Breakfast Topic: Should Cataclysm bring back the world boss? {WoW}

Jan 15th 2010 9:53AM Yeah, I'd love to see this. I think there's no good way to make them part of the normal progression, and I worry about the issues with who gets to tag it first. So imagine a world boss that's a bit different -- more on the order of the Brewfest Dark Iron attacks:

You're chilling at the AH when a /yell comes out: "Citizens of Stormwind! The village of Goldshire is under attack by minions of Deathwing! Your king requires your assistance in its defense!" So you mount up and head to Goldshire, where a big 'ol black dragon is burning up the place.

Everyone can pitch in. It's the kind of fight that doesn't require a raid group or tight organization, but it does require a certain amount of participation; there's no guarantee that you'll take him down. Maybe it's a 50/50 chance. Characters die sometimes -- he attacks semi-randomly -- but you can zerg him too. The fight lasts for about 15 minutes. If everyone collectively does enough, you take him down and receive the gratitude of the king.

Everyone who was in combat with the big guy -- damaged him, or healed someone who did -- gets a reward. (Either loot the body or be rewarded by the king, who shows up to say thanks.) You get something similar to the [Satchel of Helpful Goods], with material tuned to your level. Plus, there's a chance for some nice drops. For example -- if you did this today, a level 80 toon would definitely get something like a few gems or a couple potions. But you also have a chance for more -- maybe 10% for a Runed Orb, and a very small chance for a BoE epic or a mount.

It's not quite the same thing as a traditional world boss, but you'd get the same kind of OMGWTF effect, along with some fun of contributing -- even for lower levels -- and a decent reward. And it doesn't lead to the 'who tagged it first' worries or the hassles of fitting it into normal raid progression.

Jan 4th 2010 11:00PM I think you mean "ultimate" -- I for one wouldn't put anything ahead of it. Pinnacle of jazz, for sure.

Dec 14th 2009 10:11AM Zuka: that's not true. You can trade BoP drops to players from other realms, as long as they were eligible for the drop in the first place. Of course, that doesn't help if the drop was already sharded.

I believe you cannot trade the Frozen Orbs, however.

Dec 14th 2009 10:08AM Yes - what Josin said. I was healing UP with a Paladin tank yesterday, and he could not hold aggro on anything. I checked with a Pally friend, and he mentioned Righteous Fury. Didn't look like the tank had it active. I wanted to whisper to him about it, because it was probably an accident, but that didn't work. So, to that Paladin (who was otherwise just fine): sorry for calling you out!

Breakfast Topic: Abuse of the "Report player AFK" feature {WoW}

Dec 1st 2009 8:16AM AFK is AFK. Someone who's not playing the way you want is not AFK, and if you report them, it's abuse. Simple.

Nov 18th 2009 2:34PM Blizzard reveals their secret plan to power Orange County with the energy harvested directly from nerdrage! We all win!

Seriously, there are some posts here that just go too far into complaining, QQ, and borderline trolling. You're getting voted down for that, not because you voice an unpopular opinion.

There are some very good (but negative) posts too. Unfortunately, some of them follow with "i know you're going to downvote me". IMHO, anyone who wants to complain about getting downvoted deserves it. Saying "You will hate me for my Truth!" doesn't help make your point.

Nov 18th 2009 1:48PM No, we don't like your humorous take because it's not funny. And it doesn't say anything new or interesting. And your spelling is horrible. But "not funny" was the deal-breaker.

Patch 3.3 PTR: Patch notes updated {WoW}

Nov 11th 2009 10:56AM Fewer and fewer changes each round. Seems like they're just working the tuning on the raid bosses right now, so it will be interesting to see how the PTR testing goes over the next few days. If that's relatively bug-free, 3.3 should be ready to go. The only question then is, how will they time it relative to Thanksgiving? My guess remains 1 December.

The Queue: Blood and glory {WoW}

Nov 10th 2009 3:33PM It was planned for Wintergrasp - and probably other BGs - but it got scrapped. Bliz just couldn't create a good feeling of plane flight, so they abandoned it. The x-y-z motion of normal flying mounts isn't really anything like what a plane feels like.

The tournament mounts are a small example of what you'd have to do: give the mounts momentum and a finite turning speed. Then you'd have to add in gravity effects. It's certainly doable, but my guess is they'll work on other things first. We won't see it before Cata, and I'd guess not even then.
