Sep 11th 2009 12:15PM Like it or not... Blizzard has taken a great cost-wise approach to handling UI mods. By having unpaid developers create the tricky UI options for the community, they can save money by not investing nearly as much themselves. For every developer paid by blizzard to develop UI mods, think of the hundreds of 'at-home' 'smalltime' developers who are doing it for free, just to help out other players.
Its good to see them keeping their ears open to their developers, and I echo the idea that they should get to tinker with the new Cat UI prerelease so we can enjoy the new game, without being frustrated while exploring the new content :)
I can't imagine this game without mods hehe :) Kudos to Blizz, and especially the dev's who make them, for creating a part of this game that really sets it apart!
Sep 9th 2009 5:27PM Thanks Mike I appreciate the personal response to my post!
I guess when it comes to the dailies its a matter of opinion, probably heavily weighed by the specific dailies you are doing :) I am certainly glad to see that Blizzard has changed some of these dailies on a rotating basis, so each day it changes, at least for a few more days :)
Regarding the novels, that was certainly a lack of research on my behalf assuming that they were hers :) I appreciate you adding that they were by other authors, her credit is restored! :)
Sep 9th 2009 4:41PM Overall not a bad interview, but Mike, I did have a few things I was surprised by :)
At one point you referred to the 'good things Blizzard is doing', but failed entirely to mention the parental control options which have been added. These go miles beyond the 'rested xp' and 'daily quests' you mention, both of which actually struck me as negative actions Blizzard has taken, which could INCREASE addiction.
By rewarding someone who has quit to return (rested xp) and encouraging a player to repeat the _same actions_ every day, are both addiction building behaviors. The daily quests, are probably one of the worst things blizzard has actually done to encourage this problem, by rewarding and even requiring players to do daily repeatable actions builds an OCD-type pattern of behavior.
I am glad that the interviewee was straight forward in stating that parents must be held responsible for their child's behavior, as far too often I hear tv, video games, movies, comics, whatever children enjoy blamed for their actions, rather than parental neglect. This gave her a lot of credit.
Unfortunately, by trying to sell a couple books at the end, she did lose some too :(
At the end of the day more people need to recognize that any constantly repeated behavior can be addiction forming. This isn't limited to video games, booze, sex, whatever your demon, but is caused by a malfunction of the brain, and often made worse due to neglect by the individual, and those around them that fail to act on it.
Sep 9th 2009 4:05PM Regarding the underwater thing, blizzard has said they 'Dont want it to be annoying' to operate underwater. It will be interesting to see how they do this, whether its by giving us items with swim speed increases, or the ability to breathe underwater in certain areas, possibly delivered through 'airated water' or gills :P
It will be interesting to see, because currently for most classes, fighting underwater is annoying :)
Sep 9th 2009 1:15PM Ack! Yes I got home and faced this error for about an hour, and then afterwards when running ToC just before bed it kicked me out during the 2nd boss fight :(
Sep 9th 2009 12:09PM I use one of the free apps and it works great (warcraftstat). To be honest, anytime my server is down, it never shows as offline according to blizzard anyways, so its really just something to look at in the few minutes before it comes back up :)
Sep 4th 2009 7:28PM I sense an in-game horde election coming up :)
I'd totally vote for Pedro.
Sep 4th 2009 7:03PM The poll could use a few more options for the 'Are you waiting until the next expansion' question. How about a "I'm still thinking about it" option hehe :)
Personally, I am strongly considering one before the expansion, but have yet to actually go for it :)
Sep 4th 2009 12:38PM Ahh, I've always loved those caverns :) If only there was a pool of water so I could fish too!
