Shifting Perspectives: Tanks and the barrier to entry {WoW}

Mar 4th 2010 8:31AM There is only one thing about tanking that is really really hard.... Coping with the incredible amount of BS you have to take from other players. Whether it is people acting like maniacs in a 5 man and then blaming the tank for the wipes or near wipes or all the "tank experts" who tells you your mixed T9 / T10 gear is not good enough to tank VoA. The amount of people you meet, who think they know what they talk about and clearly don't, is staggering. There are so many variants of this species that it feels daunting to even consider listing them. So ill list a few of the worst types:

1. The HP-fetishists: anything less than 35k unbuffed HP on a DK means the guy is a noob. The über-example from my personal experience is being kicked from a group before the start of a Heroic Halls of LIghtning run, because I had less than 30k unbuffed HP, I had at the time 4 T8 pieces and epic achievement...

It really makes my head hurt when people are so ignorant they cant figure out that we once had to do these instances in blue gear... But the real sad thing is ofc. that people want god mode in a game that is arguably already way to easy - too easy to be challenging even for Saturday morning casual players

2. The pseudo-elitist jerks (who for all means are real jerks). These guys are belivers and can to some degree be experts in something ill call the TOTOTS or the Theory Of The One True Spec. The aforementioned HP-fetishists can be seen as a subspecies to the PEJ.
These guys have somehow attained the idea that there is only one real way to do anything in the game, thus if your Paladin has not gemmed exaxctly the way they belive in: you're a NOOB!

There are ofc. some ground-rules established within the WOW game and comunnity – that most people in their right mind would always argue you should follow, like being crit immune before trying to tank in a raid. I will not go against this common sense, but to say there is only one way to tank, heal or dps in this game is just plain stupid / utter madness.

I cant even begin to explain how much i resent this general attitude to the game. If you have a fair understanding of your class and have not geared your DK tank for spirit or something completely wack like that and you actually have the appropriate gear level for a raid, and oh you actually tank the bosses like its nobody's business....then it IS NOBODY'S BUSINESS how you do it, how you gem and so on.

3. Gearscore (and anyone using it in an uncritical manner) - this is something tanks, healers and dps alike can be faced with – i really can't say anything about this, even thinking about the different modes of stupidity this system/addon promotes almost makes me cry.

It is not that Gearscore in and of itself is a bad or even redudant thing, its just that it somehow makes people stop thinking for themselves when GS becomes trendy on their it unfortunately has become on mine. Think about tank trinkets when you think about GS, then you'll see what I mean.

I guess my point with this long rant is: shut the hell up and treat your tank as your best friend, without him you wont get that epic whatever you're so desperate to loot.

Dec 25th 2009 8:12PM No sorry i dont...i allways think of the old norse god høder / hother...the blind god who was tricked by Loke into killing his brother baldur/balder by shooting an arrow made from mistletoe at him...Mistletoe being the only living thing not to have promised their mother never to hurt Balder.

Update: European weekly maintenance extended {WoW}

Jul 15th 2009 11:40AM Well 4 hours late for work you say? what about 7 hours...Ghostlands was supposed to be online from 11.00 now they say 18.00...

Instead of a free day I would like to get about 10 emblems of heroism for each of my 3 lvl80 toons... + perhaps a few blue and purple drops...this is realisticly what i would have gotten out of those 7 hours of missed play... Also I'd like to get a sunny day off from work payed by blizz since that is what i have wasted waiting for their no good asses...
