Breakfast Topic: Blurring the boundaries between patches and expansions {WoW}

Aug 5th 2009 9:28AM No, it won't happen. Expansions aren't really there for "us" who play constantly. The purpose of expansions is to get World of Warcraft back on store shelves, and to get people who have stopped playing, to play again.

Patches will never be able to do that, an expansion creates a massive media buzz, patches create a massive buzz on sites dedicated to wow, which people who don't play don't read.

In other words, patches are a pro-active method of keeping people playing and paying, while expansion are reactive attempts to pull back those who have left, and gain more new players.

Update: European weekly maintenance extended {WoW}

Jul 15th 2009 9:36AM Compared to earlier MMO's wow isn't terrible in regards to up-time, however they are terrible in regards to communication.

There has blatantly been a marketing decision to never mention actually informative news on the website (such as what's up, what's down, what went wrong and when it will be back), and instead rely on giving any hugely limited information via the forums.

I can only reason that its a pathetic attempt to cause prospective customers to believe they never have any down time, but frankly the forums would get spammed to death every time the maintenance went wrong if they just made it easier to know what was going on instead of each person having to make 5 page views searching for information that isn't there.
