Aug 19th 2009 9:35AM DirectTV PPV on the TV, WoW.com and other news sites on the PC, a few rl friends to geek it out with, and a lot of junkfood. :P That's my idea of convention going :D
Jul 31st 2009 4:35AM The issue of cultural differences is a complicated one, and I mean no offense to WoW.com commenters when I say it won't be resolved here :P.
As with most problems of this sort, the problem is line drawing. Where we stop and say "OK people, that's the way you do things, it's different than mine but have it your way." and where you go "Duuuuuuuuude I don't care if you've been doing this for 4000 years, you really should stop it."
My opinion is that we can't have blanket rules, but examine each issue in a case-by-case basis. The deciding factor: damages.
For example: In India it's customary for arranged marriages to occur, in many cases between children as yound as 12-13 years old. It is officially outlawed but it happens all the time anyway, and it's so much the social norm, that not even the kids themselves protest most of the time. The problem is that if they do, they are forced into marriage and sex. I don't care if it in their culture, I firmly believe this should stop. The right of free will must be enforced, if only to taste the irony of it :P
And here, we are talking about skulls and bones in a videogame. Sure, you can make the point that this case is just one example of a much larger problem, but really, crying bloody murder for every little thing can only serve to weaken your credibility when you raise real issues. As I said, damages. Will the fact that the Chinese people can see VanCleef's head as a bag hurt their potential to be the best they can be? I think not :P
Jul 31st 2009 3:30AM Where to draw a line....yeah that's a tough one... I guess logic is out of the question... so we'll have to create some sort of rule system. But you know, "rule" it isn't a very strong word, people won't buy it... I know, let's call it "Law". Short and Official, I think it'll work.
