes TV sales are the real reason Jobs doesn't want Flash anywhere near the device. Which is why I'm cheering the project on.

Plastic Logic delays QUE proReader 'a bit longer,' cancels pre-orders {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2010 12:00AM @MojoYugen

I, like you, am patiently awaiting a proper device with a larger format screen and native support for many formats the science, medicine, and business worlds use. When Plastic Logic announced this device, it was the clear choice.

Now we are almost a year after the initial reveal, beyond the revelations of CES and the various new display technologies demoed on the floor. If they had released this in the spring, I would have one by now. If they had met their release date a few days ago, I might still get one with reservations. But...

Now, I think spending any kind of premium on a black and white traditional e-ink display is throwing money away. And it isn't the much-vaunted Pixel Qi that makes me think so; Pixel Qi saves 50% to 75% power compared to a standard LCD screen when off, not a whole lot when the backlight is on. No, I'm talking about Mirasol - full color, fast enough refresh times to handle video and smooth interface elements, and it sucks less power than E-INK displays when it's in motion.

The first Mirasol device may not be open enough to support the formats I want, or have a large enough screen to view a full-page journal. But eventually one will be released. And that, that will be the device I buy. (I was desperately hoping the Courier would come to fruition with dual Mirasol screens).

Blood Pact: Tip-top trinkets {WoW}

Jun 1st 2010 2:49PM I feel obliged to point out that not all mages are Arcane. Fire has no less than three DoTs that are active almost constantly at high gear levels (Ignite, Pyro, and Living Bomb) and its single target damage is pulling even or beating Arcane's in a properly buffed group.

Rawr and Simcraft both show normal Phylactery scaling above all other trinkets currently available, even heroic DFO, for a fire mage. I haven't run the calculations for charred scale, but I expect fire BiS to contain this trinket until Cataclysm.

Call for submissions: Top tips for tanks {WoW}

May 23rd 2010 5:03PM Even better, don't. Heroic throw one caster, then tab or mouseover target the other caster and charge that one instead. Bam, entire group comes to you. Tclap, shockwave, and the aoe begins.

For bosses, sure heroic throw and charge. But for other pulls, pull smarter.

Spiritual Guidance: Getting the most out of your emblems {WoW}

May 7th 2010 3:48PM Two resources to end your problems (or start new ones, or suck up like days of your time):

shadowpriest dot com - not sure if URLs are allowed here
Google "Simulationcraft" - it's way, way better than Rawr, is created and maintained by spriests, and will give you real rankings on WoWhead or Lootrank. For comparing tier you will need to manually add in the pp values from shadowpriest dot com's 3.3 gear lists. This used to be a nasty unfriendly command-line tool, but it now has a decent GUI.

I'm guessing that the t9 set bonuses aren't worth going to from 251+ ilvl stuff unless you have at least the 245 versions; I'd just save up the Frost and go for 4pc t10. It's that good - not only are the shoulders/chest/helm perfectly itemized, the 4pc bonus alone is worth almost 800 dps in a fully buffed 25man. Also, just getting the rotation down and having very high DoT uptimes for VT and DP is worth about as much as gear upgrades until you're quite good at it (and target dummies don't help here, because your haste and thus all the DoT durations, MB and Flay cast times, etc. changes so much with totems & ret or boomkin around, nevermind heroism).

Spiritual Guidance: Getting the most out of your emblems {WoW}

May 7th 2010 3:27PM As one of the earliest commentors noted, if you're already getting Frost from raiding, if you're serious use every one you get toward tier until you have 4pc. Lucky VoA helps but isn't guaranteed - even so I'd recommend getting shoulders then chest/helm (if you have the ony25 helm but not Merlins or the Frost offset sp/crit/haste chest - get chest, if you have the reverse go for helm, if neither just pick one) and just make sure you're shadow 'mainspec' for the VoAs.

Disc and shadow coexist very nicely at the current time; I swap out trinkets, helm (don't like replacing a meta twice or the shadow helm would work fine for both), and really nothing else when I start popping bubbles all over. BiS gear shoots for the same stats, and a bit of hit in the Disc set doesn't matter if it's way more spellpower than you have another option for in that slot. The only issue is Shadow's propensity to gem sp/haste in every yellow socket - in many cases sp/crit or pure sp would be better for disc depending if you're a Divine Aegis tank heal build (former option) or a bubble spammer (the latter). However, you can perform extremely competently in both roles in a shadow-optimized set; I swap to disc on Marrogar hardmode 10 and usually do more healing/mitigation than our other heals. Holy's love for spirit pretty much requires two totally separate sets to do well coexisting with Shadow.
